BORN TO SWIM is a small swimming school established for 16 years. We have taught thousands of babies and children throughout the London area with amazing results. As we like to say, we teach from crib to competition. We are passionate about what we do and as well as teaching we wish to inspire our swimmers. From our baby and toddler classes, to our children’s lessons and our bespoke one-to-one sessions you can see the differences between BORN TO SWIM members to babies and children taught elsewhere. We have little ones as young as 3 years old swimming 10 metres. Okay, it may not be the national recognised stroke at this point, but it is definitely not doggy paddle. We NEVER ever teach doggy paddle or use armbands. Our teachers are enthusiastic about our approach and are all trained in the BORN TO SWIM building block methodology. They love what they do. They love children and have bags of patience and understanding little ones needs. They are energetic, build confidence, give support and tons of encouragement. Our teachers make swimming lessons fun whist learning, creating a conducive learning environment. I am never happier than when sharing my love of spinning and all things woolly. My forte is long draw spinning, although I teach all methods. I was professionally taught in 1980s and have never stopped learning and sharing my skills ever since. My new book 'Hand spinning - essential technical and creative skills', is the only one in the world that explains long draw spinning at length and in easily accessible detail. It’s fun, fast, satisfying, and the way spinning used to be done before industrial production took over. Hand spinning is not about mimicking commercial yarn; it is about creating your own unique, signature, yarn. Yarn that is fit for the purpose and bears the name of the person who made it. Yarn made in your choice of fibre, using your chosen spinning method, in colours and textures that will put joy into your life. And that is only the beginning... further joys of knitting, weaving or decoration await. However, there is no reason why spinners can't just hang up their yarn for the pure pleasure of seeing it. Unlike a framed painting though, you do more than look at yarn to admire it. You need to touch it, grasp it, dig your fingers in, smell it, feel the sensuous warmth against your face.... As I say, hand spinning transcends the commonplace - my aim is to help and inspire people to discover this for themselves. In her 91st year Beth Chatto set up the Education Trust to develop educational opportunities through The Garden for everyone. The aim of the Trust is to inspire, educate, and to promote enjoyment and wellbeing for all through gardens and the outdoor environment. Established in 2015 Beth Chatto Education Trust has developed a varied annual programme of courses, workshops, projects and activities for adults, children and community groups. The programme consists of firm favourites that are retained each year and new courses that keep the programme current and interesting. There is something to suit everyone whether you are an experienced horticulturalist or a novice keen to try your hand at something new. We offer RHS Theory qualifications, practical gardening courses, one-day creative workshops, lectures, school visits, Forest school and children’s holiday garden activities. These can run for a morning, a day, termly or up to two years for the RHS qualifications. The Beth Chatto Education Trust aims to facilitate people to access the outdoors, enjoy learning in our gardens and connect with the environment to enhance wellbeing. Many of our courses are based in the Beth Chatto Gardens in our purpose-built education building, the 'Willow Room'. In addition to the formal gardens, we also have a separate ‘wild garden’ which we use with children and for hands-on practical learning. Courses and events can be found and booked on our website. It was the possibility of creating Art for everyday that inspired me in the beginning. Art in its broadest sense, is the expressions of human imagination and skill and I believe it can make a big difference to everyday life. It can inspire us, give us an outlet from our daily routines and boost our happiness levels. And yet we tend to think of it as something to be saved for special occasions, or enjoyed from a distance, behind glass. My own wedding china for example, spent most of its life in a cupboard gathering dust – and I think that is really where it all began. I wanted to create everyday things that were both beautiful and robust enough to be part of everyday life at home. I was almost fifty by then, and increasingly aware that time was running out. The delightful small factory we found in Stoke quickly ran out of capacity and even with a second factory, we quickly ran out of capacity. By happenstance, we were introduced to a ceramic factory in Sri Lanka, where traditional studio skills have been preserved. Even then, we spent a full year working on techniques before we were able to start production in earnest. That year, I made eight two-week trips and seemed to be rarely out of an airport. During one such trip, I stopped off for a few days in Southern India to visit a textile factory, with an idea of developing some table linens. And in this way, our product range began to grow…
