The academy can be found nestled at the foot of the Humber Bridge in Barton upon Humber, North Lincolnshire, within a Grade II listed building known as The Ropewalk. Hall’s Barton Ropery was an international name of excellence in the shipping and many other industries for 200 years. Hall’s Ropes made on the Barton site were used on all the major shipping lines and for the first ascent of Everest. The factory was closed in 1989 and lay dormant until April 2000 when one fifth of the building was restored and opened as an arts centre housing 2 galleries, artists workshops, picture framing business and a Heritage Display. The centre currently attracts in excess of 20,000 visitors per year and is run by The Waterside Artists Co-operative. In September 2005 the rest of the building was restored and is now home to 12 artist’s studios and 18 units being used for creative industries including digital, media, design and other related industries including a fantastic coffee shop and The Nigel Brown Cookery Academy. The Academy is easily accessible by car, roughly an hours’ drive from Lincoln, Leeds, York and Sheffield with plenty of free parking. You can also reach us by train or bus, our nearest bus/rail station is Barton and the academy is a short walk away.

My work explores identity and (un)belonging from the perspective of a working class, neuro-divergent woman with long term health conditions living in rural Warwickshire. The work is autobiographical, observational and reflective. My work digs deep into the multiple layers of identity and (un)belonging within systems and structures of hierarchy with society and the chain reaction of cause and effect, finding connections and searching for answers. My work is a personal, social and political commentary and reaction to what I see, hear and feel, directly and indirectly. My current work is focusing on the entanglement of how our health informs our inner and outer identity and the push and pull of (non) conformity. I work with a variety of media and have produced photographic, moving image, installation, spoken word, digital, oil, ink, and pastel painting and sculptural art works. I have an acquired brain injury which makes reading and writing problematic if I try and conform to the expected delivery and receival of the written word. There will, therefore, be errors within these pages. These errors are now a part of my identity, they do not detract from my message unless you allow them to.

Back in Control Consultancy was founded in November 2015. Domestic Abuse and Faith wasn't recognised within the DV sector at that time. The founding director recognised the gap in the sector being a Christian, then she decided that she wanted to do something about it. Veronica Simpson the founding director has lived experience of domestic abuse and understands the impact this has on children. BiCC started "The No Hidden Harm - No Taboo Subjects" within Faith Communities Campaign in 2017. The support received by other organisations was overwhelming and a positive start. We welcomed partners, Faith Forums for London, Faith in Society and My Church Events who helped us pioneer and support the cause. We are proud knowing that we were the trailblazers and catalyst for positive change both in the sector and our faith communities, enhancing domestic and sexual abuse awareness and providing specialised support. Our message is clear "HER STORY IS OUR STORY" There's No Excuse to Domestic Abuse - Faith Communities ARE NOT EXEMPT! We will continue our campaign until all Faith Leaders are trained in domestic abuse and the response is more than just satisfactory.

Wellbeing and recovery aren't just my job. It's my life. In my early years, I experienced multiple traumas that meant I dreaded leaving my room. Now, I am a business owner running a highly rated counselling and training service, I’ve been selected to join teams that designed and launched innovative services improving mental health and wellbeing locally, within the NHS and internationally and I have been invited as a guest speaker to present as an ambassador for change So how did this change transpire? Ironically, my transformation story began with a message of impossibility. As a teenager, the situations surrounding me at that time significantly impacted my wellbeing. At 16, I went to my GP to ask for help, and they told me that I would likely always suffer because of my experiences. Fortunately, someone challenged me to focus on possibility. This new perspective changed everything. I turned to research. My study began in my teens and continues to this day with my Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Fast forward, and with over twenty years of research combined with practical knowledge, I deliver a service based on what works.

It means, I hope, that I am often able to have a different focus and perspective on things, while at the same time being aware of other perspectives and views. I qualified as a school teacher and some time after gained my first Swimming Teaching Qualification. It was the early 1970s… and yes… I’m guessing you’re doing the sums! I have ‘clocked’ a lot of mileage over some 50 years!! I have worked in a number of professional as well as voluntary roles. The upside is that I have had time to consider and review opinions and judgements on a wide number of ideas, events and initiatives. I enjoyed a 21 year career as a Secondary School teacher, uniquely teaching in both Humanities and Science Departments. I have taught in London and overseas.

Our training programme has been designed by lock fitters from Titan Vehicle Locks Ltd themselves to provide full training to encompass the whole process to successfully complete the fitting of security locks to vehicles using the knowledge built up from years of completing lock and accessory fittings. Comprehensive Training Unlike other training available we do not limit the products to one manufacturer but instead provide training on a large range of products from a number of different manufacturers. The training programme will cover all aspects from choosing the correct lock type for the vehicle/owner requirements all the way to the actual fitting of security locks both in theory and in practice without having to use your own vehicle as the test subject. By designing the programme from start to finish using our experiences we can ensure you leave not just knowing how to fit security locks and accessories but how to overcome difficulties, what equipment is needed, removal and repair of existing lock as well as maintaining locks for ongoing use. This training is intense and you will be learning, practicing, fitting locks right from the start and throughout the four days. Feedback from our past trainees is that a lot is learnt and the four days are fully utilised.
