Who Are We & Where Have We Come From? We created Tagtiv8 in 2012. Why? As teachers and school leaders, we love to learn. However, we hate sitting down for long periods of time. Sadly, many schools focus only on English and Mathematics – with certain subjects put to one side. In some schools, subjects are taught in boxes – we believe that this is not how we learn best. Our mission is simple – to create educational resources and training that develop confidence in key areas of the curriculum through physical activity. How Did We Get Here? We taught in various UK schools for 25 years. However, we were becoming increasingly worried that certain agencies – driven by data – were putting undue pressure on teachers and learners through academic accountability and over-testing. Alison Philipson worked in advertising for several years before training to be a teacher, which she enjoyed for a decade, becoming the English Leader in the school and also a leading Literacy Teacher in Bradford. Following this, for several years, she led the local authority’s Literacy Team and then took on the role of KS1 and KS2 Assessment Lead before setting up her own business, Alison Philipson Literacy Ltd. She is currently a KS1 and KS2 moderator for the LA and a Deputy Team Standardisation Leader for The Standards & Testing Agency, offering bespoke moderation training for both teachers and leaders from Year 1 to Year 6. Other training topics include planning and assessing from the new curriculum – reading, writing, grammar, punctuation, spelling and phonics – and training in pedagogies such as quality first teaching, modelled/shared/guided writing and whole class reading skills lessons. Giving is part of the fabric of our community at TSP and what makes our school so special. Our staff give their time and expertise to create a memorable education for our children, and the children give so much energy and enthusiasm to their work. We would also like to invite members of the wider TSP community to give time, talent or treasure, however they can, in support of our school to make a direct difference to our children’s lives. Recent projects that have been supported / funded include: · Contributing to the refurbishment of the Hall through purchasing a new projector and speakers · Improving year 3 and 4 classrooms · Sourcing new ICT equipment · Extra workshops to further enhance the school’s curriculum The school’s current focus is on: · enhancing the Year 1 playground area. This small, contained area is very tired and in need of some improvements to create a stimulating, engaging space for play. Your contributions will make a difference every day for the children who pass through year 1 each year. · improving the Key Stage 1 playground which is a thoroughfare for the school and is also used as the play area for Clubhouse, our wrap around care service. · Following the refurbishment of the school hall which has improved central space for the children to use throughout the day, to now also upgrade the sound and lighting equipment which would further enhance our school performances and workshops. We aim to raise a minimum of £5,000 each academic year to support projects such as these – the more we can raise, the sooner our children can benefit. The C2C Teaching Alliance was formed in March 2013 and is a Multi-Alliance teaching school committed to providing excellent teaching and learning opportunities for all. We have successfully developed ITT enabling School Direct students to work within the Alliance. We are also an appropriate body for NQT’s offering quality support and training for NQTs across Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire. Furthermore, we have developed the school to school support that we offer and are engaged in supporting a number of schools and have a good track record of the impact of that support. We also offer a wide range of CPD, including English, Maths, PE, Phonics and Senior leaders. Our most recent addition to this is training for recently Qualified Teachers showing leadership potential. Our objective is to build a professional school led system based on trust and empowerment. We aim for excellence in holistic education; providing an outstanding teacher for every class and outstanding leaders in every school. WE TEACH. Since January 2014, ReadAble has been running weekly reading and language arts classes for children ages 2 to 15 in a neighbourhood in the Chin Swee area. We started out teaching in children’s homes, but have grown to occupy classrooms in the Residents’ Committee Centre. We teach a phonics-based curriculum to our earliest readers and deliver a programme which complements the primary school syllabus for those who have mastered the basics of reading. We use drama, movement and play to draw out a love for reading, build self-confidence, and encourage creativity. WE BUILD. ReadAble has built a community library of over a thousand books for our kids to freely access books at every reading level throughout the week. We also organise educational excursions to plays and museums, as well as connect kids’ families with community resources, such as school supply donations and workshops by professional educators. Through our BookDrop project, we set up conducive study spaces and mini-libraries in kids’ homes. WE MENTOR. Apart from our classes every Saturday, some volunteers run one-on-one classes with children in their homes across the week forming deep relationships with families. We also started a class teaching the predominantly migrant mothers of our students, functional English to navigate life in Singapore. EVERY CHILD LOVED. We believe that children thrive in love. We are committed to forming lasting relationships with them as teachers and mentors. Each child’s progress is closely monitored and classes are tailored to meet their learning styles. We recognise that our children weather challenges such as parental incarceration or family violence, and we strive to support them. EVERY FAMILY PARTNERED. Family support is crucial to a child’s success. We work alongside families to reinforce children's learning at home. We seek to understand our children’s home life and we engage parents with routine updates on their children’s progress. EVERY VOLUNTEER EMPOWERED. ReadAble is entirely volunteer-led and run, and we are serious about equipping our people. We run regular training sessions on topics from phonics to classroom management and how toxic stress affects child development. We constantly refine our methods based on research and best practices. EVERYONE A COMMUNITY. We seek to build an inclusive community that encourages children's diverse aspirations and engages everyone with empathy. We have a flat volunteer structure led by our Co-founders and Core Team who form friendships with children and their families. Together, we work to eradicate social inequality.
