OIBC was launched in 1992 in order to improve health and the quality of life across the globe by promoting access to learning and research. Its maxim at that time was cooperation: cooperation between developed and developing countries; cooperation between academic and industrial institutions; cooperation between scientists, medical doctors and the public. Since then, other organisations have stepped in to promote one of our original aspirations, namely better cooperation between universities and industrial institutions. But the other aspirations remain, and over the last decade we have focussed particularly on youngsters in so far as better communication between scientists, medical doctors and the public is concerned. So now, our current strategy may be summarised as follows. VISION OIBC’s vision is of a world in which wider access to scientific learning brings better health and quality of life. PURPOSE OIBC’s purpose is to realise our vision through educational projects for all generations and especially for the young through building greater understanding of scientific and biomedical issues, MISSION OIBC’s mission is to bring together leading biomedical experts with all schools and lay adults, via live and recorded seminars, lectures and debates, to promote better communication skills and awareness and to create opportunities for all to appreciate science and biomedical issues. VALUES OIBC values its independence, its non-political, charitable status and its expert scientific leadership. We value the acquisition of knowledge by all, and we value the enhancement of education and awareness, best practice and management of life skills, which contribute significantly to public health and well-being. Our Islamic Scholarship program is highly flexible, allowing students to study modules at their own pace. We have an advisory timeframe of 3 years for completion. Examinations are held on a bi-annual basis for the modules already completed. We have a strong ethics in which we believe that the basic / foundation knowledge in each field should read everyone and therefore Shaykh Atabek has decided there will be no cost for these level 1 FREE - Basic / Foundation knowledge for modules. Our governing body comprises elected representatives from the local authority, staff, parents and members of the community and the combined experience, skills and knowledge is vast. The job description for governors is clear, set the strategic direction of the school, hold school leaders to account for improvement and ensuring that the school budget is spent appropriately. As such, much of our time is spent working with Mrs Johnson and the senior leadership team to continually review and refine the quality of our provision through our subcommittee meetings. That journey brought two marriages and divorces, multiple redundancies, a Masters degree at the age of 40, and the opportunity to live and work in 3 European Countries. The highs and lows of the road I’ve travelled have taken me from the darkest places of struggle and challenge to a life of fulfilment and big dreams I am still going to manifest. I am hungry to understand how what makes us do what we do in living this gift we have of LIFE. I have learned over these years, that life happens for you and not to you. SALT South West is a Plymouth-based Christian voluntary organisation ( known as SAIFLINE until 2006), offering direct help to adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. SALT is a member agency of The Survivors’ Trust and our Co-ordinator is a member of TAG (Trauma and Abuse Group). We are accountable to our Management Committee of five and have a Council of Reference which includes an MP, a Bishop, another Minister of Religion and a media presenter. We are currently a team of ten members, two of whom are counselling students and three of whom are currently paid part-time (Team Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator and Administrator). Our volunteer listeners have all undertaken the in-house SALT training, some have various counselling qualifications including specific sexual abuse/trauma related subjects. Some members of our team are survivors and bring with them personal experience and knowledge. Supervision is fundamental to our work and each listener receives a minimum of one and a half hours every four weeks. We are a close team and there is always the opportunity to share and offload inbetween when necessary. (Which is often the case in our field of work). Our Annual Away Day gives us a chance to meet outside of work to share, explore and be refreshed as people, not just as co-workers. Behind the scenes, our 60 prayer partners have the important role of supporting us and we meet together once a year. SALT works with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, age 16 and above. Everyone is received by us regardless of background, belief or behaviour. Our services are free of charge but donations are always welcomed. We do not want anyone to be excluded from receiving good quality psychological help.
