We run the Young Archaeologists’ Clubs for young people aged 8-16 and the annual Festival of Archaeology to encourage everyone to discover the places and spaces around them.

ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY COURSES We are currently preparing our next set of courses, and below are the details of those that we ran in Spring 2022, which covered life, death, work and leisure in Victorian England, Scientific Archaeology, Maritime Archaeology, and Sussex Industrial History. We also ran a LIVE event at the Rottingdean Whiteway Centre, with Jane Russell, a two day course on Drawing Archaeological Artefacts.

As lead body for Aim 4 of Scotland’s Archaeology Strategy, we are passionate about encouraging greater engagement with Scotland’s archaeological heritage. Archaeology can play an important role in formal learning, helping deliver the Curriculum for Excellence across all areas. We offer support, advice and training opportunities for teachers, youth group leaders and home educators, and provide engaging learning materials through our Heritage Resources Portal and loan kit service.

In 1904, the Liverpool Institute of Archaeology was founded by John Garstang, affiliated with the University of Liverpool. Largely funded by private benefactors, the Institute contained both a library and a museum, intended to support the work of the staff and the teaching of its students. These are core roles that the Garstang Museum of Archaeology continues fulfil today.

The research we conduct as part of the planning and development process takes place alongside our own research framework. avon local history & archaeology

ALHA (Avon Local History & Archaeology) is an umbrella group, aiming to encourage and coordinate activities of the various local history, archaeological and heritage groups that lie within the Avon area. Our area is the former County of Avon, now the council areas of Bath & North-East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire in the West of England. There are some eighty societies in ALHA, with a collective membership of about 10,000. Some are region-wide but with special interests like the Bristol & Avon Family History Society; while many are parish- or district-based. They are listed on our Groups page. We also have links with local institutions, such as Record Offices, Libraries, Museums and Universities. We are managed by an elected Executive Committee meeting once a quarter, and operate through a small number of voluntary officers. Membership of ALHA is open to both groups or other institutions, and to individuals. Group members receive a free copy of the Speakers List and all members receive a copy of the Newsletter. Archaeology offers numerous possibilities for developing key concepts and skills, such as an understanding of chronological ordering, an understanding and appreciation of cultural, ethnic and religious diversity, the application and underlying principles of scientific methods and critical reflection on the interpretation of the past. Classics is an interdisciplinary subject which includes the study of the literature, languages, history and material culture of the ancient world, and their impact on later periods and cultures. Both subjects complement many areas of the curriculum. Our knowledge of the past is based on texts and objects, and is constantly changing as different interpretations are offered. Study of archaeology and classical subjects encourages pupils to think critically about the value of different sources of information, to form arguments based on different types of evidence, and to combine theories and methods from different subjects as they encounter new cultures and civilisations. Through our workshops, subject talks and teaching resources, we can help you to bring archaeology and classics to life in the classroom!
