Keeping Yourself in Mind: An ACT-informed programme for people supporting a family member with JHD We are pleased to invite you to our virtual course for parents and family carers of people living with Juvenile Huntington’s disease. The course will be run by Sarah Gunn, a clinical psychologist and researcher at the University of Leicester, and will be based on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a therapeutic approach which focuses on learning to manage difficult thoughts and feelings, and to live a life which feels valuable and meaningful despite the struggles we encounter. This is an opportunity to explore the difficulties that can be associated with caring for a person with JHD (for you and within the family), to identify the values that matter most to you, and for you to think about how to move towards a more rich and valued life than you may have now. This is an eight-week course running from Wednesday 7 February to Wednesday 27 March 2024. The sessions will be on a Wednesday afternoon 1-2.30pm. As a freelance 'cello teacher I have many years of teaching experience from teaching in both the state and private sector. I have also work for Music Services, involving individual and group tuition, at junior and senior levels.  I try and use many of the pedagogical ideas of the ‘Kodaly System’, especially when teaching beginners, with its emphasis on singing,  musical games, rhythm and with the introduction of music-reading, fluency in the musical alphabet. Other areas of my work in education have always included close involvement in the production of lecture-recitals and demonstration workshops, mostly with the Astaria String Quartet, the Foundation for Music in Hospitals or in the past, Live Music Now! I have presented workshops and lecture-recitals for Arts Alive, Birmingham University, the City of Edinburgh Music School and the Education Department at Symphony Hall Birmingham, often to National Curriculum and National Lottery specifications. During the summer months, I have been a regular tutor on the 'Fantasia Music School' music course for many years. I have also researched authentic performance-practice and contemporary (classical) music, through both commissions and subsequent performances. This has led to intensive collaboration with eminent composers as well as time spent coaching student composers, giving me valuable insight into the creative process of compositions and the interpretive and technical difficulties for the performer. My own personal interest and inspiration has always been teaching, performing and coaching chamber music, specifically the genre of string quartets. As an experienced chamber musician, I have performed and coached the main works for string quartet, the chamber music for 'cello with flute, clarinet and piano as well as the solo repertoire for violoncello. I am also familiar with the orchestral repertoire, opera and theatre music, through extensive work as a freelance player. Please request my CV for my professional referees.

Professor of Clinical Traumatology, Sir Keith Porter is involved in the treatment of some of University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust’s (UHB) most complex injury cases. He trained at St Thomas’ Hospital in London in the 1970s before being jointly appointed at the Birmingham Accident Hospital and Selly Oak Hospital in April 1986. He was awarded a professorship by UHB, the University of Birmingham and the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in 2005 and was knighted for his role in developing trauma treatment for injured British soldiers in 2010. I am proud of the achievements from the robust civilian-military partnership between the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, during the last decade. There have been significant advances in pre hospital care with critical care interventions and blood delivered by the MERT team and the introduction of haemostatic resuscitation and damage control principles in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, such that patients have progressively survived more severe injuries in the last decade particularly as the IED have become more sophisticated and destructive. Birmingham has responded and moved forward the boundaries of continued resuscitation, wound surgery and surgical reconstruction using concepts and techniques that are not in war textbooks and have required bespoke and innovative solutions. Landmark advances have included debridement strategies, proactively managing the continuing inflammatory response, defining and understanding complex microbiological challenges including fungal infections and devising bespoke surgical solutions particularly for soft tissue loss. Integral to improving functional outcome has been our close working with Headley Court. Clinicians have worked closely with DSDL, defence research and the NIHRSRMC to come up with solutions to the research questions these complex patient generate. With several hundred unexpected survivors from recent campaigns, QEHB is proud of the part it has played in the chain of care and is working with the RCDM and defence medical services to capture the lessons learnt in what will be a live and evolving document.
