Welcome to our Outstanding Chinese Academic School It is our pleasure to welcome new and returning students to Hua Hsia in 2022. We hope you have all had a lovely summer! As always during these summer months, we take a step back to unwind and relax while awaiting the GCSE and Pre-U results of our students who have worked tirelessly to secure themselves top grades. The good news arrived earlier this week and we are delighted to announce this year’s cohort achieved outstanding GCSE and Pre-U results! Our GCSE group, made up of 10 students (7 in class and 3 private), achieved nine 9 grades (highest possible grade, akin to an A*) and one 8 grade. This keeps us in line with our 100% grade 8-9 track record and even gives us a 90% grade 9 achievement rate. Our Pre U group, made up of 3 students (all in class), achieved 2 Distinctions and 1 Merit. These brilliant outcomes are well deserved and are a testament to both the talent and dedication of pupils and staff, and to the quality of education maintained throughout the last two-and-a-half years even with all the speed bumps along the way. A very special thanks to Teachers Katja, Nicole, and Joseph for supporting students to unlock their full potential. The return of public exams has given the students the opportunity to clearly demonstrate the fruits of their continued hard work and focus during the challenges of the pandemic, especially in a period where nationally pupils were being warned of lower grades. Thankfully, things here have since rebounded as strongly as ever, with these pupils, and the School as a whole, able to look forward with optimism to what comes next. We look forward to seeing you all on the 10th and 11th of September, as we reopen our doors for another academic year.

My name is Francesca. The following bio may offer some more background on why I work the way I do. I grew up in Italy, but I spent half of my life outside my country of origin. This brought me face to face with the challenges of finding a sense of belonging and home elsewhere. This makes me particularly attuned to cross-cultural dynamics, multi-lingual living and the struggles of understanding who we are in this new reality. My early studies (a degree in International Relationships and Peace Studies) helped me understand human distress from the perspective of power dynamics and systemic oppression, hence why my framework of reference is systemic. A decade later, when I retrained as a counsellor, I combined my earlier studies and previous work experience in the third sector (ranging from supporting victims of human trafficking and refugees to the homeless) to find voluntary and subsequently paid work within a counselling service for people who use substances and are involved with the criminal justice system. Through my time at this counselling service, I understood trauma from a systemic point of view and learned to convey safety and support clients to find it in their life and within themselves. I am now a senior counsellor for a local charity for alcohol use. Since 2017, I’ve volunteered as a counsellor for the therapeutic community Time and Space, supporting people who hear voices, dissociate, and self-harm. My experience here has taught me how to look beyond the labels, centre the person in the work we do together and trust, no matter what, that the person knows best what works for them in their healing journey. Alongside this, over the years, I have nurtured a deep connection with nature, which kinship brought me a sense of connection, dignity and respect that I now extend to the other-than-human beings and world, too (hence why I have embraced a vegan lifestyle).

We are delighted to welcome our new Executive Director Paul Smyth, who comes to us with a wealth of experience and a strong reputation for ground breaking youth work. I am thrilled to have taken up the post of Executive Director with Politics in Action – and I want to start by congratulating my predecessor Patricia O’Lynn on her election to the Northern Ireland Assembly. We live in a turbulent time for politics around the world, nationally and locally – and this makes the work of supporting young people’s role as active citizens more challenging and even more important. We are emerging from a global pandemic which has put unprecedented restrictions on the lives and freedoms of young people, and which has impacted their learning, their social lives, their relationships and for some their mental health. Politics in Action responded proactively to these challenges by moving workshops online and ensuring continuity. I am optimisticwe can return to largely face-to-face delivery of our programmes with young people in schools and other settings, and can find new ways of engaging with more young people and in particular those who are not normally invited into conversations about politics and citizenship. Much of what we already do is in collaboration with schools and with other youth organisations. I see so much potential for additional collaborations that allow our little charity to punch above its weight. One of the many attractions of the role is the excellent Board of Trustees who provide strong governance, leadership and vision for Politics in Action. They bring significant social and political capital to the charity and use it in the interests of young people and our shared future. I would love to hear your ideas about how Politics in Action should direct our energies over the coming months and years. After years of experience in the professional maritime industry, we decided to not only cover expedition sailing skills in a Morse Alpha Expedition but also emphasize crisis management, leadership, professionalism, and camaraderie. These are the skills that will keep you and your crew safely working together even in a crisis situation. Our programs cover a broad curriculum of hard skills such as sail theory, weather, technology, voyage planning, first aid at sea, engines, traditional navigation, emergency drills (MOB, drogue, fire, etc), VHF protocol, RADAR, anchoring, and more. But it doesn’t stop there. We also discuss communication and leadership, bridge resource management (BRM), maritime law and conduct, etc. Our philosophy is that even when you aren’t sailing a commercial vessel, you are still bound by the same laws, weather challenges, crew dynamics, and physical forces. Therefore, recreational sailing shouldn’t be taken lightly. But on the flipside – we love to laugh, bake cookies on cold days, dip in the ocean, and have fun. Beloved, I assure you that through forgiveness or letting go of the past as some people may put it, you will find a sense of worth and purpose, a urge to refocus, clarity to achieve your dreams and be of service to whoever crosses your path. As much as the past enables us to shape our future, we should not let our past experiences keep dragging us back. You need to be sure that we feel like a good fit before you book a session, so let me tell you a little about me Early influences I was fortunate enough to grow up always surrounded by animals and nature, where no two days were ever the same and different challenges popped up constantly. Whether it was dealing with the weather or having to help birth an animal in the middle of the night, I learned to deal with the situation in front of me and respond accordingly. It helped me feel confident to think on my feet and give the situation whatever it needs, rather than stick to a prescribed reaction because that was what was ‘expected’. There is no sitting back and waiting for things to happen in farming life; you need to get on with things and make them happen and I love that I can bring that energy and those skills across into my coaching approach for you. My early start in farming and the love for animals and the environment that followed sparked a keen interest in understanding the relationship between ourselves and the planet and the interconnectedness of the cycles of life, whether that be farming cycles, the changing seasons, lifecycles of flora and fauna, of the human race and even on a spiritual level, an interest in the life cycle of the seven chakras. These core values underpin everything I do both in my personal and professional life, and have informed the ‘whole-person’ coaching approach that I have developed. All change After a career working in the corporate world for almost a decade, something shifted and I wanted more. I wanted to do something which was more aligned with my own personal values, reconnecting with the influences of my early life on the farm. So over the following years I retrained in beauty therapy, personal training, sports therapy and sports massage and headed in a completely different direction.
