Artist Profile : Neo-Japonism artist and calligrapher RIE TAKEDA ( Hokkaido / Japan ) Rie started practicing calligraphy at the age of five under the creative supervision of her grandmother, a distinguished “GAYU-Ryu” calligrapher. Later she completed the master of the Gayu calligraphy school. It laid a solid foundation for her development of the SUMIE technique in calligraphic design. Following her art and design studies in Sapporo and London, Rie’s inspiration and enthusiasm for new forms of art, paired with her knowledge of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and design, led her to discover the Neo-Japonism style. The artist’s past 15 years of living in Europe have been incredibly creatively productive. As well as Neo-Japonism painting, Rie produces calligraphy works, Washi paper/Vintage kimono collages, illustrations and works in Body-Art. Rie works on several projects, collaborations and exhibitions - both in Europe and Japan.

Lorna’s considered, process driven craftsmanship expresses her mindful, immersive placement printing style. Blessed Unrest prints are an antidote to mass production and aimed at people looking for something unique and exclusive. A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, Lorna was awarded a 1st class Hons Degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Printed Textile Design. She also hold a City and Guilds Adult and Further Education teaching qualification. Lorna values the sharing of knowledge and skills with others and has delivered and facilitated art and design projects for many years in community, FE and HE. Working with others to expand her practice, find design solutions and research new processes are important factors in Blessed Unrest's creation process. Lorna has been involved in many exciting projects and continues to pursue new connections, support collaborations and undertake commissions. Opening in 2023 INK on MESH- Community Access Print Studio is to become a new exciting teaching space and home to the Blessed Unrest brand.

We are a surface and product design studio, offering fresh and exciting surface finishes for the interior design industry. Our surfaces are characterised by their colour, pattern and craftsmanship and are all hand cast and finished in our Nottingham studio. HOW WE WORK We collaborate with architects, interior designers and creative agencies to deliver unique surface finishes for a wide range of projects. We work on a commission basis, developing clients initial ideas into one of a kind final products. Clients can choose from our range of in-house designs, customised versions of these or work closely with us to develop completely personalised outcomes. THE TEAM Olivia founded the studio in 2015 after completing a degree in textile design at Central Saint Martins. Olivia’s focus within the studio is on developing new surface finishes as well as working closely with clients to realise their ideas through colour and pattern experimentation.

Today, we have two thriving community restaurants in Bristol, each with its own loyal following. Our spaces are modern and fresh, just like the food we serve. The design of our spaces was inspired by the pizza that would be served: simple, premium ingredients with great presentation. And the craftsmanship is telling: bespoke fittings, vibrant colours and top-quality materials that reflect the pizza being served – simple and premium. We have a wonderfully diverse team of chefs and front of house staff from across Europe, many of whom have worked for us for since day one. Their dedication and loyalty have made Pizza Workshop the successful business that it is today.

I'm a wooden boatbuilder, who specialises in building lightweight, skin-on-frame boats and runs kayak & canoe-building courses. Designing and making simple, beautiful and usable boats gives me huge satisfaction. At school and university I always had access to workshops. I grew up kayaking in Devon, then much further afield (Nepal, British Columbia, The Alps...). They were the things I enjoyed the most. But after graduating with an MA from the Royal College of Art, I didn’t set foot in a workshop for over a decade. I worked in a digital world, designing good experiences for people on the web. I set up my own company and taught design at university. At weekends and in the evenings, I did up a couple of VW vans, and worked on our family home. When a friend died from cancer I knew life was too short, and I had to get back in the workshop and on the water. Looking to weave together a life-long love of kayaking, design and craftsmanship, I moved to Lyme Regis and enrolled to train at The Boat Building Academy. When I returned to Bristol in 2015, the Underfall Yard had just re-opened some of their historic workshops with Lottery Funding and I took on a unit. It’s now a place to make boats that I can be proud of, that people use and that will last. It’s a satisfying reward when I help people build a boat and they say “I made that!” Whether you build a boat, or I build it for you, it would be my pleasure to help you climb aboard your very own Shipshape boat.
