The Leeds Library is the oldest surviving subscription library of its type in the UK and was founded in 1768. Annual membership from £66. Founded in 1768, The Leeds Library is a gem of a heritage library and the oldest surviving subscription library of its kind in the British Isles. We have a fascinating history. We’re Leeds’s oldest cultural institution—a thriving hub of creativity, ideas and inspiration and a book lover’s paradise! Amongst our founding members were eminent doctors, surgeons, clergymen, leading industrialists and businessmen, alongside members of The Royal Society. Revd Dr Joseph Priestley, our first secretary and most likely the primary driving force behind the Library’s creation, was perhaps the most famous of these men. A leading enlightenment thinker, radical preacher, and Fellow of The Royal Society, Priestley was celebrated for his experiments concerning electricity and oxygen—and the invention of carbonated water! In the beginning, the Library occupied a back room at Joseph Ogle’s bookshop on Kirkgate and he became the first librarian. When he died in 1774, his daughter, Mary, was appointed Librarian and remained so for another 37 years until her death in 1813. Over this period, the Library proved to be so successful that it outgrew this modest first home and moved further along Kirkgate to the Rotation Office. A few years later and a move to new premises was required once again to house the ever-growing collection of books. In 1808, the Library moved to a new purpose-built home on Commercial Street where we remain to this day. Built by Thomas Johnson, the town’s leading architect, the grade II* listed building is a rare surviving example of a Georgian public library.

In 2018, I went along to the Potters Bar carnival and despite never having done this type of work before, I decided I wanted to join as a carer after seeing all the information and talking to the staff. I was invited to an interview and the rest is history! The company is great, so friendly and flexible to work for. My typical day consists of checking my rota and visiting my regular clients. Each client is different, with morning visits getting people out of bed and feeding them breakfast, lunch time visits can be more about companionship, with evening visits a time to ensure everyone is ready for bed and happy to settle for the evening. I was so scared of changing jobs after 18 years working in retail, however over the past 12 months I’ve built up some amazing relationships with my clients and I know they are so pleased to see me when I visit them in their home. The company has a real open-door policy - all the carers meet on regular basis, and discuss ideas, improvements, clients and have a general catch up over a cuppa. The role is different every day as you are dealing with people and building trust, but it’s so rewarding and I would thoroughly recommend Wilnash – a great family feel company, who have given me the confidence and skills I need to carry out this role. Wilnash accelerated my training and helped me to qualify for the Care Certificate in under a year - I am so happy having made the change in careers; I am so much more fulfilled than I ever was plus I have more time with my family.

Hi, I’m Angharad and I live in Hull with my husband Paul, our two boys Caden and Colby and dog Phoebe. Since having my sons, I longed for a career change that gave me more time with my family. With being in the hairdressing industry for 19 years I knew what I enjoyed most was working with people. After much research I found Tots Play. Not only had I found a class that appealed to me as a mother with all the variety it offered, but also made me excited at the thought of being able to help parents or carers develop their connection to their child with all the benefits baby massage, yoga, signing, music, movement and sensory play provides. I will also make sure you take away lots of fantastic ideas to carry on the fun times at home. Having my youngest in the first lockdown has shown me how important baby and toddler classes are, not just for little ones but for helping parents bond with their child, as well as building invaluable supportive relationships with others in the same situation. After finishing school I was fortunate enough to be chosen for another full time scholarship place at Millennium Dance 2000 College for 3 years performing arts training. Even with all this incredible training I still look back fondly at the small performing arts school I attended one night a week in Leeds : Scala Kids. I owe a lot of my skills to the training I received there and would look forward to going to my classes every week without the pressure of taking exams or doing competitions. I was made to feel like part of the "Scala" family and felt free to be creative and express my talents. This is how I want the Theatre Skills Academy to be- a place where kids can come to be creative, build confidence, feel equal, learn new skills, improve their talents, and have FUN. My name is Elaine and I love yoga! I've been enjoying yoga myself for about 45 years and teaching for 15 years. My Bicester yoga classes are gentle and mindful. No rushing from posture to posture. We take time to be. My aim when teaching is for you to be comfortable, relaxed and happy. For you to feel calm and confident, free from physical tension and mental stress. Most of the ladies in my classes are in their 50's, 60's and 70's and appreciate the more gentle approach I take in teaching. Classes start with a short period of breath awareness, followed by some gentle warm up movements. Then we enjoy some postures (asanas) often in the form of sequences so you can lose yourself in the soft flow of the movements. We finish with some breathwork (pranayama) and a lovely relaxation leaving you feeling calm and peaceful. I like to drip in little glimpses of the philosophy behind yoga and will sometimes share a short reading or poem to enhance the mood of the class. In addition, I integrate aspects of mindfulness into my teaching. Whilst none of us can remove the stresses from our lives, we can develop coping mechanisms to avoid tension building physically, mentally and emotionally. Yoga can help you release tight muscles and improve your sense of balance physically and mentally. You learn to unravel the knots of physical, mental and emotional tension and gain a greater sense of wellbeing. Let your yoga class be an oasis of calm in a busy life... like pressing a pause button .. time to unwind and refresh. Since 1981, BCD has served the disadvantaged of Little Rock’s 12th Street Corridor. BCD, Inc. began as Black Community Developers. It was initially an outreach program of Theressa Hoover Memorial United Methodist Church. In 2010, BCD became Better Community Development. This name change served to reflect the inclusive nature of BCD’s programs. In 1992, Rev. Dr. William H. Robinson, Jr. formed the Fighting Back Initiative. Funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and an alliance with the City of Little Rock made the program possible. In later years, it would evolve into the Neighborhood Support Center. State, federal, and private support along with a half-cent tax were the primary sources of funding. As a result of a partnership with the City and HUD, the Hoover Treatment Center was created. The Center provides outpatient and residential services for people with substance abuse problems. The Center also includes a homeless shelter, an HIV/AIDS ministry, job training, and permanent and supportive housing. Not only do BCD’s programs impact the lives of individuals but extend into the community’s infrastructure. Building affordable housing for low-to-moderate-income families makes a great impact south of 630. The Affordable Housing Program is certified by the Arkansas Development Finance Authority to provide monthly homebuyer-education courses. Participants become eligible for state grants to assist with home-buying costs. Instructors are volunteers from four area banks who assess the curriculum. Today, BCD is expanding its reach and vision to include even more important challenges facing the city. Its latest expansion, the Empowerment Center, houses a state-licensed treatment program and permanent housing for people with special needs. It provides a revitalized facility for career, life skills, and technology training. It also focuses on environmental issues right in the heart of the same neighborhood where BCD was created.
