Expectations and aspirations are high here and we are committed to developing the young people in our care, whatever their talents. Children of all abilities succeed at this school and are encouraged to develop academically, physically and spiritually, fulfilling their potential in a happy, caring environment. When Ofsted last visited, it commented: “The all-pervading caring ethos ensures that pupils are happy and able to thrive from the moment they arrive at school. Pupils are very keen to share their pleasure of being at school and went out of their way to let inspectors know.” That is every bit as true today as it was then. Examination performance is very strong. At A level, students reach exceptional levels in a thriving Sixth Form of 350 students. Students routinely progress to Russell Group universities, including year-on-year to Oxford and Cambridge. In 2022, two students progressed to Oxford and Cambridge to read medicine, with a further moving to Oxford to study mathematics; in addition, one student is embarking on a degree in veterinary science. We are proud of the numbers of students who move on to university education, typically around 75% each year, and even more delighted in the variety of subjects that are chosen, following a rich A level experience here. Increasing numbers are also progressing to some prestigious higher-level apprenticeships, including one this year in software engineering with Lockheed Martin. At GCSE, students also perform well, both in value-added terms and in raw attainment. As a consequence, we have large numbers moving in to our Sixth Form, complemented every year with a number of students from other schools who choose to join us for their A level programme. Ofsted confirmed the strength in pastoral care alongside provision for purposeful learning by adding that we “have established a school that holds the academic success and emotional well-being of each pupil at its heart.” As a parent of four children myself, I am acutely aware of the increasing importance of education in today’s world and the role that we, as teachers, have to play in developing our children so that they are fully equipped to make positive contributions to society. The staff at Sheldon School are extremely committed and dedicated to ensure that this is the case and I am personally determined to see all children flourish here. I also value enormously the links between school and home, success being built on strong partnerships with parents and ourselves. The Pembrokeshire WI is a very active and dynamic WI Federation with 51 WI groups and over 1100 members. Our WI groups span the whole of the county's geography - from Saundersfoot, in the South, to St Dogmaels, in the North and the Preseli Hills, to the East. Wherever you live, in Pembrokeshire, there will (without doubt!) be a WI that you can join, just down the road from you! Many of our members also like to join several Wis – it just makes 'getting to know new friends' even better and, of course, means getting involved in so many and varied activities! The Pembrokeshire Federation was formed in 1921 - therefore, in 2021 we will be celebrating our 100th Anniversary. At the moment, our Federation and all of our WIs are busy planning for 'our Big Year'! In addition, in 2021, we will be hosting the NFWI Wales Conference, in April, 2021. The meetings, across our county, are all so varied – we are so lucky to have so many different groups – those that meet in the daytime, those that meet in the evening. We also have a great variety of groups with a big mix of ages as well as some that are slightly younger versus those that are slightly older. Whoever you are and whatever you like to do, you can guarantee that you will find a WI that suits you! We own our own House in the county town of Haverfordwest (WI house) which is open to members on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and 3pm – all our members are welcome to pop in and have a catch up and chat with a Board Of Trustee member – between those hours there is always someone there to welcome you! We use this house for meetings as well as hiring it out for the local community to use for day schools, educational course and seminars. We are fortunate to have a variety of sub-committees which organise the events both within Pembrokeshire and beyond – these include Sports & Leisure, Home Crafts, Membership & Community & Environment. We publish a monthly newsletter, which keeps WI members informed of all future events and enables groups to share information, across the county, too! Quite simply, Pembrokeshire, with all its beautiful landscapes and gentle pace of life, is blessed with having a WI Federation that is so friendly, dynamic and so welcoming no matter who you are, what your age or what your beliefs are – give it a try, you'll just find so many friends along the way!

