Aikido is a modern defensive Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba, referred to by many as O’Sensei (Great Teacher). Its emphasis is placed on spherical movement to create dynamic and explosive techniques that render an attacker harmless. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury. It operates on the principle or tactic of blending with an attacker's movements for the purpose of controlling their actions with minimal effort. The Aikido practitioner does not rely on muscle strength but concentrates the power of the whole body onto the weak point of an opponent, forcing him/her to cooperate using his/her own force and momentum. This attribute defines Aikido's effectiveness and beauty as a martial art. Several approaches to Aikido have evolved over the years. Today Aikido is found all over the world in a number of styles, with broad ranges of interpretation and emphasis. However, the core essential principles of the martial art remain consistent. WHY PRACTISE AIKIDO? Aikido is more than simply an efficient method of self-defense. In practice, there are various facets of Aikido - the power of focus and concentration of energy; the concept of blending and unified non-resistance; the awareness of self and others. Traditionally, Aikido is a form of Budo – a “martial way”. Unlike other arts, Aikido technique can be applied at varying levels of severity, from the most gentle controlling techniques to the most severe countermeasures. One question that people who practise Aikido are often asked is why they do it. Thanks for finding me here. I’m a self-experimenting author, speaker and wellness advocate, but it wasn’t always that way… On October 1st 2012 I sat in a hospital waiting room staring at a white notice board. When I’d arrived, the letters had been visible, but over time they’d started to fade. Punctuation marks dissolved, as if wiped off by a zealous cleaner. Every blink washed away more of my sight. Within 72 hours I was blind and paralysis had snaked up my body, leaving numbness in its wake. Losing two of my senses was terrifying and I didn’t know if I’d see my children again. For a while I lost connection with the outer world and my future was uncertain. Slowly my visual system rebooted, but the world didn’t look like it should. Grey wispy shapes swirled and eerie lines jiggled on the horizon. None of it made any sense. Over time I listened to the more subtle cues my body transmitted and learnt new ways to adapt. Months later when I started to feel, rather than see, the colour red and when blue objects fizzed and spat like a lit sparkler, my curiosity was ignited. I set out on a mission to better understand the incredible resilience and healing power of my mind. It was a journey that led to collaborations with scientists, my first book, Patient H69: The Story of my Second Sight, a TEDx talk and then a second book, Finding My Right Mind: One Woman’s Experiment to put Meditation to the Test. Nature played a huge part in my year-long recovery, so in 2021 I co-founded ParkBathe, a citizen science, green health initiative in collaboration with Derby University. The project encourages people who are wellness sceptics to experience a 1-hour version of forest bathing in urban parks and is funded by the National Lottery. Forest bathing is simply walking mindfully in nature while absorbing the woodland atmosphere via the senses. As the project is part of a research study, walkers are invited to wear heartrate (HRV) monitors which record their stress levels before and after each session. Jackie and Terry Lawer run Capable Canines Cornwall. Terry has a fantastic wealth of knowledge in all things canine, having been involved in dog training for over thirty years. He and Jackie own three Border Collies and a Miniature American Shepherd. Jackie deals with all matters to do with running the business and its administration. She is an Agility Club Approved Instructor, as well as being a qualified teacher, who has taught in Secondary and Adult Education. Jackie currently competes with one of her collies in agility. Tarn is Grade 7: the highest grade achievable in UK. Tarn has competed at two UKA National Finals and Jackie has also competed at a KC ABC (anything but a collie) National Final with her crossbreed, Zeus, many years ago now! She is also bringing on a youngster, due to start competing in Grade 2 shortly. Terry competes with Exe in Grade 4. Both Jackie and Terry have been Agility Judges. Jackie is also a Scentwork UK Judge and Trial Manager, currently working Tarn at Level 5 and Dart at Level 2 in this discipline. Arena We are lucky enough to have the use of an excellent training venue in Shortlanesend. Access is really easy and only takes a few minutes from Truro in the south or the A30 in the north. The venue offers hard-standing for parking and a really large outdoor school. We are told it is 25 x 45 m but it seems even bigger! The surface is a sand and felt mix and stands up very well to all types of weather! Danny Lai is from Taichung, Taiwan. There, he learned many different kinds of martial arts, including Tai Chi, Hsing-Yi, Ba Gua, Tae Kwon Do and Shaolin. Tai Chi Punch Although each style of Tai Chi Chuan has its peculiar features, the five styles of Tai Chi Chuan something in common, they are: With a calm mind the performer breathes naturally. In peace and ease the performer moves lightly, softly, slowly and equally. The performer moves harmoniously and in a balanced way. The performer moves like a circle–graceful and perfect. The motion is slow and steady and strong strength (yang) and weak strength (yin) can be used in motions mutually. Tai Chi Chuan has attracted attention internationally. It has special functions in promoting health and preventing illness. To help the performer to concentrate their mind and to make their motions coordinate with their breath, music can be played to accompany practice. Flow with the sound of the musical instruments. In following the rhythms of the music, practicing Tai Chi Chuan will relieve stress and benefit health. Crescent Kick (Shuang Pai Chiao) The name Tai Chi comes from the Taoist symbol the West calls yin (black) and yang (white). This Tai Chi symbol represents two balanced opposites: black and white, sky and earth, fire and water, masculine and feminine, moon and sun. Feminine is the black or yin. Masculine is light or yang. The yin side of Tai Chi is like yoga, moving meditation, or chi kung. The yang side is the martial art – the practical application of the movements – using your power. Most often the yang side of Tai Chi is not taught. The healing benefits without the martial application is the yin without the yang. Through the movements of Tai Chi, one can set the mind and body in balance. It is not easy to do. You want to make sure that for every movement in motion (yang) or at rest (yin) your body is moving together. Through Tai Chi training, you can learn more about yourself and you can feel calm and peaceful all the time. It is a kind of martial art, but it is a gentle martial art. It is not for attacking, but has powerful self-defense applications.

