Forest Schools are nature-based communities where trained practitioners nurture learner-led exploration and discovery, nurturing meaningful experiences for positive lifelong impacts. Wellbeing is the foundation of our practice and through recognising the social, emotional and physical needs of participants we provide the guidance and facilitation for our time in nature. Through creating learner inspired experiences based on exploration and discovery, we recognise opportunities to mentor holistic growth over the course of long-term programmes. In developing the community, we nurture a culture based on collaboration and of embracing challenge so that we can allow, over time, for the blossoming of character, resilience and empathy, and for a greater sense of connection, with nature and for our shared future. What are the Benefits of Forest Schools? Improves Confidence Improves Resilience Improves Physical Wellbeing Improves Empathy Gives an Insight into the Natural World Learner-led Learning Improves Physical Wellbeing & Motor Development Long-term Observation & Guidance from Leaders A Typical Day in a Forest School Meeting outside the woodland, excitement is in the air. The birds are chirping, the gentle wind rolls across the hills while wellington boots search for puddles. The woodland has been checked and the equipment is ready to be taken with us, our focus in on the wellbeing, physical and emotional, of each person within our community. Gathering together, we check in on how each person is feeling and what they wish to explore during their time in nature. We introduce new ideas and invite them to engage our help when they wish to. The woodland space is a blank canvas, full of textures and materials to enrich the senses and stimulate the learning journeys that we will all undertake. As leaders we have both an idea for the direction of the day should learners need us to provide this for them, but also understand the importance of encouraging them to decide their own direction. During this time of exploration and discovery, our role as a leader is to provide the nurturing they need whilst also encouraging them to stay with challenge and to make sense of the experiences they have. Through review and reflection their voices are heard, and their emotions are recognised.

Sarina Mann, Breakthrough Public Speaking

sarina mann, breakthrough public speaking

I graduated from the University of Southampton with a BA in Philosophy and Politics and a Master’s degree in International Relations and Development Studies. During my post-graduate degree, I was employed by the Politics Department as an undergraduate group tutor. After this, I worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Bournemouth until I made the decision to leave academia and work in the charity sector. I spent years working in the charity sector until I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that limited my mobility for almost a decade. During this time, I realised I needed to think creatively about work and that’s when my entrepreneurial side sparked and I decided to start my own business, working from home. I completed multiple courses in teaching English as a second language (ESL) as well as a Cambridge English course on how to coach people for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. From 2016 to 2022 I successfully tutored in ESL, IELTS and GCSE English language and later public speaking skills for teens (from 2019). During this time, I also joined Toastmasters International and that’s when my speaking career took off. Winning multiple awards at Toastmaster speech contests at local, regional and even national levels, I learned an incredible lesson; that the skill of public speaking isn’t something you’re born with, it’s a skill you learn, a skill everyone can learn. I experienced first-hand that becoming a confident speaker isn’t like any other skill in life. It’s a skill that transforms your life on many levels. When the fear of public speaking is no longer a feature in your life you feel freer without it hanging over you. Being confident in front of a crowd also means you feel more confident in other areas of your life and this naturally gives you a sense of wellbeing. Going through this amazing transformation myself, I soon developed a passion for helping others be the confident speakers they want to be. Now I run my own business in presentation skills for both online and offline platforms and have a range of programmes. I have a 7-week course for business owners who want to speak with confidence on camera for videos that attract their ideal clients. I also run three online group coaching speakers’ clubs for those who want more long-term, regular support: For university students and young adults who want to develop their presentation and interview skills. For non-native English speakers who want to develop their presentation skills and confidence in delivering talks in their second language. For business owners who want to develop a range of speaking skills for their business such as pitching, storytelling, selling on webinars and delivering training and online courses. I truly believe that being able to engage, persuade and simply amaze your audience is one of the single most powerful skills you can have in life and in business. I also believe that everyone can break through their fear and be the confident speaker they want to be. I believe everyone can breakthrough their fear of public speaking, find their voice, master presentation skills and speak with impact to persuade, inspire and lead.

Amelia's Kitchen - cookery courses and accommodation in the Yorkshire Dales

amelia's kitchen - cookery courses and accommodation in the yorkshire dales

North Yorks

We are Ed and Amelia. After many years in Oxford, first studying (both of us), then working in archaeology labs (Ed), and running a fun and fabulous pop-up cookery school with the equally fun and fabulous Sophie Grigson (Amelia), we decided the time had come for a new adventure. So here we are. For Ed, it is more of a return to his roots, having grown up on a farm near Kirkby Lonsdale. For me (well, it is Amelia’s kitchen – I think you might guess that it is Amelia who does the social media!), it is a chance to put down some new roots, and thus far, I love it. So who are we? Ed is a chemist by academic background, a farmer by family background, and a curious mind and problem solver by nature. He now works for B4RN, mapping the route for super-fast broadband for the rural North. My history lies in the food, wine, and literature of Italy (specifically Renaissance five-act comedy and the food of Garfagnana, where I also make wine!). My formal food training was a Cordon Bleu diploma at Tante Marie, followed by a couple of years of restaurant work. To complement my food training (and because, let’s face it, I’m a learning addict) I also completed my WSET wine diploma. The highlight of the course was winning a prize for one exam, which involved being taken to Vinitaly in Verona by the lovely people at Liberty Wine. I was already hooked on Italian wine, but that just reinforced the habit!

Ruskin Road Repair Cafe

ruskin road repair cafe

Carshalton

At Ruskin Road Repair Cafe, we are committed to working with people to help them develop the skills to repair rather than replace broken or faulty consumer products, and keep them out of landfill. When you bring in an item which does not require professional expertise to safely fix, volunteer fixers will work with you to repair or maintain it, offering as much explanation or support as is necessary so that you can develop the confidence to try and fix the item yourself if it breaks again. Of course you are always welcome to come back again for more help! At a Repair Café there are the tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need. On clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, toys, et cetera. And there are also repair specialists such as electricians, seamstresses, carpenters and bicycle mechanics. Visitors bring their broken items from home. Together with the specialists they start making their repairs in the Repair Café. It’s an ongoing learning process. If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. Or you can lend a hand with someone else’s repair job. The Repair Café teaches people to see their possessions in a new light. And, once again, to appreciate their value. The Repair Café helps change people’s mindset. This is essential to kindle people’s enthusiasm for a sustainable society. But most of all, the Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is.
