Inaura School is an independent, co-educational special school for pupils who have complex educational, social, emotional and mental health needs. The school has 3 education learning bases located in the county of Somerset. We provide student educational day placements for Somerset and the surrounding local authorities including: Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, Devon, North Somerset and Wiltshire. Our Key Stage 2-3 learning base is located in Wedmore. Our Centre for Outreach and Outdoor Learning is located near Godney, Wells while our two Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 learning bases are located in Burrowbridge and near Godney, Wells. All of our students have Education Health and Care Plans and are placed with us through their local authority SEND departments. We work with students who have encountered challenges in mainstream, pupil referral units and other special school settings. Many of our students have experienced failure in multiple educational settings. That is why we do things a little differently. Our approach encompasses a relational and non-coercive philosophy for teaching and learning. This philosophy focuses on building trust and systematically removing the barriers that pupils have previously encountered in their learning journeys.

This site has been called ‘the wilderness’ for a thousand years. It dates back to Saxon times when the Forest of Dean, the ancient woodland between the River Severn and the River Wye, was designated royal hunting forest. Looking from the vantage point of The Wilderness Centre down to the River Severn, you can clearly see the broad curves of the river heading out to the Bristol Channel. Over the course of a day you’ll see the tide ebb and flow - the second highest tidal range in the world - and be able to pick out the villages along the River’s bank that were once thriving Roman ports trading throughout the Mediterranean. The current house is Georgian, built in the early nineteenth century as a family home. In the early twentieth century the site became a children’s hospital, specialising in infectious diseases. In the 1960’s Gloucestershire County Council acquired The Wilderness Centre, turning it into an outdoors education and nature studies centre serving the county’s schools. Dan and Sophie Sturdy bought The Wilderness in 2015 as a key location in their vision for human potential and growth.

After an 8-year career in marketing, I decided that I didn’t really want to do that any more. So, I did a part-time MSc in Nutrition, Physical Activity & Public Health at the University of Bristol, qualified as a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor, then quit my job and started my own business (a very succinct summary making it sound way more straight forward than it was). I have the enormous privilege of living on a beautiful farm in South Oxfordshire with my husband, Andy and our “little ones”, Geoffrey (dog) and Rupert (cat). Living on the farm, I have all the space anyone could need to keep active. I never really loved the gym environment and always found the regimented, rep counting, calorie tracking, muscle building approach to exercise very unnecessary. I feel best when I’m outdoors, being active in anyway that I fancy. I love strength training, but I quickly figured out that you don’t need machines in a gym to be able to do this. You just need to lift heavy things… and there are plenty of heavy things lying around the farm.

Having been a Driving Instructor for a few years now, I can honestly say I start work every day looking forward to going to work knowing my job gives me 100% job satisfaction. Having been trained by LDC (Learner Driving Centre), using their ever-popular LD System, I have been trained in the latest adult coaching and training techniques so you can be assured the training I give you will be of the highest standard. Another reason why I chose to train with LDC is because their ethos was the same as mine and that because every student is different means I allow for flexibility in their learning, coaching rather than instructing to allow the you to learn safely at a pace that suits your needs. It is my aim to make lessons both enjoyable and well as productive. Lessons are always conducted in a calm, friendly manner. I firmly believe in making pupils feel relaxed and at ease during lessons. Hopefully be creating the right environment my passion for coaching driving will transfer to you being passionate about learning to drive. I am now an Independent Driving Instructor but still follow the same coaching and training techniques I was taught by LDC but have adapted my own style of calm, patient, adaptable teaching to suit each individual pupil, giving them a tailored learning journey suitable for them. I have always lived in and around the Bristol area, and previous driving jobs has given me a vast knowledge of the Bristol roads. This will help me to choose the best roads to maximize your learning. I enjoy driving, teaching and I am passionate about Road Safety. So being a Driving Instructor is an ideal career for me. I have 3 sons whom, although I adore, has provided me with the best training possible for keeping calm in any situation. West of England Falconry (WoEF) was established in 2009 inspired by Director Jay Marshall’s lifelong interest in ornithology. WoEF is a registered charity dedicated to the well-being, education and conservation of birds of prey. “It was an experience similar to the ones we now offer the public which prompted me to learn more about falconry. After working with experienced falconers I started to develop a private collection and aviaries of my own. West of England Falconry started in 2009 and has subsequently been granted charitable status in 2013” says Jay. Experiences have always been well reviewed and continued to grow in popularity. WoEF received their first TripAdvisor certificate of excellence in 2015 and have done every year since and is now in the 'Hall of Fame'. In 2015 Naomi Johns met Jay and started working with him as a volunteer. Today Naomi now runs the centre alongside a brilliant team of staff and volunteers. WoEF’s work aims to benefit both wild and captive birds of prey through training and (very importantly) rescue and rehabilitation. Education, information and promoting and sustaining the art of falconry are also a high priority. Due to redevelopment proposals forcing relocation at short notice in early 2017, WoEF moved to Newton St Loe, where the local Duchy of Cornwall office supported us by providing larger premises. WoEF took full advantage of this opportunity and opened The Owlery in October 2017 with 15 more resident birds. WoEF received a Gold award for the Learning Experience of the year in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards in November 2017, and then went on to accept the Silver award for the whole of the South West. In April 2019, DEFRA granted WoEF a Zoo License, becoming Baths first Zoo, commending a high standard of animal care and commitment to charitable conservation and education activities. In November of 2019 West of England Falconry received a further four Bristol, Bath and Somerset tourism awards for the Small Visitor Attraction of the year, International Tourism, the Learning Experience of the year and for Accessibility and Inclusivity.
