Welcome to the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN). Our aim is to carry out high quality research into the function of the nervous system in health and disease. We have a multidisciplinary workforce of close to 500 people, mostly based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, but also spread across the University. We are an integrated part of the broader neuroscience community across Oxford, with many links to other departments. Many of our scientists are also practising clinicians and provide general and specialist care through the Oxford University Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust. Through our DPhil programme, and our very strong group of early career researchers we play an important role in developing the careers of young scientists. NDCN builds on a long history of research in neurology, brain imaging, eye disorders, and anaesthetics in Oxford which has made major contributions to our understanding of how the brain works and to the development of treatments which have changed lives. Major discoveries made by NDCN scientists include the discovery of a type of cell in the eye which helps regulate our body clock, new techniques to image the human brain, devices to make anaesthesia safer, methods to prevent vascular diseases of the brain including stroke and forms of dementia, understanding and treating chronic pain, pioneering treatments such as gene therapy for inherited eye disorders, and the diagnosis and treatment of immunological disorders of the nervous system. Who are we? We are Revved Up. We provide paid work experience for young people from L8 and the surrounding areas to prevent them from being involved in serious organised crime. What do we do? Young, disadvantaged people who are at risk are given opportunities to recruit for and co-facilitate youth projects, events and community consultations. During their time with us, young people are given the opportunity to join our list of members, contribute to/learn the operations/ day-to-day running of our community business, they are all also given personal development programmes, 1:1 coaching and mentoring, social prescribing and business start-up advice. We have regular staff trips and excursions to come up with ideas and celebrate recent successes, these are all chosen by the young people. Our community business originates from another organisation called This Is My Story Limited (TIMS). Over 5 years ago TIMS was founded by Phillip Taylor (1957-2021) Adam Taylor, Sophie Middleman, Mike Hobbs and Deborah Fitzsimmons. The purpose of this organisation was to work with disadvantaged young people involved in crime, drug activity, addiction and those who had severe mental health problems. Adam and his family have spent most of their lives in Toxteth L8 Liverpool and it is one of the most disadvantaged areas in the country. The majority of the work that TIMS did was in Toxteth working with young people (all of whom were referred by word of mouth) that needed help in one of these areas. When TIMS was 2 years old, our founder (Adam Taylor) noticed that the young people he was working with through TIMS expressed a desire to follow in his footsteps and decided to try and make that happen, that is when he started Revved Up Limited.

The ASP model is a dynamic framework developed to promote and develop effective multi-agency partnership working across the South West region to bring human trafficking and modern slavery to an end. The model consists of localised partnerships and overarching regional board. The local partnerships represent agencies working within police force areas (Avon and Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire and Dorset). The regional board consists of the chairs of each of the local partnerships and representatives from agencies with a South West remit. The ASP Coordinator provides administrative support to the partnerships and provides a conduit for information to flow between the local and regional boards. The ASP has developed its strategy based around the government’s 4P Modern Slavery Strategy. The government’s strategy looks at how to Pursue prosecutions and methods to disrupt individuals and groups responsible for modern slavery, Prevent people from engaging in or facilitating modern slavery, Protect vulnerable people from exploitation and Prepare frontline professionals to identify and support victims. The ASP looks to support this strategy throughout the South West of England in a number of ways. These include raising awareness and providing training to organisations involved in the ASP as well as the facilitation of the sharing of information and intelligence between organisations to enable a joined up approach to disrupting and prosecuting perpetrators and to assisting victims. We aim to provide a platform to enable multi agency strategic thinking across the South West region in line with this strategy and each of the ASPs assess the work they are doing against this strategy quarterly. We are fully aware that slavery and trafficking respects no territorial boundaries and the model has been developed to ensure effective sharing of information, best practice and a comprehensive, cohesive and united response to slavery across the region.

The RYA Competent Crew course is aimed at beginners to the world of sailing, with little or no experience, who want to become active crew members rather than just passengers. After the course, you will be able to steer a yacht, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in the day-to-day routines of sailing a yacht as well as rope handling and general duties. Or if completing the Yachtmaster Offshore prep you will arrange with the school to book a RYA Examiner to take the 8/10 hour practical exam soon afterwards. The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. About us In 2013, following many years of working with local young people through martial arts, self-protection as well as life skills training, Richard Pomfrett created ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’. His vision was to help educate and protect as many young people as possible on the subjects of bullying and abduction prevention. It was by starting off working closely with a handful of local schools, that gave him the opportunity to develop and create such unique and effective programmes for both. Since 2013 Richard’s passion for his work as pushed him to continually evolve and shape ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’ to fit the needs of young people today. It is through these specialised and unique sessions, that we aim to educate as many young people as possible. Raising awareness and passing on vital skills and knowledge at key stages in their development and helping prevent them from becoming part of the future dire statistics. The Birth of The Stay Safe Initiative.cic In 2019 ‘Stay Safe! Workshops’ become ‘The Stay Safe Initiative’. To further benefit the community in which we work, we made the decision to take our work from the private sector into the public sector. By doing this, we aim to take the valuable work we do with young people, into building stronger relationships with everyone we work as well as giving us scope to grow and play a bigger role within the community. Growing with the times, The Stay Safe Initiative continues to works with young people on the original subjects of Bullying and Abduction Prevention (Stranger Awareness) but now also provides relevant Internet Safety advice as well as training up many young people within schools to be Stay Safe! Mentors (possibly to become future members of #teamstaysafe themselves one day). As times move forward we continue to evolve and stay relevant ensuring we are delivering the best, most up-to-date education on the subjects we now specialise in.
