Born and raised in Birmingham, Tom has always been obsessed with making things. This obsession continued right through school and on to London where he studied furniture making. It was whilst in London his unusual style prompted his teacher to suggest he study sculpture. Taking his teachers advice after completing the year, he moved back to Birmingham and began his sculpture degree in Wolverhampton commuting daily before opting to move to West Wales School of Art - where they teach the fascinating process of bronze casting - to complete his degree. After completing his degree, Tom once again moved back to Birmingham where he continued his sculpture practise alongside working with family to further refine the carpentry and woodworking skills he learnt in London before setting up by himself a few years ago. The relatively recent decision to start offering courses came about almost by chance. The positive experience Tom had in West Wales ignited a desire to want to teach his skills to others – something that became even more apparent after taking on a couple of apprentices. However, with business being so busy it wasn’t until the apprentices highlighted the lack of woodworking courses available in the Birmingham area outside of full-time college or university courses. It was at this point Tom realised that this would be a great opportunity to give those interested in woodworking a way in without having to commit full time.

Other birds include House Sparrow, Starling, Greenfinch, and typical garden species like the Robin and Blue Tit. The lake has several different species of waterbirds, including three species of geese – Canada, Egyptian and Greylag. We have often been asked for help and advice and we’d share the best of what we learnt, and we would often be told we should coach for a living. So, that’s what we did: we left our pharmacy and IT careers, and after qualifying from gold star training providers, undertaking hours of self-study to compliment the face to face training, and gaining the requisite hours for accreditation by coaching pro-bono we have developed our own unique coaching system to help children bring out the genius within themselves. Accelerated learning, exam success, grammar/independent school applications, university/Oxbridge applications and a personal brand portfolio are areas we specialise in, as well as the holistic element of learning: resilience and the emotions of beliefs and behaviours.

I am passionate about resilience and helping people understand how important resilience is in our lives. I studied with some of the leading international experts working to promote resilience. For the last 5 years I have been actively promoting resilience with individuals, families, organisations and communities. I had spent many years working in the field of positive psychology and therapy and it was here in Barcelona that I discovered the world of resilience and was lucky enough to attend the first post graduate course in the Promotion of Resilience at the University of Barcelona. This allowed me to meet and learn from leading figures in Resilience work in Europe and Latin America and the most generous teachers. I also studied a postgraduate diploma in mental health and migration. Moving around can bring opportunity but also challenges. I have lived in many countries and met a lot of diverse and truly inspiring people in different cultures and languages. Living an international life can feel like an amazing adventure but also comes with its challenges and I have worked with many individuals and families over the years helping them to find their feet again. Life experience, literature, music and films have always fed my resilience work but I have been studying and researching along the way to back up my instincts with analysis and ideas based on theory and practice. About the YIMC This year the YIMC will be held 20 – 25 July 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal! Email us to find out more: alix@yimc.org The Aim of the YIMC The aim of the YIMC is for students to learn and develop skills in a realistic situation, acting as both counsel and as a mediator. Problems are based on cases where the Convention on International Sale of Goods applies. Method: Each school’s team consists of three participants and a coach. All members of the team must be enrolled in a programme of tertiary legal studies and none may be licensed to practice law in any jurisdiction. The competition consists of three “tiers”; a training course of two days, the counsel competition (one day), and the mediator competition (one day). Each team participates in all three tiers, and competes for both awards, one as Best Student Mediation Counsel Team and one as Best Student Mediator. Students take turns being evaluated and playing the roles of the disputing parties Programme: First tier: Two-Day Mediation Training Course. Training provides basic knowledge and techniques to those who do not study mediation at their university. This levels the playing field, and serves as a review for those who already have a basic knowledge. At the end of the two days’ training the teams designate and announce which of their members will compete as mediator and which two will compete as their counsel team.
