Mick has been doing tai chi for eight years, in that time he has gained much knowledge both internal and external, with very respected teachers. He met his first teacher, Ann Gathercole, under the Longfei Taijiquan Association of Great Britain, she teaches the Yang Style short form, also Chen Style Tai Chi under the Lineage of Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang. He then, after a break away from Tai Chi, found Penang Tai Chi Association who taught the Chen Man Ching Yang 37 step form under teachers Matt & Molly O’Malley but after some thought he decided that he wanted to pursue the Chen Style & found Sifu Clive Spring, who at the time had been teaching for over 35 years in different styles of martial arts, including Chen Style Tai Chi, but after much consideration he wanted to find his first teacher Ann Gathercole again with whom he had been back training with for the last 6 years & has been lucky enough to have also trained with some highly respected teachers along the way. Mick has trained with Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang, Master Chen Bing & Master Chen Yingjun at seminars. Also he has trained with Phil Muil & Emma Westlake who are highly respected teachers who teach the Chen Style & Short Yang Style form at Oxford Chen Bing Taiji Academy. Mick has learned different hand forms and weapons. He has also learned many Qigong forms.

I’ve worked for more than 30 years delivering and managing services in the public sector to support disabled people. In 1997 I moved into higher education becoming the manager of the disability service at the University of the West of England in Bristol. After UWE, I was the manager of an educational development project in Manchester before two roles in national coordination teams. As part of the National Disability Team I oversaw £2.1m of HEFCE funding across 23 projects in a range of HEIs in England. The projects were funded to set up disability provision from scratch within small specialist institutions and to develop a range of inclusive teaching, learning and assessment resources for the sector. I was then senior policy adviser at Action on Access, the national coordination team for widening participation. I’ve worked in a consultancy capacity and been a member of policy groups for a range of projects and organisations including, the Institute of Physics, the Higher Education Academy, the General Teaching Council for England, the Quality Assurance Agency, and a number of universities including York, Durham, Huddersfield, Middlesex and Cardiff Metropolitan. I was a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Disability Practitioners for a number of years and I’m now the CEO of the International Network of Inclusive Practice. I recently worked as a visiting lecturer at the Education University, Hong Kong and currently work as a lecturer at London South Bank University.

With qualifications including MSc in S&C and British weightlifting level 1, my journey in fitness has not been via a so-called “normal” path. While I have always been involved in sport from a young age – being part of a football academy throughout my childhood and also playing semi-professional football as a teenager and into my adult years – it was a back injury that put me on the path I’m walking today. After various injections and finally a pretty big operation on my back, I found myself desperate to get back into shape. During this process I made the decision to quit my full time job as an admin assistant manager and study for my MSc in Strength and Conditioning – a decision which ultimately led me to where I am today. Many people will call me a personal trainer (PT) but I see myself more as a coach. I’m here to help coach people into making better lifestyle choices with regards to food, training and general lifestyle choices. I’m also here to educate my clients on how best to work out and explain the benefits all of these better choices make. Your fitness journey doesn’t have to be three killer workouts followed by chicken and broccoli every day. Nor is it my mission to push you so far in the gym that you’re throwing up. My job is to show you how you can enjoy your journey and more importantly sustain the changes you’ve made.
