Design and Technology at Bankfields Primary School is essentially a practical subject that allows children to think imaginatively and creatively.The school has two buildings known as the East Building and the West Building. The main office and the Headteacher’s office are located in the West Building. The Reception, Y1, Y2, Y3 and Year 4 children are based in the West Building. The Y5 and Y6 team plus the Nursery are based in the East Building. The school is organised into four teams – Mrs C Ward Foundation Stage (EYFS and KS1 lead) Mr P Bennett Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) Mrs K Lee Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) Each team is led by a senior member of staff. Children in every team benefit from the extra support provided by teaching assistants. There is a high level of staffing in the Early Years team to ensure the particular needs of the younger pupils are fully met. On entry to school each child is placed in a mixed ability class in the care of a class teacher. The class teacher is responsible for the learning and pastoral care of the children in his/her class. If you wish to talk about any aspect of your child’s development, the class teacher is usually the first point of contact.

The research arm of The Griffin Institute is working on two areas of potential benefit to people living with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) by creating a replacement bowel tissue for transplantation and by developing an in vitro platform for evaluating candidate drugs for the treatment of those patients who are not suitable for surgery. Our tissue engineering approach could also be used to treat other bowel diseases including reconstructive surgery after cancer removal. Approximately 50% of patients with Crohn’s disease and 20% with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) will require life-changing surgery that involves removal of part of the bowel resulting in complications with stool frequency, malnutrition and infections. As a proof of concept, we will grow stem cells on a biological inert scaffold in the laboratory to optimise the conditions for seeding the patient’s own stem cells for eventual transplantation. Use of the patients own stem cells avoids immune rejection. This proof of concept will lay the foundation for translational studies and eventual clinical trials for the management of UC and other bowel conditions in humans. We also hope that this work will lead to the development of a 3D model where the model tissue populated with healthy cells will be used to better understand the natural progression of UC for the purposes of testing interventions for early stage disease.

History Bluemoon College started out as Antek Security Training providing training for the security industry. I was born in Ohio and grew up in a small farming village before qualifying as a teacher and moving to England in 2003. After getting married, my husband and I moved back to his hometown in Cornwall. Outside of the clinic, you can find me exploring the local beaches and coastal paths (with a coffee, of course). I decided to return to my passion for caring for others in the health and fitness industry (my original career path prior to teaching) after dealing with work-related stress and suffering from chronic pain following a severe back injury. As a result, I have a special interest in the connection between mental health and how we feel pain. My goal is to help as many people as possible who are coping with injuries, pain, and/or stress by providing soft tissue therapy, which combines massage, education, and rehabilitation to help you take control of your pain or injury. I qualified as a Level 5 Soft Tissue Therapist after studying with the Institute of Sport & Remedial Massage (ISRM) at The Massage Training School in Exmouth. I have treated a wide variety of injuries, chronic pain, and musculoskeletal pain both in my clinic and for a short period prior to COVID, for the Camborne Rugby Football Club while assisting the lead physio.
