Concern surrounding underachievement of young males was brought into sharp focus in 2007 by the independent REACH report. Sponsored by The Home Office, The Department for Communities and Local Government and The Department for Education and Families, the report explored the costs associated with the problems that can arise from a disadvantaged socio-economic background, in this case specifically for young black males. These costs are associated with over-representation in the Criminal Justice System and reduced gross earnings and taxes associated with educational underachievement. They are estimated at £808 million a year and could amount to £24 billion over the next 50 years if the underlying issues are not addressed. From a working-class background himself, Clive attributes his corporate career success to hard work and maintaining a positive attitude. A key finding of the REACH report was a lack of positive male role models, particularly black male role models, in the media and the lives of young men. Clive knows from experience that the socio-economic gap to success can be bridged – he has held a number of senior level HR positions, is a company director and was awarded an OBE in 2010 for his contributions to the REACH report and the workplace mediation industry. Thus his involvement in the REACH report, together with his own personal experience, has inspired the development of the Bridge Builders Mentoring Scheme.

Once it became apparent the complex restoration of Pioneer was possible, the decision was made to set up Pioneer Sailing Trust in 1999. The trust, whose founder trustees were Mary Falk, Charles Harker and Rupert Marks, is a registered charity. From day one practical help and funding has arrived in generous measure from many individuals, organisations and local businesses. Pioneer’s new purpose is to offer young people the challenge of sailing, which often proves to be a life changing experience. Pioneer has accommodation for three qualified crew and twelve trainees. As a powerful and strong sea going vessel, she is ideally suited for day sailing or passage work in the Thames estuary, across the North Sea or the English Channel. Being a crew member highlights and emphasises many vital qualities essential in life and the trust believes these practical and new experiences helps develop young people. The trust also opened Harker’s Yard in 2009 to further its work with training and education in the marine industry and provided opportunities for work experience and apprenticeships in marine engineering and boat building and repair. Pioneer Sailing Trust works closely with life development trusts, training agencies, councils, social services and other organisations devoted to improving the life prospects of young people, many of whom deal with difficult circumstances. Young people often find time at the trust opens new windows of opportunity.

Rochdale Connections Trust are the leading independent provider of Domestic Abuse services, family support services and targeted youth support interventions throughout the Borough of Rochdale. We were founded in 1997 by a group of local Youth Court Magistrates concerned by the number of young people coming before them who were disengaged from education with little or no family support. They soon realised that in order to impact effectively the offer of support needed to be extended to incorporate a whole family approach and employed key workers to offer supportive mentoring and bespoke interventions based on identified needs. Volunteer Mentors were recruited and utilised to provide sustained support to clients, most notably troubled adolescents and their families. 25 years after our inception the Charity is deeply embedded in the diverse local communities of Rochdale, Heywood, Middleton and The Pennines townships, particularly those with greatest need. We are trusted by residents, with a good word of mouth reputation. By knowing our community, understanding the complexity of the issues faced and evolving as an organisation to meet changing social, health and wellbeing needs.
