FACING HARDSHIP, HAVING TROUBLES, OR NEED INSPIRATION? WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE. The Beating the Odds Foundation was founded in 1990 by Rocco Scalzi, a former Altoona Pennsylvania police officer who managed to re-focus his life after a tragic incident in 1980 during his rookie year. After choosing to turn his life around despite facing many obstacles, Rocco took his message of hope to kids all across the country. He recognized how all children are at-risk to become victims of poor choices and other self-destructive behaviors. And although certain at-risk factors are easy to identify in some youth, it is impossible to predict how everyone will react when faced with hardships. So Rocco’s message to the youth of America focused on the importance of developing a never-give-up attitude. To officially kick off his inspirational organization, Rocco brought 15,000 students to Three Rivers Stadium, then-home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, to hear first-hand how other people had reached their dreams and goals despite the obstacles they faced. The first two individuals who joined Rocco that day were former Pittsburgh Steeler great and Vietnam War hero Rocky Bleier (who now serves as Co-Chairman of the Beating the Odds Foundation) and Vietnam War hero Bob Wieland. Both have remained important members of the Beating the Odds Foundation and still inspire students and adults to never give up.

The 100th BOOBS Approved venue is a new cafe-bar in Swinton, Salford. Hadfields cafe became BOOBS Approved after opening just weeks ago.Be Open on Breastfeeding Salford (B.O.O.B.S) and our sister project BOOBS in Bury are open community groups set up to empower women to be open about their breastfeeding experiences and inspire others to breastfeed for longer. We believe every mum should have the chance to have a happy, safe and comfortable breastfeeding journey. BOOBS is part of our parent social enterprise Visit from the Stork CIC and was first set up in 2014 by CEO Kimberly Bond. The project is led by Rachel Parkinson (Project Manager), Kerry Purle (Administrator and Peer support lead) and our team of amazing volunteers. Meet our team here. We support mums by; Offering online and face-to-face breastfeeding support across Salford and Bury, Running monthly social and educational Breastfeeding cafe events at our BOOBS Approved venues in Salford and Bury Holding antenatal ‘A BOOBS introduction to Breastfeeding’ sessions for mums-to-be, currently in Prestwich but open to all mums. Pram walks and small meetups in Radcliffe, Bury Campaigning for mums to be supported in the community through our BOOBS Approved campaign. Offering a membership scheme with exclusive discounts at our BOOBS venues to support families and local businesses.

Industry and education lack the processes needed to engage at the individual level we would aspire to. Outreach activities create awareness of STEM careers, but it's not "enough". In order to develop aspirations and accelerate skills, additional levels of engagement are needed. Activities feel as if they happen to students rather than with students and for students. Students are a ‘person'... not just 'stats and numbers'. We believe we are not resonating closely enough with students. It's about more than this year's recruitment or next year's jobs. Its about a long-term, strategic sustainable pipeline of inspired individuals who will inspire the next generation.

We work in STEM - the Science and Technology areas anyway. These industries are some of the fastest-paced industries in the world and it’s an honour and a privilege to play our small part in helping progress the education of individuals in the subjects. Our training courses are built with the future in mind whilst ensuring that all our delegates are given a solid grounding in the basics. We have included businesses in the course development, and they are taught by our own industry experts. In Science we have made use of Labster to give delegates a virtual laboratory to “work” in and explore. Our technology courses service a global audience, we are an official Preferred Plus Partner for RDK which gives us access to some of the largest technology organisations in the world. We utilise this fabulous knowledge base to ensure everything we get involved in is truly pioneering. Our mission is very simple; to educate, upskill and/or reskill every delegate that attends one of our courses.
