Arriving in England in 1999, our Mestre-Luis Negão founded the group with the name Capoeira Pedra do Sal, in honour of his home borough in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. At first, Luis Negão was teaching classes with no real vision for the group, but seeing the potential of his students, decided to return to Brazil for a period to take courses with reputable masters of the art, in order to feel qualified to pass on his knowledge and skills. He spent some time training with Mestre Salário Mínimo of Grupo Abolição, who gave his Professor graduation, and so he took the name Abolição back to England to establish Abolição Oxford Capoeira. During his work with capoeira, the focus of the group became more ingrained in the teachings and methodology of Capoeira Regional, over the years he has continued studying and searching for information to further his knowledge and understanding of Capoeira, passing this knowledge on to his students, and giving them opportunities to learn from Mestres and teachers via trips to Brazil, and exchanges and workshops in England. Gaining recognition for his work, the founder of Abolição Oxford Capoeira has become known as Mestre Luis Negão, and is a well respected master of Capoeira in England, Brazil and beyond. Students of the group have gone on to be graduated as Formados and Professores, continuing this work in London and Oxford, for many years Mestre Luis Negão ran a project in Abaete, Itapuã in Salvador to help children on the streets where his journey in capoeira began, The Abolição Trust was set up to fund this project, and another project was set up in South Africa by two students from England (Professores Xaruto and Mosqueteiro), now some students from this project are teaching classes of their own across South Africa. Mestre Luis Negão continues teaching classes in Taunton, England.

I brushed aside the sleepless nights and smiled despite regularly feeling overwhelmed. I believed that being permanently stressed and busy was a sign that I’d earned my stars. Stopped in my Tracks Even when the cracks started to show, I kept going. I couldn’t see any other option. It took a major blow to my health to completely take me out of action. I had no choice but to stop. My life as I knew it had come to an end. There’s no doubt that serious ill-health impacted every area of my life. However, rather than being a tragedy, it was a turning point. I had time to think and I finally accepted that I wasn’t healthy or genuinely happy. My lifestyle and my mindset needed to change. I decided to channel my energy into new pursuits, particularly those which would benefit my mental and physical health. I committed to fully embracing training in NLP Coaching, Rapid Transformational Therapy and Nordic Walking. Gaining accreditation and putting my skills into practice has helped me to change and gain confidence, whilst helping others to get more from their lives. Fi grew up in London and throughout her childhood was always either making things, drawing or painting. She did her foundation course in London and then chose to leave the city and take her degree in Fine art Painting in the beautiful city of Bath. After spending a couple of years, based in a studio group in Bristol, making her own work, she decided to move back to London and shortly thereafter she did a PGCE and began her teaching career. After having her son, and due to work commitments, Fi and her family moved to Worcester and this is where she began honing her skills as a jeweller. She is now a jewellery designer and painter, offering unique, handmade jewellery pieces which are mostly made in silver, incorporating semi precious stones and accents of gold. Jewellery commissions are regularly undertaken and include recycling of old jewellery pieces to make new. Her jewellery is inspired by the style of ancient and archaeological pieces and natural forms and aspire to having a very handmade, and 'just dug up' look. Most of the work has been hand forged but more recently Fi has employed the lost wax casting process and now also runs workshops. Vibrant colour plays a large part in both her painting, prints and jewellery. Having trained in Fine Art, she uses the studio to paint in and undertakes portrait commissions. Having a portrait painted of a loved one can be an excellent way to mark a special birthday or occasion. As with possible jewellery commissions she would be more than happy to discuss requirements and options. There are a selection of workshops which can be booked in her studio, based on jewellery making and painting. Workshops can be a fantastic way to learn a new skill or done as a group can be a wonderful experience.
