LITTLE MUSIC STARS is a collaboration with close friend Jeanne Friedman and was born after they realized that they could offer something different to the ‘old fashioned’ pre school music programs that are out there today. Katie wanted to inject new life into traditional children’s songs whilst also writing new songs that make the LITTLE MUSIC STARS program stand out as being modern, memorable and easy to learn. She has really enjoyed devising the new program along with the song writing process. The original songs for LITTLE MUSIC STARS incorporate many different music genres throughout the curriculum. Katie’s classes have a strong emphasis on the children’s imagination through song and dance as well as making it relaxed and fun! Katie enjoyed a very successful musical theatre career in London’s West End along with tours across Great Britain and internationally for 25 years. She appeared as Mavis and Vera on several occasions in ‘Stepping Out’ the comedy play, in London’s west end in 2017. She lived in Los Angeles in 2011 with her son Samuel for 3 years where she developed and taught the curriculum and even teaching Sandra Bulloch and her son on a few occasions! In 2014 she returned back to the UK and started the LMS program here and selling her first franchise in 2018. LMS now has over 200 children coming to classes each week, is present at 6 pre schools and has been part of many many kids parties over the years. Little Music Stars is set for world domination in the next few years...watch out everybody!!

After 34 years working as a graphic designer/illustrator and photographer, I made a career change in 2018 to concentrate on my love of art, crafts, making and printing. Natural forms/plants, landscapes and architecture are my favourite subjects to work with but nothing is out of the question if it inspires me. Gel plate monoprinting allows me to work with all of these in various combinations, printing onto gift tags, envelopes, glass, wood, fabric and large format paper. I also eco-print using leaves, flowers and natural plant/vegetable dyes, but am also a big fan of using commercial small batch dyes for quick results with fabrics. The ‘making’ aspect of my work allows me to produce small bespoke items. Brooches are a favourite, with each one being hand painted and therefore a one-off (even if the colour way is similar). My latest are formed from a birch plywood base, which I choose to source externally rather than make myself, and therefore help to support another business. I also enjoy teaching and really love seeing others learn something new and take home the items and skills they have acquired.....hopefully with the inspiration to do more! The photography side of my work still ticks over in the background with images and items that I sell on Redbubble. I have also remained a contributor to online photo libraries including Dreamstime and Adobe Stock. Commissioned work is something I take on now and again when time allows. Carrie has over 30 years’ experience in education - now Director of Curriculum for the Brooke Weston Trust and a visiting fellow for Ambition Institute delivering NPQ training, Carrie was at that time the Principal of Peckover Primary School in Wisbech; a school with 54% of pupils, originating from many parts of Europe, having English as an additional language. This was a challenge that she tackled with great enthusiasm and creativity! Our first step was to re-write the curriculum completely, ensuring children were exposed to high quality texts and a wide range of vocabulary. Our classroom environments immersed children in their learning and our mantra was ‘talk, talk and more talk’. We planned structured oral opportunities into all our lessons, using the excellent ‘Tower Hamlets, ‘progression in Language structures; we had continuous provision from Nursery through to year 2 centred on language rich environments and opportunities. However, we discovered that once our pupils had acquired enough English to let them read, write and converse fluently, the progress of some began to plateau. These could be pupils who weren’t speaking their first language much at home, or reading books in it. In some cases, pupils were starting to lose their first language altogether, making it harder to build and develop their English. We sent a set of BeeLingual UK dual-language books home with every EAL child, so they could read stories in their first language and in English with their parents We used our bilingual Teaching Assistants to lead daily first language discussion groups to develop a rich and challenging vocabulary We used colourful discussion mats to pre-teach pupils in first language and English, deploying them alongside stems based on Progression in Language Structures Our pastoral team used first language emotion cards to help pupils describe and explain their feelings We introduced a ‘no hands up’ policy to promote lively class discussion We taught the whole schools songs in first languages and English Using the resources we were developing at BeeLingual UK, we introduced a whole raft of strategies to cultivate a rich vocabulary in first language and subsequently in English.
