In Japanese, Ippo Ippo is written as 一歩一歩。 一 is the Japanese character for 'one'. 歩 is the character for 'step'. This makes 一歩一歩 literally 'one step one step'. In other words: 'step by step' or 'one step at a time'! The choice of name came about partly simply because of the nice, bouncy ring that 'Ippo Ippo' has to it. However, more important is the meaning. At Ippo Ippo, learning Japanese is less about sprinting to memorise every vocab item, grammar point or kanji, and more about the process of putting one step forward at a time, finding ways to have fun and explore through the language. Our Past Work Skills Learning was founded in 2005 by Dayo Adeagbo. From 2000-2005 Dayo was the Head of Education at Feltham Young Offenders, responsible for providing education for children aged 11-17 and 18-21. In 2006 Work Skills Learning started providing academic and vocational courses for children and young adults. Another major development was our partnership with Hackney Learning Trust and The Urswick School, which continues to the present day, where we teach adult classes on Saturday mornings. Work Skills Learning has delivered a wide range of courses, to communities across Hackney. One of the most significant developments has been our work to train teaching assistants. Born in Manchester, Hannah was educated at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls before reading Biological Sciences at New College, Oxford University. She holds a first class Master’s degree from King’s College London and PGCE teaching qualification which is rated ‘Outstanding’. In addition to teaching, Hannah has worked as a Researcher for Oxford University and Reform think tank. She is Director of the Home Schooling Association and continues to teach Science at Key Stage 4 and 5. She speaks regularly at education events and provides written commentary for national media including the BBC, The Times, Telegraph and The Guardian. HEAD OF OPERATIONS LYDIA TITLEY Lydia is originally from Manchester and completed her secondary education at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. Following this, her interest in French language and culture led her to the University of Bath, where she completed a BSc in International Business Management and French. Lydia took the opportunity to spend a year in Paris where she attended the prestigious business school of ESCP Paris, studying a bilingual Master’s in Management, and worked as a European Account Manager at an international Marketing and Publishing firm. The Project Who are we? The story so far The group started informally in 2017 and later joined together as a formed group of five families and committed to progressing quickly in 2018. We have been supported by the Brighton & Hove Community Land Trust and have been successful in securing funding to work with Bioregional on their One Planet Affordable Living (OPAL) process to develop our project. We are continuing to apply for further funding, look for sites to build on, develop our membership policy and financial plan. What is our plan? We have developed a three year plan which involves securing significant funding, finding a site to build on and partnering with an eco developer. How will we finance & ownership work? We are in partnership with an experienced eco developer to support the development of an investment model which can incorporate home owning mortgages, rental and social housing. How will the community work? Homes will be separate units, there will some shared land/garden and play area and a common house; which will have a shared kitchen and dining area and possibly guest rooms, meeting/office space and laundry facilities. We are aiming for a simple community model – with the minimum amount of rules and process that allow us to live as harmoniously as possible. With everyone understanding that, if we all actively contribute to the community – the better it will be for all of us.

I graduated from the University of Southampton with a BA in Philosophy and Politics and a Master’s degree in International Relations and Development Studies. During my post-graduate degree, I was employed by the Politics Department as an undergraduate group tutor. After this, I worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Bournemouth until I made the decision to leave academia and work in the charity sector. I spent years working in the charity sector until I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that limited my mobility for almost a decade. During this time, I realised I needed to think creatively about work and that’s when my entrepreneurial side sparked and I decided to start my own business, working from home. I completed multiple courses in teaching English as a second language (ESL) as well as a Cambridge English course on how to coach people for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. From 2016 to 2022 I successfully tutored in ESL, IELTS and GCSE English language and later public speaking skills for teens (from 2019). During this time, I also joined Toastmasters International and that’s when my speaking career took off. Winning multiple awards at Toastmaster speech contests at local, regional and even national levels, I learned an incredible lesson; that the skill of public speaking isn’t something you’re born with, it’s a skill you learn, a skill everyone can learn. I experienced first-hand that becoming a confident speaker isn’t like any other skill in life. It’s a skill that transforms your life on many levels. When the fear of public speaking is no longer a feature in your life you feel freer without it hanging over you. Being confident in front of a crowd also means you feel more confident in other areas of your life and this naturally gives you a sense of wellbeing. Going through this amazing transformation myself, I soon developed a passion for helping others be the confident speakers they want to be. Now I run my own business in presentation skills for both online and offline platforms and have a range of programmes. I have a 7-week course for business owners who want to speak with confidence on camera for videos that attract their ideal clients. I truly believe that being able to engage, persuade and simply amaze your audience is one of the single most powerful skills you can have in life and in business.
