I am honored to serve as Interim Superintendent for the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS); the finest Career and Technical Education program in Connecticut. For over 100 years, this school system has prepared high school students and adult learners with the skills to be successful in high-demand technical careers, while equipping Connecticut business and industry with a talented workforce to support economic growth. I am proud to be a part of that story. For 30 years I have worked in a variety of education roles. Most recently, I served as Superintendent of Bristol Public Schools where I was directly involved in the development and implementation of the district’s career partnership with business and industry in the city of Bristol, as well as a successful school-to-work career pathways program. Through this experience I observed how opportunities in the skilled-trades can transform the lives of students by setting them up for a living-wage career. I am excited to learn more about the opportunities CTECS offers. I believe that educational leaders are in the business of serving people first. Student growth, achievement and outcomes do not happen without a solid school foundation built on trust, seamless and open dialogue, and the willingness to engage in critical conversations. As such, over the coming months I’ll be spending my days in classrooms with students, meeting with CTECS staff, and getting to know our business and industry partners so that I can continue to support the growth of this school system. Michelle, A.I.S.T.D. , M.B.T.D.A. , Reg RAD Member, began teaching Adult Jazz Dancing in Portishead in 1989. In 1995 the children of the adults wanted a class of their own. Numbers grew rapidly. Michelle also taught for the Bristol School of Dancing (where she trained) from 1986 until February 2014 when the branch was handed over to Michelle. In the Summer of 2014, a super sparkly 25th Anniversary show was staged to celebrate. In June 2016 Michelle was contacted by the BBC to be filmed dancing for the TV programme Street Auction – A fabulous day. MBDS likes to stay in the heart of the community. The children enjoy performing in various events ie carnival, flashmobs,displays etc. MBDS has been involved in the BBC CIN Tapathon for the last 4 years. The school also has 100% exam pass rate. This year the school renamed itself from Jazz on Tap Dance Company to Michelle Bedford Dance Studios. We are a fully ‘inclusive’ school and warmly welcome pupils regardless! Since April 2012, possessing our own workshop, Scarlet's Fairy Folk create unique one-off, original one-of-a-kind, jewelled fairies in different styles, handcrafted with superb materials. Our handcrafted, jewelled fairies are made to order and can be posted worldwide. We also offer beginners fairy making workshops, silver jewellery & basic silversmith workshops for adults or children aged 11+ on a one to one basis or groups up to 15 people. (All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult on any of our courses). Our goal is to provide a fun experience whilst learning a new skill. No previous experience is necessary and all tools and materials will be provided. We have Full Public Liability Insurance with Hencilla Canworth Limited and a Full DBS Check Certificate. At our workshops you will be able to create stunning, unique gifts for friends & family and learn a new skill in a non-rushed & relaxing rural environment. We are based near Fleet in Hampshire, close to Junction 4a of the M3, or alternatively at any venue of your choice. Pick ups from Fleet or Blackwater train stations by arrangement. I studied Art & Design at Falmouth Art School and then took a degree in Graphic Design & Illustration at Southampton Solent University. I now work as a product developer for a large, international jewellery manufacturer. Most of the work is commercial and not particularly creative. So as a creative outlet I enjoy many craft hobbies such as crochet, knitting and sewing and occasional a bit of illustration. It all started a long time ago… I moved to Germany when I was two and was put into the local kindergarten. I couldn’t speak a word of German, however the teacher, Frau Pfenning began my integration by teaching me to knit – purely by demonstration. When I came back to the UK aged nine, my mother taught me basic crochet and I became adept at making dolls’ clothes using only single crochet – discovering I could shape garments using increases and decreases. She also influenced my knitting style – I am a “pit knitter”, as was her grandmother. As an adult, I didn’t rediscover crochet and knitting until my early thirties – 10 years on and my hobbies have become my passion.