WE TEACH. Since January 2014, ReadAble has been running weekly reading and language arts classes for children ages 2 to 15 in a neighbourhood in the Chin Swee area. We started out teaching in children’s homes, but have grown to occupy classrooms in the Residents’ Committee Centre. We teach a phonics-based curriculum to our earliest readers and deliver a programme which complements the primary school syllabus for those who have mastered the basics of reading. We use drama, movement and play to draw out a love for reading, build self-confidence, and encourage creativity. WE BUILD. ReadAble has built a community library of over a thousand books for our kids to freely access books at every reading level throughout the week. We also organise educational excursions to plays and museums, as well as connect kids’ families with community resources, such as school supply donations and workshops by professional educators. Through our BookDrop project, we set up conducive study spaces and mini-libraries in kids’ homes. WE MENTOR. Apart from our classes every Saturday, some volunteers run one-on-one classes with children in their homes across the week forming deep relationships with families. We also started a class teaching the predominantly migrant mothers of our students, functional English to navigate life in Singapore. EVERY CHILD LOVED. We believe that children thrive in love. We are committed to forming lasting relationships with them as teachers and mentors. Each child’s progress is closely monitored and classes are tailored to meet their learning styles. We recognise that our children weather challenges such as parental incarceration or family violence, and we strive to support them. EVERY FAMILY PARTNERED. Family support is crucial to a child’s success. We work alongside families to reinforce children's learning at home. We seek to understand our children’s home life and we engage parents with routine updates on their children’s progress. EVERY VOLUNTEER EMPOWERED. ReadAble is entirely volunteer-led and run, and we are serious about equipping our people. We run regular training sessions on topics from phonics to classroom management and how toxic stress affects child development. We constantly refine our methods based on research and best practices. EVERYONE A COMMUNITY. We seek to build an inclusive community that encourages children's diverse aspirations and engages everyone with empathy. We have a flat volunteer structure led by our Co-founders and Core Team who form friendships with children and their families. Together, we work to eradicate social inequality.

Hope is a belief that something will change for the better. This remains a solid mandate, and many people over the years can testify that their lives have changed when having the opportunity to be with horses. We look after horses, who through no fault of their own, require specialist care and attention. These include foals fostered from the Friends of the Dartmoor Hill Ponies Society. People who attend NLHCS with a range of mental and physical health issues, find comfort in the presence of these foals, who in turn benefit from being handled and loved. We provide art on prescription schemes at the sanctuary where people are welcome to participate in weekly workshops. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.These schemes enable those experiencing declining physical ability, chronic pain, carer stress, anxiety, depression and bereavement the opportunity to be involved in the arts. (see Art for Health and Wellbeing). New Life Horse Care Sanctuary achieved charity status in 2014 (Reg no. 1165384), and all donations are gratefully received. We have a new group ART2HEART Stronger Together for people who for whatever reason cannot attend the Sanctuary, those who are shielding, self isolating etc who can post their art work and receive tuition by phone, messenger and WhatsApp. We are also providing tuition for those who want to send artwork in the post. It took a long time for the herd to settle after the death of Patriarch Obe, however Fleur stepped into his shoes and is now the lead mare. Surprisingly Mattie and Fleur have become friends and Mattie has got used to being without his sparring partner. So much so, that Elsa was very much on her own and therefore we have recently adopted another small pony from Cornwall. Tinkerbell arrived a couple of weeks ago, she is a 3 year old Dartmoor Hilly and has quickly found her place A number of people have attended the Way of The Horse sessions with trainer Heather Seems and have been able to observe first hand how an ex racehorse is rehabilitated. Fleur is changing week by week as she overcomes her anxiety and coping habits. She is very quiet and loving. An exclusive and independent rehab centre for the treatment of addictions and associated mental health issues The Haynes Clinic is a private rehabilitation centre for the treatment of alcohol, gambling and drug addiction. Drug addiction encompasses all so-called ‘recreational’ drugs (cocaine, ketamin, GBL, GHB, heroin and cannabis, for example). It also includes prescription medication for those with concerns about their use of drugs such as codeine, diazepam and other benzodiazepines, pregabalin, gabapentin and sleeping tablets. The centre provides detox and counselling with a view to you becoming entirely abstinent from alcohol and drugs. The counselling will also cover how to deal with stress, anxiety and depression – feelings that are often associated with addiction and other compulsive behaviours. Most of the rehab treatment is focused around group therapy as this has been proven to be most effective in helping addicts and alcoholics into recovery. There will also be some one to one counselling to cover individual goals and anything of particular sensitivity. All clients at The Haynes Clinic will have a consultation with our consultant psychiatrist on admission. She will prescribe any detox medication required and oversee your medical needs during your stay. Your stay here can be entirely private without it being revealed to your own GP and being on your medical notes – or we can liaise with your GP if you prefer. If we need to be in touch with your GP – or any other professional outside the confines of the treatment centre – this will always be with your consent. We also involve your family and those closest to you in your treatment. We ask the people who care about you to tell us about your behaviour and how it has affected them. We also offer them family counselling if they need support as a result of your addiction. The treatment centre is located in a tranquil, rural setting in Bedfordshire. We aim to make your stay as comfortable as possible while getting you well. All clients at the centre have their own bedrooms in a home comfort setting. Some have en suite facilities. All are good sized well appointed rooms with a double bed. We take account of your choices when ordering in the food for your stay though once you are feeling physically better, your rehab experience will include taking on responsibilities such as helping to prepare meals and keeping your environment clean and tidy. Some people need to relearn these skills; others can share their experience, helping their peers to learn – which itself boosts self-esteem.
