Welcome Welcome to Maple Leaf Counselling and Training Centre. We are an independent NCPS accredited centre [https://nationalcounsellingsociety.org/] delivering a range of counselling and psychotherapeutic training courses from level 2 through to level 6. We also have a comprehensive range of CPD events. Overview / History of ML Maple leaf was the brainchild of our Director Gail Roberts, who wanted to set up a training centre that specialised in counselling. She didn’t want it to be like a traditional school, as she wanted to focus on the vocational side of the work, so she included a number of private practitioner rooms as well so that the centre is a working therapeutic base as well. Her aim was to be accessible to people from the wider society and we are currently working on how we access external funding to make the centre even more accessible. We have great respect for anyone who has decided that they would like to train to be a counsellor. And as a specialist centre that only trains counsellor and psychotherapeutic therapists, we have a unique insight into the industry. We recognise that people bring a wide range of different skills to the table from previous careers and experiences. Generally, we suggest that anyone looking at training to be a therapist begins at level 2 as this gives a good grounding some of the modalities and theories that you will be building on as you continue your training. On occasion, dependant on your previous experience you maybe able to use some of your prior learning and start at a different point. This is usually only possible if there has been as aspect of counselling either in your work or in other education i.e. Psychology degree with a counselling module. It is generally accepted that your Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (or equivalent) is required level to work as a counsellor. This is the level of qualification that is expected by all main ethical bodies such as the NCPS [https://nationalcounsellingsociety.org/] and BACP [https://www.bacp.co.uk/]. Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) & National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) CPCAB [https://www.cpcab.co.uk/about] are our awarding body and they are currently the UK’s leading awarding body specialised in counselling. They pride themselves on being built on a premise of counsellors and practitioners training counsellors and practitioners. This means that all of our tutors have to be in supervised practice whilst working with you on the courses they teach. This is a wonderful base to come from as it means that we have a large body of different experiences from counselling children and young people to sex therapists, psychodynamic, gestalt and more. This means that we offer a rich base to do your training from. We also encourage all of our team to join whichever ethical body they feel suits them as we hold a firm stance that it is unethical to ‘force’ someone to join a particular ethical body. CPCAB are regulated by The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), The Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA) and Qualifications Wales. These are the public bodies responsible for regulating qualifications in England, Northern Ireland and Wales respectively. (CPCAB 2024) Maple Leaf are a NCPS accredited centre and NCPS oversee our course content and training alongside CPCAB. NCPS audit on a yearly basis and CPCAB come in 2 -3 times a year to make sure that we are all running safe and ethical courses. In 2009, Zaytuna College was founded in Berkeley, CA, with a mission that called for grounding students in the Islamic scholarly tradition as well as in the cultural currents and critical ideas shaping modern society. Today, we welcome students from across the world to both our BA and MA programs. We are a community interest company called Choose Nature CIC with our site being located adjacent to the Wheal Martyn Clay Works, Carthew, mid-Cornwall. We aim to broaden the accessibility and inclusivity of outdoor learning opportunities and therapeutic support in nature. Mission statement: ‘Choose Nature CIC works to increase the wellbeing of individuals, communities and the environment by inspiring life long learning and care. Our calm enriching outdoor spaces are emotionally grounding and cultivate a strong relationship with nature’. We are continuing to restore and develop the site. It has so many exciting areas including gardening spaces, wooded areas, wildlife ponds, orchard, classroom, and poly tunnels. We currently have our weekly ‘Mamas in Nature’ group (supporting new mums and babies as transition into parenthood), ‘Making Tracks’ group (supporting young people with additional needs) and different volunteering opportunities as we establish a volunteer programme. We also host a variety of family events and workshops throughout the year. More recently we have been welcoming St Austell College students onto site to gain work experience on their construction course, as well as striving to become a Makaton Friendly Organisation. Holistic Therapist and Yogi - helping you achieve good health though natural therapies and Yoga. Totally Holistic Health was founded by myself, Julie Elder in 2005. I specialise in providing complementary therapy services. These include Yoga, Bowen, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, Kinesiology, Reflexology and Reiki. I am based in Cheadle Hulme covering the North Cheshire and South Manchester area. I have always had an interest in Natural Health even from an early age. After years of working in a corporate environment and seeing the stresses and strains it placed on the body, health and wellbeing I was confident that I needed a change of direction. The ideal opportunity came when my son started school. This was when I decided to retrain as a therapist. Within 6 weeks of starting my course I discovered I was pregnant with my daughter – who said that stress doesn’t affect fertility!! I completed the first year of my course, gave birth to my daughter in the summer and continued with the second year with baby in tow. I still however managed to achieve a college award and distinctions in my HND in Health and Complementary Therapies. The course gave me a fantastic grounding in all aspects of working in a therapeutic environment. This included counselling skills; psychology; sociology; diet and nutrition; anatomy and physiology. I also became qualified Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Swedish Massage and Indian head Massage. My knowledge and determination has never wavered. I love learning new skills, therapies and gaining new knowledge. Since qualifying in 2005 I have become qualified as a Reiki master; Advanced Bowen practitioner; Baby Massage instructor; Kinesiologist to diploma level and also hold qualifications in Pregnancy Massage; Tibetan Acupressure Head Massage; Natural face Lift Massage and Mindfulness. I am also enhancing my lifelong love of Yoga and have trained as a Yoga Teacher to enhance the treatments I can offer you. Having recently seen the devastating mental health issues after two years of coronavirus and lockdowns I also wanted to offer a supportive service to help with this too so embarked on an amazing Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy course which I completed in 2022. I am so pleased to be able this awesome modality to my therapy arsenal. Customer service is very important to me and I try to follow up each client’s treatment. Also maintaining and updating my training regularly helps me add additional skills and knowledge to help you receive the best help and advice I can give.

Being Swedish in origin I feel very strongly that our wellbeing and happiness should be more prominent in our way of life and the concept of Lagom, which means ‘just about right, not too much or too little’ is a key concept to Swedish people. This balance between work and pleasure is perhaps more clearly articulated in Scandinavia and sits well together with the key foundation of the Positive Psychology movement. After my initial Psychology degree I worked in the Further Education Sector and I still have a particular interest in adolescents and in Post 16 work. I did my Educational Psychology training at the Tavistock Clinic in London in the mid 90s, and I had a good grounding in Attachment and Resilience based frameworks as well as Family Therapy. Over the years, I have also specialised in specific learning difficulties as well as more recently in Positive Psychology with a particular interest in Coaching Psychology. Over the last year I have received Positive Psychology Coaching from one of Britain’s most well established Positive Psychologists, Miriam Akhtar. Being on the receiving end of good coaching has given me a personal insight into its transformational powers. Having been an educational psychologist for over 20 years in a number of different settings, including both Local Authorities and the Independent Sector, as well as assessments for students in Higher Education, I came across Positive Psychology when experiencing personal and health changes in my own life. I applied a number of Positive Psychology strategies such as The Keys To Happier Living, (See Action for Happiness below) and I learnt to keep my attention and focus in the right place in order to promote wellbeing. I learnt what my Character Strengths were which enabled me to see myself in a different light. I feel strongly that everybody would benefit from knowledge of these principles. I am therefore keen to provide Positive Psychology training and insights to individuals, families and schools.