doncaster book awards

The Doncaster Book Award strives to promote reading for pleasure among our young people, in order to create a positive attitude towards books and reading and to extend reading choices. This will, in turn, lead to improved literacy levels, better educational outcomes and thus improve future economic prospects for Doncaster’s children. We also strive to provide children with opportunities for new and exciting experiences based around books and reading, to encourage positive social interaction between young people from all parts of the Borough and thus help make Doncaster a thriving reading community. All About Us The Doncaster Book Award (DBA) is a not-for-profit Social Enterprise Company Limited by Guarantee. It is run by a committee of five volunteers who give their time free of charge. We are fully inclusive and all our events and activities are open to everyone and free to attend. ALL of the funding generated goes to cover running costs and provide our young people with fun and exciting reading-based activities. We are now into our 14th year of operation and have gone from 13 schools in our first year to over 75 in 2018. The DBA is unique in that it is entirely child-led; the website, logo and slogan have all been originally designed by the young people of Doncaster; they also choose the books on our lists, and they vote for the shortlist and winner each year. No adult gets a say! Our website is designed to give children a voice about what they are reading via our Reviews page and to showcase their activities. We are developing this idea further by providing slots for our young people on our monthly radio show and podcast on Sine FM. We provide an exciting and varied programme of events, activities and competitions that keep the profile of reading high, generate enthusiasm and the idea that reading is fun. These have been extremely varied and have included: visits from hugely popular authors such as Cressida Cowell, Andy Cope, Darren Shan, Simon Mayo, Cathy Cassidy and many more illustrator talks and workshops from artists including Chris Riddell, Viviane Schwarz, Liz Million, Chris Mould and Martin Brown Drama and Dance workshops working with a local theatre company, Talegate Theatre Vlogging workshops Poetry slams Ceramics workshops Sports-themed events ... the list goes on! Our students have worked in many stately homes around this country and in Scottish lodges. Other students use the course as the first step to a career in the food industry – as journalists in top magazines, running restaurants, cooking agencies, cookery schools, party planning organisations, event management and catering companies. They also love to cook for their family and friends. Amongst our famous alumni are Pippa Middleton, Santa Montefiore and Danny Goffey (who came third in Celebrity Masterchef). Ellie Howes We use the best local ingredients from our gardens, nearby family farms and artisans to make dishes from around the world with fantastic flavours, that are easy to cook. Jane Averill, who leads the Grange, is as passionate about produce as she is about her students. Her global travels enable her to understand and educate about food and cooking through dishes from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We share the concerns raised by Arts Council England and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) about the risks faced by cultural professionals as well as the threats to cultural heritage because of this conflict and we send our support to all creative practitioners and cultural organisations and institutions affected. 5 June 2020: Stanley Picker Gallery and our partner venue Dorich House Museum recognise we must do more as cultural organisations to be actively anti-racist. We commit to taking immediate steps to implement a clear plan of action to address systemic racism at every level of our organisations, whilst actively seeking and welcoming critical engagement from diverse perspectives in this process. Stanley Picker Gallery at Kingston University is one of the leading university galleries and commissioning venues in the UK, working with artists, designers, students, academics and members of the local community to encourage creativity, learning, research and innovation. Established in 1997 with the ongoing support of the Stanley Picker Trust, the Gallery forms part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio and is a principal cultural interface between Kingston University and its civic communities in South-West London and beyond. From its island location on the Hogsmill River, our venue is a creative hub, a production site and a presentation space that functions as an “expanded studio” dedicated to commissioning and curating contemporary art and design practice, generating a dynamic programme of exhibitions, events and participation activities staged onsite, offsite and online. Appointed each year through public open call, our Stanley Picker Fellowships in Design and Fine Art support a diversity of contemporary practitioners to research, create and premiere ambitious new work, by providing generous grants, free studio space, professional expertise and valuable access to the world-class workshop facilities at Kingston School of Art. Our Participation Programme involves us working collaboratively with schools, colleges, community groups and local residents of all ages, to deliver a range of creative activities and shared learning and professional development opportunities for students, that engage everyone in the life of the Gallery, our partner venue Dorich House Museum and the wider University. In 2008, Hilary Lawson, an already long-standing resident of Hay-on-Wye, saw that the Methodist Chapel at the end of town was up for sale. Thinking that this uniquely creative town would benefit hugely from access to a gamut of arts and events, The Globe at Hay was founded.
