London

The Giles Foreman Centre for Acting is a dynamic professional acting studio based in Soho, in the heart of London; together with GFCA International Centres in Europe and USA. We are the leading Centre for Character Analysis. We provide distinctive, enjoyably rigorous and person-centred training for aspiring individuals and professional actors – taught by some of the leading acting, movement, voice, analysis, improvisation and camera-technique coaches available. If you choose to come to GFCA, we provide many ways to participate; regular part-time acting classes; short intensive workshops; one-to-one coaching; and 2-, 3- and 4-term full-time courses. Since March 2020 we have also embraced a wider, global community through online training, particularly in Character Analysis, Movement Psychology and advanced scene-study with Giles Foreman. People new to acting can discover the skills through our beginners’ classes and workshops, progressing onward part-time; or take our Foundation Acting ATCL Diploma over 3 terms (Saturday, and evening route). Those who think they may be ready – you may have have previous acting or performing experience, have studied at University, or come via other routes – audition for our 4-term 16-month advanced intensive Acting Diploma (Post-Graduate equivalent-level). Ours is amongst the most affordable courses of its kind in the country, and yet it is built around intensive teaching by renowned coaches, with small class sizes designed to develop people as thoroughly as possible. It is vigorous, focussed, demanding; based on a huge tradition, producing actors with skills tailored for the modern film, TV and theatre industries. Pro weekend session Professional actors come to develop their skills through acting classes and workshops with top practitioners from all over the world – and to create projects in both film and theatre. Actors can use studio coaches and facilities to prepare for auditions, and to develop in-depth characters for film roles that they have already secured. Alongside actor-training, GFCA offers casting and coaching-services, and scriptwriting development to the film industry. Due to our location in Soho, centre of the UK media industries, GFCA also offers many opportunities to meet casting directors, directors and producers through regular events; plays, showcases, castings, play-readings and Industry events. The acting philosophy at the studio was developed from that of the original Drama Centre London under Christopher Fettes, Yat Malmgren and Reuven Adiv, who together trained some of the leading UK actors of recent years – from Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Simon Callow, Geraldine James, Frances de la Tour – to Helen McCrory, Anne Marie Duff, Paul Bettany, Tara Fitzgerald, Lambert Wilson, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, Santiago Cabrera, Gwendoline Christie, Ryan Gage and John Simm, to name but a few. Christopher Fettes, founder of Drama Centre London, holds the title of tutor-emeritus for our studio. The teaching process utilises a system of methods within Realism. We are one of the very few centres in the world providing detailed training courses in the extraordinary Laban/Jungian technique of Character Analysis / Movement Psychology developed by Yat Malmgren, to develop people’s psychological understanding both of themselves and the characters they are playing. Our holistic acting education is influenced by Stanislavski, as well as the philosophy of Lee Strasberg, Uta Hagen, Stella Adler and Sanford Meisner, creating actors capable of sophisticated, transformative performance. The Centre has relationships with other similar organisations around the world and offers many exchange programmes. In 2015 we opened our sister centre, GFCA Paris, joining GFCA International bases in other cities such as New York & LA; GFCA Luxembourg, and GFCA Zürich We have substantial expertise in delivering Corporate training both in the UK and abroad. We have also established a publishing arm, launching the book A Peopled Labyrinth written by Drama Centre founder Christopher Fettes in September 2015. Character Analysis - THE Book Character Analysis – THE Book Additionally we provide space for room-hire, casting facilities and rehearsal-space for individuals and organisations. Our premises are bright, clean and air-conditioned. We employ HEPA-filtered air-purifiers in our studios.

Dr Cathy McQuaid

dr cathy mcquaid

With over 25 years’ experience as a therapist and 35 working within the helping professions, I know counselling and psychotherapy works. During this time I have offered counselling and psychotherapy for individuals and couples, using a combination of the person-centred approach with Transactional Analysis and psychodynamic theoretical models. I believe the client themselves holds the answers to their questions. What I provided was warmth, compassion, respect and a safe space in which they can tell their story: a willingness to share the therapeutic journey and to help them to reach the goals they set. The approaches I used can help the client understand the history of their difficulties, and offer a way forward in terms of restructuring or realigning their perceptions of life, helping them rediscover their drive towards wholeness and health. Although I no longer offer counselling or psychotherapy to clients I bring all my knowledge, skills and experience into my work as a workshop presenter, supervisor and trainer. My focus now is on offering online supervision, undertaking research, continuing to write on topics and run workshops on topics that interest me. I offer training to trainers, both face to face and online. As a supervisor I offer supervision to qualified counsellors and psychotherapists, something I have done since 2002. Supervision can be undertaken individually or in small groups. In addition I am endorsed to teach and supervise Transactional Analysis by the European Association for Transactional Analysis, this means I can teach and supervise supervisors and trainers. As a supervisor of trainers I come with experience of setting up and running a training and therapy centre, of gaining MSc recogition for my courses and running a low cost therapy centre. I know how challenging it can be to meet the many and varied national and international requirements; maintaining personal idiosyncratic preferences; whilst adhering to academic norms; set core competencies; and external organisational requirements that, at times, appear to conflict with one another. As a researcher my most recent project concerned the impact of the death of a child, of any age, on parents and siblings. This has resulted in May 2021 to my second book Understanding Bereaved Parents and Siblings: A Handbook for Professionals, Family and Friends. I run workshops for professionals who want a greater understanding of how they can work with bereaved mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. Workshops are planned for bereaved parents and siblings later in 2022. In addition I have a specific interest in training courses and training standards. Having completed my DPsych in 2010 and written my first book What You Really Need to Know About Counselling and Psychotherapy Training: An Essential Guide published by Routledge in 2014, I have gone on to continue my research into counselling and psychotherapy training from both the trainees and trainers perspectives. I am passionate about training and training standards and want to work with others who wish to work to the best of their ability with integrity, passion and trustworthiness. If you have any questions, or would like to make an appointment, please email me via this link or call me on 07428 551163 between 10am and 5pm. I do not interrupt sessions to answer the phone, but there is a confidential answering machine; please leave your name, number and any message, and I will call you back.

