Practical help for practical people Tools for Self Reliance was started in 1979 by a handful of dedicated volunteers. Disillusioned by their experiences of development projects in Africa and the failure of overseas development assistance at that time to trickle down to the grassroots, our founders took it upon themselves to work with small-scale community based groups and at the same time lobby major institutional donors and governments to adopt a more people-centered approach to development assistance.

We started off specialising in one to one tuition and now also teach one to two lessons and small groups. we teach people of all ages and from all walks of life, from babies to adults, some learn for fun and others through necessity.

Our work ranges from small pieces to large projects. Tuition of Tiffany stained glass technique is provided in The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Regional Colleges and community groups. A lot of our work involves repairs to old and damaged leaded stained glass window and door panels. For an example of a new leaded window in a property being restored click here.
