Founded in 2003, amplify provides services primarily to the voluntary sector with a focus on children and youth issues both in the UK and in the Global South. Tom has an extensive history of personal, professional and voluntary work with children and young people and the wider voluntary sector. From a child involved in youth work and global child rights advocacy, he developed skills and experience as a practitioner and advocate. He can bring this mix of experiences into work as a trainer, writer and consultant. Most recently, Tom was Deputy Chief Executive at Y Care International, the international development agency of the YMCA movement. He led their International Citizen Service youth volunteering programme, safeguarding & security, global youth work, policy & advocacy and financial management. Working part-time this was balanced with a range of freelance projects. Previously, Tom grew up in the youth and child rights movement. As a young activist, he was a member of the steering group of the Child Rights Caucus at the UN Special Session on Children and director of social enterprise ‘Young People Change the World’. He was engaged in local youth participation initiatives creating platforms for young people to be heard or to access services, including in sexual health and children in care. Tom was Chair of Trustees of youth-focussed international development charity Peace Child International. He was previously Senior Policy and Change Officer at the Children’s Rights Alliance for England, where he specialised in children’s participation rights, undertaking policy analysis, Parliamentary lobbying and campaigning for change. The Berkshire Outdoor Education Trust was founded in 1977/78. The original purpose of the Trust was to locate and operate an Outdoor Education Centre for the use of Berkshire school children. The Trust was started with the active encouragement and support of Berkshire County Council and its then Director of Education, Peter Edwards and the late John Wood Griffiths an officer in the Berkshire Education department. The Trustees raised and borrowed the money to buy an existing centre from Glamorgan County Council in the small settlement of Rhos y Gwaliau in the Snowdonia National Park, close to the market town of Bala. In the early years Berkshire County Council paid the teachers’ salaries and gave an annual grant towards the other teaching equipment that was needed, mainly protective clothing. The Trustees managed the centre, hired and paid the domestic and maintenance staff and settled all other expenses including food and heating costs out of the fees charged to attendees. With teachers’ salaries paid by the LEA the additional amount needed to be charged to pupils was quite modest. Over time, however, the level of subsidy given by the County Council was reduced and when in 1998 the 6 Unitary Councils replaced the County Council the subsidy was phased out completely. In consequence fees had to rise considerably. It was at this point that the Trustees decided to sell the centre to the present owner, who had been a teacher at the centre for some time previously. The trust then invested the proceeds of sale and now use the income to assist the most financially disadvantaged young people in the County enjoy the benefits and experience of time spent in outdoor educational activity.

ABOUT US The St. Neots English Centre is a language school that specialises in UK School Integration and Study Holiday Courses for groups of young learners aged 11 to 17 from across the world. The school is situated in the historic Cambridgeshire Market Town of St. Neots, located close to the famous University City of Cambridge. Our Study Holiday courses last between 1 and 4 weeks and can be tailored to meet your requirements. Students are hosted by local families, receive lessons from TEFL qualified English Teachers on site at our own English Centre premises or in a host school. Students take part in afternoon activities such as ten pin bowling, the local trampoline park and they also have the opportunity to take part in varied social and cultural events including visits to London, Oxford, Cambridge and Peterborough. Our School Integration programme involves students spending time in one of 25+ local secondary schools that we currently partner with. Students are ‘buddied’ with an English student of a similar age and accompany them to lessons. They stay with local families in order to experience the English culture first hand and have the opportunity of weekend visits to cities such as London, Cambridge, Oxford and Stratford Upon Avon. Our school is situated in the historic town of St. Neots in Cambridgeshire and overlooks the Market Square on the main High Street. Located within easy reach of London (45 minute train ride) and the vibrant cities of Cambridge and Peterborough (30 mins coach/train trip). St. Neots offers a variety of shops and a traditional market once a week in the bustling town centre.
