Shi-han Sensei Louis Casamassa, a 10th degree black belt is Grand Master of Red Dragon Karate and founder of the American Karate Kung Fu Federation (A.K.K.F.). He originated the American Form style. During the 60’s he traveled extensively throughout the Orient studying many different styles of martial arts. In keeping with yankee ingenuity and American tradition he took the best 7 major martial arts forms and combined them into one new powerful and effective style which is known as the Red Dragon style of martial arts. Red Dragon is a true “American Original.” Founded in 1965 by former U.S. Marine Corp military police officer and 10th degree black belt, Louis D. Casamassa. During the 1950’s, he traveled throughout the land studying with a wide variety of masters in many different styles of martial arts. He spent decades gaining knowledge, and wisdom along with a wealth of business information to enhance his ever expanding martial arts skill. In keeping with Yankee ingenuity and American tradition he used the 7 best major martial art styles and combined them into one new, very powerful and effective style which is now known as the Red Dragon style of Martial Arts. Our brand and our system of martial arts was founded upon Grand Master Casamassa’s love of the Arts. We have flourished for over half a century because of his ingenuity. Shihan Sensei Casamassa is considered by many to be the “Michelangelo of Martial Arts” by taking and combining his knowledge, talent, ingenuity and wisdom, he created an entire system of self defense that is unrivaled and one that has stood the test of time and has provided generations of Americans with a great way of experiencing the Martial arts. The Red Dragon Karate program is unique because of our original approach at mixing the best martial arts styles. Aikido is a modern defensive Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, referred to by many as O’Sensei (Great Teacher). Its emphasis is placed on spherical movement to create dynamic and explosive techniques that render an attacker harmless. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury. Move like a beam of light; fly like lightning, Strike like thunder, whirl in circles around a stable center. - Morihei Ueshiba Morihei Ueshiba MORIHEI UESHIBA, AIKIDO FOUNDER, 1883-1969 What is Aikido Aikido is often translated as "the way of unifying (with) life energy" or as "the way through spirit and harmony". It operates on the principle or tactic of blending with an attacker's movements for the purpose of controlling their actions with minimal effort. The Aikido practitioner does not rely on muscle strength but concentrates the power of the whole body onto the weak point of an opponent, forcing him/her to cooperate using his/her own force and momentum. This attribute defines Aikido's effectiveness and beauty as a martial art. Several approaches to Aikido have evolved over the years. Today Aikido is found all over the world in a number of styles, with broad ranges of interpretation and emphasis. However, the core essential principles of the martial art remain consistent. WHY PRACTISE AIKIDO? Aikido is more than simply an efficient method of self-defense. In practice, there are various facets of Aikido - the power of focus and concentration of energy; the concept of blending and unified non-resistance; the awareness of self and others. Traditionally, Aikido is a form of Budo – a “martial way”. Unlike other arts, Aikido technique can be applied at varying levels of severity, from the most gentle controlling techniques to the most severe countermeasures. One question that people who practise Aikido are often asked is why they do it. Although many people think of Aikido as a martial art only for self-defence, it has a range of physical and mental benefits as well: Physical benefits of Aikido - Regular Aikido practice can, over time, improve: Balance Posture Flexibility Co-ordination Reaction speed General fitness Mental benefits of Aikido - Aikido also offers unique mental benefits through practice. Private support of the Air Force Academy provides so much more than a margin of excellence, a higher education phrase used to describe the role of private philanthropy. Your impact is, in fact, immeasurable. Our focus on “More than a Margin” is a celebration of the generous individuals who make our mission possible. It more adequately describes the true impact of private support. We believe strongly, as many do, that our Academy is a vital national resource — one that is deserving of our emotional and financial support. The Academy's mission is simply too important to leave to the vagaries of federal funding alone. As a result, the Air Force Academy Foundation (formerly the USAFA Endowment) will work actively to identify and to cultivate key relationships with current and potential Academy donors to support the superintendent's strategic priorities. We also believe that a foundation, singularly charged with the abiding stewardship of donated funds and constituted in such a way as to ensure the permanency and efficacy of the gift, is the most effective structure for providing this support to the Academy. As a result, the founders of the Air Force Academy Foundation chose to establish a new type of foundation and to memorialize a number of unique Founding Principles into the organizational bylaws. Founding Principles Our board of directors is stable and independent. The structure of the Air Force Academy Foundation is such that donors can have confidence that their gifts will be stewarded carefully and consistently over time by other donors. We are committed to a positive and supportive approach. The singular role of the Air Force Academy Foundation is to provide financial support for vital Academy programs. We will not make any public pronouncements on the policy decisions of the Academy or the Air Force. We are fully transparent. Our operations have complete audit and donor visibility annually. Annual reports are provided to each donor — both for the Air Force Academy Foundation as a whole, and for each donor's individual gift. Our Commitment to Donors We hold donor service first and foremost. We commit to integrity and transparency in all our dealings. We will recognize our donors' contributions while respecting donor-requested privacy. We seek perfection in every written communication and report we produce. We under-promise, over-prepare, and over-deliver. We get the job done regardless of who gets the credit. We welcome constructive criticism. We seek continuous improvement in every aspect of our operation. Cooperation and respect characterize our interactions with each other and the outside world. Quality preempts quantity. Execution supersedes intention.

