Since inception in 1975, Canvey Island Swimming Club (CISC) has been competing in the world of swimming and has pupils from all local areas. Swimmers are personally trained and developed in line with Swim England Swim Plans, then fed through to the Club’s Squad Teams. Once swimmers reach Squad level, Head Coach and Teachers work closely together with members to transform them into competitive swimmers. We are a competitive club whilst encouraging younger swimmers to attend for the fitness and fun side of swimming in a Swim Club environment. All swimmers are introduced into a sporting environment where fitness along with nutrition play a vital role. CISC competes in local, regional and national swimming leagues. We swim against other clubs in and around Essex and at County level. All our swimmers develop confidence and courage to compete in races either as an individual or in team events. So, come on Canvey! From August 2011 to August 2013 – CISC temporarily moved to Runnymede whilst Waterside underwent major development work. We had no Coach and no Squads at this point. The Club provided Swim School and Swim Development lessons. Late 2013 saw the return of a Coach and Squad groups slowly built. In 2018 the full committee resigned, leaving the club in disrepair, with no Swim School Teacher and no Head Coach. Some of the parents pulled together to become the new committee, their first action was to re-employ Paul as Head Coach and Alison as Head Teacher. They revised Membership/payment/insurance costs and Teamed together to make what the club is today, a family friendly swimming club.

Our holiday workshops range from the all time favourite, 'Blood Brothers', the hugely successful 'Matilda', the much loved 'Mamma Mia', the hilarious 'Shrek', the stunning 'Les Miserable', and the exciting recent addition to our selection, 'Come From Away'. The workshop tutors will teach the theatre lovers all they need to know about their chosen show, including tailor made script, songs and choreography. My presentations were entitled 'Implementing a small steps programme for working with children with selective mutism' and 'An overview of interventions for children with selective mutism'. In 2019, I co-delivered a workshop in Melbourne Australia, aimed at parents of children with Selective Mutism and school staff. I have also been a speaker at the SM Help Summit as well as the Early Year's summit. Other work In 2016, I worked on the Brave Buddies programme (an intensive therapeutic programme for children with selective mutism) delivered by the Child Mind Institute in New York City, USA. In 2017, I worked on the WeSpeak programme at Kurtz Psychology in New York, an intensive therapeutic programme for children aged 11-14 with selective mutism. International work I offer Online Sessions, having supported parents of children with selective mutism from the UK, USA, South Africa, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates and more. I have also delivered direct intensive therapy to children internationally, including in the UK, Bulgaria and in Thailand. In 2019, I co-founded and delivered the Selective Mutism Group Programme (SMGP) in London, UK and in 2020 I co-delivered the SMGP in Australia. In order to reach even more children and families, we now have a team of Confident Children practitioners who are passionate and experienced in Selective Mutism. In 2022, Confident Children was asked to become a SMIRA associate (an associate of the UK SM association). At Confident Children, our passion and goal is to help as many children with Selective Mutism as possible to find their voice.

