Welcome to the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN). Our aim is to carry out high quality research into the function of the nervous system in health and disease. We have a multidisciplinary workforce of close to 500 people, mostly based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, but also spread across the University. We are an integrated part of the broader neuroscience community across Oxford, with many links to other departments. Many of our scientists are also practising clinicians and provide general and specialist care through the Oxford University Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust. Through our DPhil programme, and our very strong group of early career researchers we play an important role in developing the careers of young scientists. NDCN builds on a long history of research in neurology, brain imaging, eye disorders, and anaesthetics in Oxford which has made major contributions to our understanding of how the brain works and to the development of treatments which have changed lives. Major discoveries made by NDCN scientists include the discovery of a type of cell in the eye which helps regulate our body clock, new techniques to image the human brain, devices to make anaesthesia safer, methods to prevent vascular diseases of the brain including stroke and forms of dementia, understanding and treating chronic pain, pioneering treatments such as gene therapy for inherited eye disorders, and the diagnosis and treatment of immunological disorders of the nervous system. Liverpool Law Society boasts 2500 or so members in practice; it is one of the largest local Law Societies in England and Wales. Membership is broad and varies from practitioners engaged in high-value commercial work to complex charity work. The Society prides itself in being at the forefront of debate and has been able to communicate on behalf of its members their concerns in a number of areas both public and professional, and at regional and national levels. The directors meet twice a year with local MPs where there is exchange of information, news about bills going through parliament and constituent issues are raised and discussed and parliamentary questions are put down on behalf of LLS members. Separately, the directors also meet with the nominated councillors from the Liverpool City Region local authorities. This again is a useful way of ensuring our members’ concerns and issues, including those of their clients, can be raised at one of these meetings. The councillors also come to the Society with matters their constituents are facing and we work together on joint initiatives where there is a common aim. The Society also has good communication channels with The Law Society, the SRA and the LeO, where members’ issues can be raised and matters affecting the legal profession discussed. On a regional level, Liverpool Law Society is a member of the Joint V, a grouping of autonomous local law societies that meet and discuss common issues affecting membership organisations for legal professionals, sharing best practice. The members of the Joint V are Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester Law Societies. United the Joint V have a strong voice nationally, representing over 10,000 legal professionals. In addition to our representation role, Liverpool Law Society runs an extensive legal training programme with approximately 100 seminars and conferences organised every year in various specialist areas of law. WRAP Resources Asia Pacific Pte Ltd is a Singapore-based “cold works” goods and services specialist, with expertise throughout repairs and upkeep, including pipeline rehabilitation, pipe support implementation and wider plant maintenance. We excel in “cold repairs”, particularly for oil and gas sectors. A defining point of this excellence is our ATEX certified cold grinding and cutting tools in Zones 1 and 2 areas, utilised for remedial and preventive maintenance operations. At WRAP, we realise that unscheduled plant shut downs are enforced for safety concerns when traditional metallic repairs require hot welding for expended gas and oil pipelines. However, our non-metallic repair is provided as a full turnkey cold work solution, thus guaranteeing that strengthening pipelines and pipe support involves no heat-reliant procedures. WRAP’s world-class services significantly eradicates external corrosion and structurally rehabilitates the asset, whilst also totally erasing the need for costly plant shut downs. Our Neptune Research Inc. composites, together with the use of Safety Tools Allmet, enables us to perform maintenance under a “cold work permit”, thus providing a cost efficient solution and boost safety to a higher level. Part of WRAP’s pipeline rehabilitation service includes HDD field joint protection. In these procedures we focus on the complete protection of field joint coatings and prepare the pipe for the pull through by providing a robust mechanical protection over the field joint coating. It is evident that the integrity of composite repairs depends largely on how well the compounds are adhered to the surface of the pipe. We have studied that the profile of the prepared surface significantly affects the adhesion integrity of the composite repairs. However, many of the classified sites cannot be shut down for use of hot works surface preparation methods as grinding and sandblasting and as a consequence, many of the repairs were not performed satisfactorily due to poor adhesion to unclean surface. Through matching epoxy/resin based solutions with “cold grinding” methods, we are able to deliver an unparalleled process that ensures quality application and workmanship.