Claire Cotterill Mosaics

Birmingham

I’m an artist based in Birmingham with a great love for all things creative. From a young age, creating has been therapeutic for me, giving an outlet and response to the changing world around me. In my late teens I took a traditional route studying Fine Art, going on to use my skills to support communities and people of all ages. This included working with play schemes and youth groups, bringing as many creative experiences as I could – despite incredibly low budgets! Over the years I developed a passion for mosaic and began to specialise in creating large scale mosaic installations, initially within educational and community environments. What I love about mosaic is its accessibility for all, and the collaboration and teamwork it brings. As a process I enjoy watching people’s confidence grow, the relationships built along the way and the pride shared in the finished product of a permanent installation on a wall or in the ground that the whole community can enjoy & share. I love that my work becomes part of a shared history for those that have worked on it, been part of the commissioning process and have inspired it. I consider myself a visual storyteller and enjoy helping others to share their stories in a unique and engaging way. I love exploring new places, meeting new people and creating bespoke and site-specific artworks. I relish the challenge of meeting a client’s brief, whatever that may be and have vast experience working with a wide range of clients over the years, working creatively in many differing environments. Throughout my career I have explored other media and methods within my commissions, moving from a purely handmade traditional approach, to incorporating digital media and new technologies. This fresh approach has expanded my vision of what can be achieved in my public artworks allowing me to widen my practice and include other mediums. It has also equipped me with new skills that I enjoy sharing through public participation and my ability to offer a wider scope of media in my response to the needs of commissioners. I’m excited to further this innovative approach and as a member of the Crafts Council and STEAMhouse Birmingham, I look forward to continuing to explore my digital and technological skills in the future. Each commission excites me and is a new adventure and I pride myself in delivering high quality permanent artworks, delivered on time and within budget. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss any projects you may have in mind!

Back Room Art

I have had an interest in Art for most of my adult life and having never studied it at school I was nervous of taking up any classes so late in life. However, by chance whilst trying to find local art classes I happened to stumble upon Back Room Art and I sent an enquiring email. From the very first communication Heather put me immediately at ease and gave me the confidence to go to my first class. I joined a wonderful group of people. Heather works well to ensure we are all included in the lessons, working at our own pace and with projects and materials we feel comfortable to use. Heather’s inspiration, openness and motivation have given me a confidence in doing something I never felt capable of doing. Our works are encouraged and praised and Heather’s communication with everyone is brilliant to ensure we all get something out of it. She listens carefully to our aspirations and helps us to achieve them with advice, suggestions and with realistic goals. The facilities we work in are relaxed, friendly and well stocked with all the artistic materials you could wish for, giving me a chance to use resources I would not generally have tried out at home on my own. Coming to this class has given me so much more than just the opportunity to create art; it has opened my eyes to art I would not normally have looked for, expanding my horizons and opportunities. It is the one thing on a Monday that I do look forward to." Teresa "I had no idea where to start after enjoying Art at school but never holding a paintbrush again until I started working with Heather. Her work is vibrant and it is clear she demonstrates her passion for all types of art in her teaching. I didn't want to be told what to do in an adult Art class, but I know much more about perspective and abstract technique than I ever did." Sarah "I so look forward to my Tuesday evenings- a time to just let go and enjoy creating - perfect to de stress amongst great company with a lovely laid back vibe and fab cuppa tea! " Abigail "Drawing stick people was my trademark, but drawing with Back Room Art I started to draw real looking faces....Never thought I could do this." Sean "I liked painting the flowers, and had a laugh at my finished piece. Heather just says have a go once she teaches us some techniques and she says if we go wrong, it's not working, it's artistic license. The beauty of painting is that you can always paint over it."

