Hereward College is a national college for people with disabilities and additional needs based in Coventry. It offers learners a varied curriculum that focuses on skills for independent living and employment. The college has both day and residential provision, which caters for a whole range of needs ranging from students with autism, physical difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties and complex disabilities. With a person centred approach, which is destination-led, learners follow a study programme designed to meet their needs and support progression. There is a real focus on employability, and every learner has access to work experience opportunities linked to their learning. Learners also have the opportunity to take part in Hereward’s supported internship study programme with one of the college’s partner employers that enables them to gain valuable experience within a supported environment. A range of additional support is available to students to ensure their journey through college runs as smoothly as possible. Learners can access speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social and emotional support, nursing support, and independent learning support. The college also offers respite care breaks for 16 to 25 year olds which provide young people with a taste of residential life, a chance to socialise with peers and take part in group and college activities.

Kate is a qualified Primary School teacher, Mindfulness and Neuro-Linguistic Practitioner as well as an Emotional Freedom Technique Practitioner, trained in Understanding Mental Health, Understanding Autism, Challenging Behaviour, Life Coaching and a Growth Mindset advocate with over 20 years’ experience working within the education and training sector. Being a teacher has allowed me to recognise where I believe there are gaps in the development of children and this has led me down the much rewarding path of mental health. I have always been really interested in why some children and adults achieve and why others don’t and all of my wonderings have been answered when I look at mental health, self-esteem, growth mindset and mindfulness. My passion for mental health has led to me teaching Life Coaching skills and understanding that if we can work on changing our thoughts then we really can change our lives. And yes, our thoughts and life outlook can be changed!

nvr innovations

Denise and Margaret initially introduced NVR into Southampton City training over 40 professionals and parents to become NVR practitioners (level 3) including members of, Child Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), and Social Services. Over 30 NVR groups are now run per year within the city from early intervention to specialist autism groups. Since then they have worked in partnership with Educational Psychologists in Renfrewshire to blend the NVR interventions with their existing nurture programme within the educational setting. Over the last two years they have trained staff to deliver in NVR so they can use whole school approaches, group work and individual work throughout Renfrewshire. They are currently training a small number of staff to become trainers so that they can maintain NVR within their agencies. Alongside delivering training to individuals, Denise and Margaret have also delivered training to City Councils and have just completed a year long project to train 41 staff to Hampshire County Council so that they can provide NVR groups across the region.

Mara James is the driving force behind the Extraordinary Lives Foundation. Originally from New York, Mara relocated to California with her husband, Kenneth, and three children in 2007. They established Kenneth’s OBGYN practice and for seven years Mara ran the busy office. In 2014 her world fell apart. Out of the blue, at aged 48, Mara experienced a severe manic episode and was diagnosed as bipolar. Mara and Kenneth had already been dealing with mental struggles in their family as they have a child who has Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. Mara sought help wherever she could find it and will be forever grateful to her psychiatrist and the many gifted healers who helped guide her back to mental health and wellbeing. The magical gift that has emerged from her battle is a determination to encourage prevention and early diagnosis of mental challenges in children and encourage parents to explore holistic options as well as traditional medicine.

Hi, I'm Carol, a musician, performer and educator based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Since childhood I have been involved in the performing arts throughout school, training in dance from the age of 5 years and performing in school music and drama productions. Since then I have continued performing and studying, gaining a BA (Hons) Degree in Dance, teaching dance at Acting Up Theatre School and in after-school clubs, writing and performing my own poetry, performing in Theatre in Education and singing and playing percussion in various bands across the North East and Europe. I have worked extensively at Sage Gateshead across their Learning and Participation Programme, as a Project Musician and Programme Leader for their CoMusica, Early Years, Loud & Clear Foster and Adoptive Families and Young People's Programmes, delivering music-making projects and devising training in Early Years & Family Learning, Inclusive Practice and Working With Young People With Autism. I have worked collaboratively in partnerships with The Great North Children's Hospital, North East Autism Society, Children North East, North Tyneside Family Intervention, Durham, Gateshead and Newcastle Fostering and Adoption Services, Family Intervention Services and Music Services (HUBS) within Primary Education, SEND and PRU across the North East. I was a vocalist and percussion player with Bridie Jackson and The Arbour, a four-piece contemporary folk/acoustic band based in Newcastle. Gaining widespread acclaim, we received radio play on BBC 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 Music, played live sessions for Dermot O’Leary and Radio 4′s Loose Ends, and won a Journal Culture Award for their Arts Council-funded project, Music in Museums, and performed on multiple stages at the legendary Glastonbury Festival, having beaten over 8,000 contenders to win the 2013 Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition. I am a Festival Compere, having worked with Cambridge Folk Festival since 2015 and smaller festivals, including Maddy Prior's Stepping Stones Festival in Cumbria. I am now a Director of Sound Sense and work as a Freelance Musician working with babies, the elderly and all ages in between.
