When Bob Gormley, our Head Tutor, was working on a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Cornell University, he needed access to a medieval manuscript in the Cambridge University Library. Since Cornell wanted him to stay in New York to teach their undergraduates, Bob was ironically forced to go on leave from his Ph.D. in an attempt to finish the degree. An American rather than a British citizen at the time, Bob had to start a business to support himself so that he could live in the UK. So, in 2005, Bob built on previous test prep teaching experience he'd had in New York to start S.T. Logic, which quickly became the most popular tutoring company in London for American standardized test prep. As a result, Bob never finished the Ph.D. dissertation, even though he wrote about 800 pages of it...in Latin. In addition to the Master's degree he earned at Cornell, he does have two more Master's degrees (with distinction from Columbia University and London Business School) to go along with his quadruple major summa cum laude -- four majors with highest honors -- from his undergrad at Wheaton College, a small liberal arts college in the US. My own journey to become a mindfulness guide My own journey as a mindfulness guide started two years ago when a friend sent me a small picture with colourful circles and the unknown word “IKIGAI” in the middle. It made me think and for the first time fully understand how I would like my professional career to look like and to fit in my whole life. Then a question came: What should I do exactly to fulfil those ideal pictures? At this time I was part time Forest School practitioner in a London primary school, casual outdoor educator at WWT London Wetland centre, volunteer urban gardener and full time mum… My clear inner vision is that being a mindfulness guide is my IKIGAI – the combination of something I love, something the world needs, something that resonates well with my values, skills and personality and possibly something that I can be good in. Mindfulness has changed my own life for good and that is where my inspirations came to share it with others.

The aim of the Trust is to inspire, educate, and to promote enjoyment and wellbeing for all through gardens and the outdoor environment. Established in 2015 Beth Chatto Education Trust has developed a varied annual programme of courses, workshops, projects and activities for adults, children and community groups. The programme consists of firm favourites that are retained each year and new courses that keep the programme current and interesting. There is something to suit everyone whether you are an experienced horticulturalist or a novice keen to try your hand at something new. We offer RHS Theory qualifications, practical gardening courses, one-day creative workshops, lectures, school visits, Forest school and children’s holiday garden activities. These can run for a morning, a day, termly or up to two years for the RHS qualifications. The Beth Chatto Education Trust aims to facilitate people to access the outdoors, enjoy learning in our gardens and connect with the environment to enhance wellbeing.
