My Journey to Coaching From that menagerie of titles you might say my journey has been unconventional. It’s quite the ‘hyphenated’ career (a rather accidental blueprint for the Millennial generation). You might think that it makes sense for ‘someone like me’ to have this choppy path - I’m outgoing, outspoken and, to some, outlandish. A typical ‘actor type’ #eyeroll... but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t been seduced into ‘taking the road more travelled’ in my time. In fact, I gave up acting and dedicated ten years to a ‘sensible’ income stream. Which saw me sit in a world where I didn’t belong and tried to fit in for ten. years. Sigh. Then two things happened, two nights in a row, that made me stop in my tracks. My niece was born. Ruby Amelia. Light of my life. And my friend died at the age of 43. Bowel cancer. It had been a brutal battle. I learned both sets of news sat at my desk at midnight in a central London architectural studio; with spreadsheets open and a half written proposal to win the most boring work imaginable. And just like that, the click happened. I chose no. Not on my watch.

Acting Now is an applied theatre company and social enterprise based in Cambridge (UK). Our goal is to transform lives through theatre. We put social, political and civic causes at the forefront of our work and devise creative drama projects that breathe life into the important social challenges facing participants and audiences alike. We are committed to bringing about change in communities and participants from all walks of life, especially those who experience disadvantage. Our core work involves the use of drama in community, health and education settings as a catalyst for personal and social change. We work with refugees, youth groups, women, homeless people and adults with learning disabilities or mental health issues, among others, using theatre to reflect, explore and analyse the issues that affect them. Our theatre projects provide a space where participants can develop self-confidence, new skills and transform their own reality. With them, we also develop high quality plays that are performed in the local community. To scale our impact we work alongside charities and local authorities and strong partnerships have been forged with a large number of community organisations (such as Rowan, Cambridge Cancer Help Centre and Wintercomfort) so as to support their service users in their future endeavours.

The Griffin Institute

The research arm of The Griffin Institute is working on two areas of potential benefit to people living with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) by creating a replacement bowel tissue for transplantation and by developing an in vitro platform for evaluating candidate drugs for the treatment of those patients who are not suitable for surgery. Our tissue engineering approach could also be used to treat other bowel diseases including reconstructive surgery after cancer removal. Approximately 50% of patients with Crohn’s disease and 20% with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) will require life-changing surgery that involves removal of part of the bowel resulting in complications with stool frequency, malnutrition and infections. As a proof of concept, we will grow stem cells on a biological inert scaffold in the laboratory to optimise the conditions for seeding the patient’s own stem cells for eventual transplantation. Use of the patients own stem cells avoids immune rejection. This proof of concept will lay the foundation for translational studies and eventual clinical trials for the management of UC and other bowel conditions in humans. We also hope that this work will lead to the development of a 3D model where the model tissue populated with healthy cells will be used to better understand the natural progression of UC for the purposes of testing interventions for early stage disease.

Whatever your background, experience, ability or fitness level, we can help you to move better and feel better (and to have fun in the process!) Whether your goals include improved mobility for everyday activities, management of current injuries, pain reduction, improved posture / balance, increased strength / flexibility, or improved sports performance at elite level, we will help you to make the best of your body. We offer group mat classes (up to 10 people on mats) and group equipment classes (up to 4 people on the Pilates apparatus - reformers, cadillacs, stability chairs, and barrels). If you prefer a more personalised approach we can teach you on a one-to-one (or two-to-one) basis, to focus more specifically on your individual needs. Corporate class are available too - we can offer short standing classes, or "Pilates at your desk" sessions, to improve productivity at work. Many people who aren't local to us enjoy attending our online classes. We run specialist Over-60s classes, as well as Chair-based classes for those with restricted mobility. We are skilled in post-operative rehabilitation / remedial Pilates, and we support numerous people with disabilities. We are experienced working with pregnant and post-natal women, and with people suffering from all kinds of different conditions such as back pain, disc issues, osteoporosis, arthritis, scoliosis, hypermobility, sciatica and other neural problems, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, joint replacement / pain, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinsons disease, high and low blood pressure, fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome (ME), cancer and various pelvic / spinal conditions. We invite movement teachers to deepen their practice with us, with weekly classes or one-off workshops. Bodywise is a Pilates teacher-training centre, running in-depth Matwork and Equipment teacher-training courses (accredited by the Pilates Foundation, the highest standard in Pilates training). All teachers at Bodywise are Pilates Foundation trained and highly creative - each with their own unique approach. The Pilates Foundation requires its members to maintain up-to-date insurance and first aid certification. PF Teachers must also commit to ongoing learning, training and practice through Continual Professional Development courses (CPD) each year. We also have a small shop on the premises selling various Pilates equipment such as mats, softballs, therabands, foam rollers, yoga blocks, spiky massage balls, non-slip socks and some clothing / books.

Loosing her mother in 2019 to cancer whilst she was carrying her first child, Emma realised that more support and simplification needed to be given around birth, choices and informed consent. She trained as a Doula with Nurturing Birth & completed her Hypnobirthing training with Best-selling author Sophie Fletcher. The Naked Doula was born and has ever since been on a mission to revolutionise birth. To create evidence based, bite size tips and information for pregnancy, birth and postpartum so that parents can feel confident and informed on their journey! The Naked Doula represents informed choice, transparency and nakedness in the REAL delivery of information. Everyone should have the opportunity to feel excited about their birth, to celebrate it in all it’s glory.