Jikiden Reiki UK

Reiki Ryoho (therapy) is the art of hands on healing originating in Japan in 1922, established by Mikao Usui (臼井甕男1865-1926). Reiki itself can be described as the universal energy of existence, which flows through all life and matter. It is completely natural and non-invasive, and when a Reiki therapy is received from a trained practitioner, it can assist in the healing of both body and mind. Treatments are carried out by the practitioner placing their hands directly on the recipient, who remains fully dressed throughout the session, normally laying on a treatment couch. By doing this hands on, the practitioner effectively acts as a conduit for Reiki energy to pass through him or her in greater abundance, assisting and boosting the natural healing ability of the recipient’s body. Reiki works not only on physical issues but can also improve mental health and outlook, and over the past few decades has become increasingly popular throughout the world especially in Europe and the USA, becoming recognized as an effective and important holistic health treatment. Trials and studies are now being held in hospitals and front-line medical staff. In Japan however, despite being the home of Reiki, the situation has been strikingly different. Although Reiki in Japan has, in recent years, been slowly growing in popularity, the majority of Japanese people still do not know or accept this wonderful non-religious healing practice. Before WWII Reiki had become very popular in Japan and was widely practiced, but from 1945, partly because of connections to the Japanese Navy and also because of medical laws instituted by the occupying forces, the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (the organisation established by Usui sensei) was obliged to stop openly practicing Reiki in order to avoid being shut down. Despite this however some individuals quietly continued to use Reiki from their homes, for friends and family. With the dramatic change of ideology in post-war Japan, people gradually lost interest and belief in traditional Eastern healing arts and it is only over the last thirty years, following its journey from pre-war Japan, first to Hawaii and then throughout the West, that Reiki has been reintroduced to Japan and is now once again being openly practiced. This Reiki practice however was a Western version of Reiki with varying degrees of change and influence in the way it is practiced, and many of the teachings are therefore either missing important, essential elements from the original system or have been changed completely. It was thought that Reiki had died out in Japan and from the time Western Reiki first reappeared all those years ago, many students had been trying to find the original teachings free from Western influence, and this lead to the door of Chiyoko Yamaguchi…

The Ladywood Community School of Music is surviving on a shoestring, the grace of Birmingham City Council and the enduring good will and dedication of our two remaining tutors, Paul and Curtis. We currently run classes in Guitar and Saxophone between 6 and 7 pm on Thursdays at the Community Centre in St Vincent Street. Xhosa Cole Our mission is “to bring affordable, quality musical tuition to the heart of Ladywood. We cater for children and adults of all ages and abilities”. In the past we have offered classes in Piano, Drums, Violin and Trumpet and showcased our students and tutors in events at the Community Centre, Birmingham Artsfest, the Botanical Gardens and elsewhere. As a project we are a place where people often come to pick up an instrument for the first time and, as such, we don’t attract the attention that more high powered projects do. However, students who started with us have gone on to play in their own bands, The Notebenders and even MYJO. Most recently Xhosa Cole, who first picked up a saxophone at our Music School a decade or more ago, won the prestigious BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year. We make a difference! If you think you can help or would like to try, please get in touch by phoning Richard on 07905 559 167 or emailing ladywoodmusic@gmail.com The video is of an Artsfest event we put on back in 2008, and feature Students, Teachers and people who just came along on the day and picked up an instrument. As a school we’d like to get back to where we were then. There's plenty more about us in the old website which I’ve archived, though you may find it doesn’t all work as much of the old HTML 3 & 4 code is deprecated

Hadith Of The Day

Solihull

The story of Hadith of the Day (HOTD) began in 2009 with the simplest of visions: How to make Muslims connect and fall in love with their faith using the latest technology available which they use on a daily basis. The aim was to showcase and promote the beauty of Islam to a truly universal audienceFor people to be inspired by sacred text and by real life experiences of people whose lives were changed forever due to the sheer inspiration our beautiful faith offers. We wanted to make inspiration the footprint for our vision, and so the HOTD journey started, like many other success stories with humble beginnings. We started with one person, a piece of blank paper and a simple idea of the time was 1st July 2009. INSPIRING MILLIONS Our mission statement is to inspire. We inspire our members with daily drops of inspirational and educational knowledge. We have been endorsed by some of the world’s leading scholars such as Mufti Ismail Menk, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan, Shaykh Yusuf Badat, Shaykj Omar Sulemain, Yasmin Mogahed and many more. When we first started we had 100 members on our Facebook Page. Within 6 months we had 500,000 and in less than a year we had 1 million members. We’re now at over 15 million and growing Alhamdulillah. CONNECTING OUR GLOBAL UMMAH The strength of social media is that it connects millions of Muslims from different parts of the world together. With the generosity of one of our members, HOTD sent 10 members on an all expenses paid trip to Makkah and Madinah. Only low-income families were permitted to enter and when we made the phone calls to the winners, every single person broke down in tears. Some of the people who won could not afford applying for a passport so our donor also covered those costs.