HOPE Bereavement Support Group CIC

hope bereavement support group cic

HOPE Bereavement Support began in 2013 when the visionary and founder, Ansa, realised that there needed to be a place of safety and inclusion for all mothers who had sadly lost a baby to miscarriage, stillbirth or at any other stage of their child’s life. What was sorely needed was an accessible place where everyone would be able to find comfort and support for their loss; not feel alone or ostracised. She had a vision where everybody – regardless of age, sex, religion, ethnicity or any other difference – had the ability to access mental health and emotional support for their loss. Ansa’s ambition came from a painful journey; she is the proud mother of 9 rainbow children. Her determination to succeed grew after she struggled to find a suitable support group after her losses. During her healing process she became more empowered and went back to study, changing her career path to become a qualified and registered counsellor and Training Consultant. There was at that time very limited multi-lingual counselling services available, and furthermore, it was very expensive and the clinical models applied did not feel culturally diverse or sensitive to BME therapeutic needs. HOPE Bereavement Support initially started with three trustees (the founder, a secretary and a treasurer) as a small constituted community group in Leeds, setting up bereavement support groups run by befrienders and volunteers for women and families to meet after suffering the loss of a child. Over 7 years on, the organisation is now running support services in Leeds, Bradford and London and specialises in all types of bereavement. We have a team of over 30 people consisting of qualified counsellors, coaches, an occupational therapist, clinical supervisors and many befrienders and volunteers. All staff members are based nationally in different parts of the UK working together remotely. Our services: Counselling Coaching Bereavement support groups Mental health and emotional wellbeing resilience workshops Educational and awareness building workshops Training and consultancy Research Media We also have service delivery partnership projects with Touchstone Staff Counselling and Touchstone ‘Blossom’ (Female Genital Mutilation) counselling: https://touchstonesupport.org.uk/ Our CEO Ansa E Ahmed has been nominated for the Positive Role Model (Race, Faith and Religion) Award at the National Diversity Awards 2021 “I was overwhelmed by receiving this nomination for the award, however, I feel and I believe that my HOPE team and organisation are well-deserved of this nomination and that this will be the first of many to come because we are a blackled organisation aiming to fulfil the short-comings in our national services in providing better health outcomes for our black communities nationwide. As the founder and CEO of HOPE services I feel very proud and overwhelmed with how much support, passion and dedication I have found in the people who have joined my organisation. When speaking and networking with other third sector and national organisations and their leaders, I was gratefully humbled for the respect given to our organisation in terms of what HOPE has to offer in fulfilling the need of our BAME communities access to mental health services in their own languages, and with our culturally inclusive person-centred approach towards each individual who accesses our services. Furthermore, I do not believe there is any other organisation that has achieved what we have in a short time as a Community Interest Company (CIC). This again is a testimony to the great BAME leaders from my board of directors, managers, supervisors and clinical practitioners that for me as a black leader I am proud to have alongside me as a driving force for HOPE. It feels like a lifetime ago when my career changed from the corporate field of working in the banking industry for 15 years of my life, I was able with my initiative and work ethic dedication to move up the management ladder to a customer service focused area manager role. So, therefore leading, motivating, coaching others from a leadership role comes very natural to me in my skill set as a CEO, but what really drives me is the passion and belief in compassion for all of humanity and this makes my job as CEO of HOPE very rewarding. From a personal development aspect I feel a winner as I am not only helping and giving back to my communities in the services that we provide in HOPE but also that I am helping my fellow BAME professionals nationwide who choose to join HOPE in their journey and development in furthering their career as BAME leaders within their respective fields of works. It has always been my mission statement as an individual and now as the head of the HOPE organisation that where possible I want to fight against stigma, shame, prejudice and racism in all its forms always with a heart full of compassion, love for humanity and kindness for all. I believe that true leadership is leading by example but also alongside helping your aspiring leaders. Your vote for me and HOPE would mean so much to us all, thank you 🙂 ”

What do we mean by Person Centred Care, well the term originated in the 1940s and proposed taking a holistic view of service users in care settings. This means getting to know the person and then tailoring their care as much as possible to meet their specific needs. Person centred care is now a key principle outlined in current legislation and it plays an important part in the standards that they set out which must be followed by all care professionals working in this country. This course will give you an understanding of person centred approaches for care and support, and how to implement a person-centred approach in an adult social care setting. It starts by explaining what we mean by person centred care and where this term originated. It then goes on to analyse the values represented by person centred care and explains why care should be as much as possible tailored to each service user. Finally it will give you an overview of care plans, daily reports, the importance of obtaining consent and much more.
