Newspapers publish heartbreaking pictures, we read statistics which boggle the mind in their numbers, learn stories which appall in their tales of suffering. At the same time running through the difficult realities are threads of potential, of optimism, resilience and of capacity for hope. It is here that Ashoka strives to work. For more than thirty years, Ashoka has identified and supported the world’s best social entrepreneurs – leaders with innovative new ideas which can transform broken systems for the better, in fields from health to human rights, education to civic engagement, economic development to environment. In this time we’ve elected nearly 4000 Ashoka Fellows in 90 countries across the world. In a collaboration between Ashoka Germany and Zalando, Hello Europe was created in 2016 to identify the most powerful and proven solutions to challenges surrounding migration, integration and refugee movements with the aim of bringing them to scale in regions most in need. Over time a European, cross-border network of solutions began to emerge, and we began to identify a new paradigm around migration and integration. Now 3 years on, Hello Europe aims to provide a vision of the kind of work happening in Europe and around the globe, which is creating a better society for people on the move as well as for those who meet them. There is a lot at stake: by providing the refugees with only enforced isolation, a lost education, and half-hearted integration, nobody wins. My name is Jonah Hughes. I made my first blade (straight razor) when I was around 16 years old. I was fascinated by it by just kept it as a hobby. I completed a degree in mechatronics engineering whilst keeping tinkering on the side. After I graduated, I decided to pursue my calling and see where it would take me. This is where I grew up. The garage was around about 10m^2, as well as holding the boiler plus storage for miscellaneous homeware. The first knife I made was using a hole in the ground and a hairdryer to heat up some coals so that I could blacksmith an old file. After this I was hooked. I made small knives as procrastination for exams, and was soon progressing to kitchen knives. A while passed of doing much the same whilst at university, until I decided to leave my masters year to pursue this, and I haven’t looked back. The workshop has moved to a larger location at my grandparents house, and I now call myself a full time craftsman The Logo As soon as I was of age, I got my first tattoo in a relatively concealed place. It is in an ancient script called Elder Futhark as I wanted the meaning of it to be just for me. I decided that this language would perfect for the logo – spelling out WS.15 for Workshop 15 My Vision My version of success isn’t to have lots of money, or a nice house or car. This is reflected in my work, which I do purely from passion and love of the craft. For this reason, I am able to do projects that others may find not profitable enough or too challenging, because I am living for my work rather than working to live.

What is different about our outdoor learning training from others is that it has been created by teachers specifically for schools and nurseries. Plus, we have developed a specific approach to help make the teaching of outdoor learning easy for the practitioner but also to help with the quality of our sessions and to ensure we are out there for a reason. We have different pathways. One route for those in formal settings such as schools and nurseries such as early years educators, LSA’s and teachers. Another is for home settings such as childminders and home educators. There are different pathways for the different age ranges. If you educate all ages, then go down them all! FAQS: Are you like Forest Schools? We are NOT Forest School. We often get confused with Forest School, but we are entirely different. Many of our schools have Forest Schools and Muddy Teachers trained and use both approaches effectively. Forest School is holistic and encourages high risks to promote social and emotional well-being, such as tools and fire and typically is in a woodland area with prolonged amounts of time outside, such as a full day or entire afternoon. The Muddy Puddle Teacher is an Outdoor Learning Approach, essentially an extension of inside teaching and taking lessons outside. So the IAI seeks to challenge the notion that our present accepted wisdom is the truth. It aims to uncover the flaws and limitations in our current thinking in search of alternative and better ways to hold the world. The IAI was founded in 2008 with the aim of rescuing philosophy from technical debates about the meaning of words and returning it to big ideas and putting them at the centre of culture. Not in aid of a more refined cultural life, but as an urgent call to rethink where we are. That rethinking is urgent and necessary because the world of ideas is in crisis. The traditional modernist notion that we are gradually uncovering the one true account of reality has been undermined by a growing awareness that ideas are limited by culture, history and language. Yet in a relative world the paradoxes of postmodern culture has left us lost and confused. We do not know what to believe, nor do we know how to find the answers. The IAI was founded to help address this intellectual crisis. Our research and editorial teams have worked around the clock to face up to this challenge and unearth fresh ways of thinking that might guide us in an uncertain world. When, with the founding of the IAI, we declared that philosophy and big