Amala (formerly known as Sky School) was conceived in 2017, in response to the gap in quality education provision for displaced youth. Our name is inspired by the Arabic word for hope, which our education embodies. We believe that young refugees - as all people - have a right to quality education. Yet, fewer than one in three refugees are able to complete their secondary education and only 6% are able to access higher education. In 2016, Amala co-founders Mia and Polly were working on a prestigious scholarship; the programme admitted refugees to schools around the world to complete their upper secondary education. They found that for every scholarship place available, hundreds of promising applicants were turned away. Their subsequent research showed that there were few educational opportunities available for refugee youth aged 16-25, many of whom are forced to drop out of educational systems due to the barriers they face. The idea for Amala was born: to provide transformational learning programmes for displaced youth and their host communities to improve their lives today and open up opportunities for the future. Amala has two key programmes: The Amala High School Diploma, the first high school diploma designed for and with refugee youth, and Changemaker Courses in areas such as Peace-building, Ethical Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship. Amala’s curriculum has been developed with the support of our educational partner UWC South East Asia, one of the largest international schools in the world with an expertise in values-based curriculum development, and led by UWCSEA’s former Director of Teaching and Learning Stuart MacAlpine, in collaboration with refugee youth and 150 educators. Amala learning focuses on the development of learner agency as well as competencies that enable learners to make change in their lives and communities. Amala learning is delivered through a blended learning model and in light of Covid-19 many courses have been adapted to an online model. Amala programmes are delivered both directly by Amala and in collaboration with partners whose missions are aligned to our own. Through collaborating with partners we have been able to bring transformational education to refugees in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Latin America. All the titles are published in mainland China. Real Chinese is growing! From only six pupils at the very beginning for Mandarin only, we’ve grown to be two hundred strong. Every year some of our students take GCSE Chinese and each of them achieved A* grade. Real Chinese have developed from simple teaching to a broader field of education. The school has found a successful way of managing the Chinese language education as the core while valuing all-around education. Emily Harris, Teacher Emily (BA Hons) joined our team in 2017 and is packed with enthusiasm. Emily has been dancing from the tender age of 3 with experience in ballet and tap as well as the above mentioned styles and is keen to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with other dancers. Her degree in education and special needs is just another asset she brings to our academy, further enhancing our inclusivity policy. DBS checked annually and First Aid trained. Jordanne Wood, Teacher Jordanne has been dancing since she was 2 years old with experience in all theatre subjects including ballet, tap, theatre craft, modern jazz, acro gymnastics and cheerleading. She attended the Pattisons College of Performing Arts in Coventry. She soon went on to complete her IDTA professional qualifications and then went into teaching full time. She also has a young child of her own bringing her maternal instincts into class. Like many of our teachers, Jordanne is continuing to work through more IDTA dance qualifications whilst she is teaching with the aim of eventually becoming an IDTA examiner. Jordanne's current qualifications include associate with the IDTA in Freestyle, Ballet, Tap and Modern Jazz; BGU level 4 in Cheerleading. DBS checked and First Aid trained. Liam Pincher, Teacher Liam began his dance journey as a contemporary dancer, but slowly moved to street dance styles the more he learned about them.This took him to study an urban dance course in London, and even to study Urban Dance in America! Over the years, he has gained experience in a variety of street dance styles including hip hop, House, popping, locking, and breaking all whilst experiencing battle culture, performance opportunities and teaching. He's always very excited to have the opportunity to share everything he's learned with fellow dancers and has already made a positive impact on many of our students. DBS checked and First Aid trained. Emily Hunt, Teacher Emily started dancing at the age of three in Ballet, Tap and Jazz, gaining medals and performing in regular shows with her sister. Progressing through medals and competitions, Emily became a finalist in the 'British Amateur Junior Modern Sequence' at the age 14. Leaving the competition world behind she began studies for her Pre-Associate exam in 2010 where she won the 'Bill Tasker Award' before proceeding on to her Associate exams where she was nominated for the 'John Dilworth Award'. Emily has a 2:1 Ba Hons degree in 'Professional Dance Teaching' from Buckinghamshire New University as well as her IDTA professional awards. Her specialism is Classical Sequence but she is also an experienced Ballroom, Latin and Freestyle teacher. DBS checked and First Aid trained. Dance Coaches We are really lucky to have a group of amazing volunteers who assist with our classes. Aged only 12-18, these girls have a fabulous rapport with our other students and can be essential in making new members feel welcome and helping less experienced dancers with steps. They all undergo First Aid Training and have DBS checks at the appropriate age.

I am a mum & career, I have to two happy, healthy, very chalk and cheese, strong-minded boys who both have they're own challenges but I wouldn't change it for the world I am a salon owner - HD Beauty and Aesthetics I've been in the industry now for nearly 8 years working my way though the industry, paying for my first course and working to pay for my next and so on. I started with body waxing 8 years ago and I'm still learning and adding to my knowledge. I started in the back room of a local hairdressers & opened my own salon 5 years ago, recently moving to even bigger premises! I LOVE my job! I love making people feel good about themselves again, giving them confidence in their body. I am a business mentor - I have a passion for teaching and mentoring others coming into the beauty and aesthetics industry whether it's own salon goals or working within a salon, everyone needs support and guidance. It's a daunting and bitchy industry to be in and you should never feel like your alone. I support clients in various ways to smash their business and goals and help them achieve anything they want on a 1-1 bases! I am a beauty training academy owner - pulling my passion for teaching and lashing together to offer the opportunity to others to build their very own career in the beauty industry. Beauty has changed mine and my families life. It's given me the flexibility to work around my kids, watch them grow up and attend the important events while feeling like I have something for me and bring in my own money.
