In 2014 Jenni (a mum of 3) was sitting in a coffee shop chatting with a friend when her friend’s daughter choked, being an advanced first aider, Jenni knew just what to do. She quickly stepped in and successfully removed the blockage and the little girl recovered perfectly. It was this moment that she realised then that first aid was not something regularly offered to new parents and that so many parents didn’t have basic first aid skills that could so easily save their child’s life. When researching suitable first aid training classes she found that parents were restricted to longer certified classes aimed at the corporate market who often showed frightening videos and told distressing stories. Jenni felt she wanted to educate parents in a way that made them feel happy, confident and empowered rather than terrified and intimidated. Jenni has grown her business from table top to a being multi-award winning franchise with trainers running their own successful Daisy businesses UK wide. She is considered a paediatric first aid expert. She has featured in numerous publications, has a huge celebrity parents portfolio and volunteers her time at many national charity events. Jenni says “We train thousands of parents every year and when you get that call to say a parent saved their child’s life thanks to our class, that is the most unbelievably emotional feeling. We are all so passionate about the importance of first aid and absolutely love what we do.” Daisy First Aid offers fun and fear-free first aid courses designed specifically for parents and child carers. Before living in Uttar Pradesh (UP), India, I hadn’t thought much about menstruation. I was the last one in my class to get my period and when I did, my dad bought me flowers and my mother wanted to throw me a period party. With such a body-positive family, I felt like periods were, if anything, too much in the limelight. While working for a local non-governmental organization (NGO) in UP, I surveyed hundreds of girls in rural villages to ask what they needed. What I heard over and over again was: We need information about how our bodies work, why we change during puberty, and how to care for ourselves. So I began sitting in on menstrual hygiene trainings, studying best practices from other local NGOs, and learning how to conduct my own. The overwhelming majority of women and girls with whom we spoke used mattress stuffing or dirty rags as pads and hadn’t learned about menstruation until they’d already begun bleeding. I couldn’t stop imagining how terrifying it would be to suddenly begin bleeding profusely from my genitals without understanding why it’s happening. Story after story solidified my devotion to assist these girls in knowing and loving their bodies. One girl recounted how her friend died of an infection. As a sanitary napkin, the friend used a dirty rag that had cleaned a bicycle. She was then too ashamed of her vaginal discomfort to seek medical help. I began realizing what those in this field already know: this issue requires widespread attention. And this issue requires much more than briefly supplying girls with information and sanitary napkins. If girls internalize they are inherently impure, then they’re set up for a life of devaluing their bodies. The social norms and mindsets of shame surrounding vaginas and periods have fatal and traumatic psychological consequences. I created Spreading Your Wings to help address these obstacles. No other Hindi or English comic book exists that speaks to the rural specific logistical and social challenges these girls face. The book incorporates metaphors, games, and explanations that my team and I have seen resonate with girls in our trainings. We strive to not just equip girls with accurate and relatable information, but to help them reframe the very way that they see their bodies, to transform the shame they feel into pride. This begins with the success of the amazing team at Spring Common Academy and encouragement from others within our community to increase our system leadership role and spread the reach of high quality special education provision and training. In 2014 Spring Common School developed as a Teaching School status with a National Leader in Education and in 2015 designated a national support school status. In January 2016 Spring Common School became Spring Common Academy and successfully became a Multi Academy Trust called Spring Common Academy Trust with intent to grow as a successful organisation. In June 2016 Spring Common Academy trust was selected from a national field to develop the special school project at the new Community in Cambridgeshire at Alconbury Weald. This project called Alconbury Weald education campus moved to milestone 3 which is detailed design in partnership with Cambridgeshire Local Authority, Atkins global and Morgan Sindall Construction in April 2021. It is the intention of our trustees that this new special school be named as Prestley Wood Academy. This new special school will be mixed age 3 to 19 for 150 pupils. In November 2018 Spring Common Academy was judged outstanding overall Ofsted report date 18 December 2018, building on the hard work of the staff team and trustees. During 2020 – 2021 a significant Capital build project was undertaken to improve hygiene and disability access to the building in partnership with Cambridgeshire Local Authority, Oxbury chartered surveyors and Jeakins Weir. Following a period of transition from September 2020 in January 2021 Dr Kim Taylor OBE became the full time Executive Head/ CEO for the development of the Trust and Julia McIntosh appointed as Head of School at Spring Common Academy by trustees. In April 2021 the members and trustees agree to change the name of the Trust to Horizons Education Trust with the prospect of more special schools joining the trust. In May 2021 the former TBAP Unity Academy transferred into the trust as Riverside Meadows Academy with two sites at St Neots and Wisbech as an SEMH special school. This school was judged good and report date was 3 July 2019. Between May to June 2021 emergency works identified prior to academy transfer completed on the Algores Way site at Wisbech to support the safety of staff and pupils. Significant ICT infrastructure installed on both sites to enable staff and pupils to access wireless using Eastnet supported by ICT Services with new email domains. In May 2021 The Fenland Education Campus which includes a new SEMH special school for Wisbech moved to Milestone 3 of detailed design with Cambridgeshire Local Authority Atkins Global and Kier. The site identified in Wisbech will be for 60 placement SEMH special school.