ideas should be at the heart of our culture, we did not do so out of reverence for ideas or an attachment to the academy and intellectual life. I have previously worked as a horse-riding instructor as well as a travel agent, and before going on maternity leave, was working in customer service. After having Hailey I couldn’t bare the thought of sitting behind a desk all day while she went to nursery. I like to be active and love meeting new people. I took Hailey to Tots Play from the time she was just a few weeks old and we loved it. The benefits and results were amazing. From getting her to sleep better and helping her get over colic, to chats and advice from the parents and it was lovely seeing how much Hailey loved the interaction too. When the opportunity came to take over Tots Play in the area, I was so excited and was determined to make it happen. The support I received in the classes really helped me as a first-time mum, and I am passionate about providing this for others parents. Running the business also allowed me to escape the office environment, meet new people and be there to see my daughter grow up - a perfect fit for me! The Tots play program offers a unique experience using massage, yoga, music, sign language and sensory play all in one class. The program is designed to aid your little one’s development using easy, inexpensive and fun ways to play together, both at class and that you can continue at home too. We are an amazing special school and 6th Form with up to 150 students aged between 11 to 19 years old. Students are taught in classes of up to 12 individuals, supported by a teacher and normally at least 1 teaching assistant. Most new students join us in September in either Year 7 or Year 12 but we do admit young people into other year groups throughout the year where vacancies exist. Our students all have complex learning & additional needs (LAN) and all are supported by an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) which is reviewed annually. The majority of students join us are operating at least 3 to 4 years below chronological expectations. Our students’ additional needs include global developmental delay, autism, ADHD / ODD/ADD, anxiety, OCD, sleep apnoea, cerebral palsy, visual or hearing impairment, dyspraxia/coordination difficulties, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, chromosomal abnormalities including Down syndrome, speech, language & communication difficulties. It is our explicit aim to facilitate every opportunity to help address our students wider ‘therapeutic’ needs. Whilst some of our students have some mobility difficulties, due to the split-level nature of our site we are unable to cater for young people in wheelchairs. We describe our young people as not disabled but differently abled. We have a highly dedicated, experienced and specially trained staff team committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for every young person. We believe in building a real and lasting sense of community and belonging – we are proud of being an especially welcoming school. Feeling safe and developing positive and trusting relationships are key to our students’ success. Securing our students’ wellbeing and positive mental health is central to our provision. We employ a multi-disciplinary approach in meeting the needs of our students and each individual is following their own personalised programme. Papu Jordan is a fully qualified Reiki Practitioner & Teacher and Massage Therapist with a particular interest in women’s health issues. She is also a Sound Healer, Meditation Teacher and workshop facilitator. Papu was brought up in an immigrant family in which western medicine was used alongside more traditional methods and natural treatments, and so whilst developing a career in teaching, she continued gaining knowledge and experience of Complementary Therapies and using them in her own life. Papu now lives in Harpenden with her husband & Springer spaniel and has been using complementary therapies with her family for many years. She chants every day, is studying the ancient language of Sanskrit and has attended the Teacher Training programme at Sanskrit@St James’, London, which is further informing her work with Mantra & Meditation. Papu Jordan Holistic Therapies for Women was established in 2006 with a view to helping and supporting busy women with the stresses of modern life through Complementary Therapies. Since then, the practice has grown with many clients coming for short term sessions to deal with acute issues or as a treat. Others require longer courses of treatments to help with more chronic conditions or as maintenance/preventative therapeutic sessions. Many have gone on to do Reiki training with Papu and become part of her local Reiki network of students and practitioners through Reiki shares, workshops and other events. Papu has experience treating all ages – from babies & children right through to the elderly; and in supporting people with a wide variety of conditions, including life limiting ones, both as a Grove House volunteer therapist and in private practice. She has undertaken Cancer Care courses at Mount Vernon Hospital and attended courses and workshops led by Estelle Edwards, William Lee Rand, Frank Arjava Petter, Pamela Miles, Kathleen Prasad, Phillip Permutt, Jo Rose, Laura Joy Mason, Gabriella Burnel (Gaiea Sanskrit), Sue Pready (College of Sound Healing) and Bodhi Aspirations, Sanskrit@St James’ amongst others, as well as running collaborative workshops with other local therapists and teachers.
