At the end of my Law and Business degree, I worked as a Mentor on the National Citizen Service (NCS) for their summer programme. I supported and coached a group of young people, through a programme of personal and social development, which culminated in a social action project in their local area. This programme consisted of team-building activities at an outdoor activity centre and skills development week at a University. For social action, my group carried out a project in their local community, providing a positive impact. Although NCS encompasses social impact, I wasn’t aware of social enterprise at the time. I didn’t even realise that the NCS provider I was working for, The Education Business Partnership (EBP), was a social enterprise themselves. It was only during the following year that I realised EBP were a social enterprise. I worked for them on NCS as a mentor across 13 different programmes over the years. 2013 – Elephant Branded It was during my Masters that I came across Elephant Branded, the first social enterprise I actually knew about! I had an interest in ‘good business’ and it was whilst I was watching ‘Be your own Boss’ on BBC3 that I discovered Elephant Branded. They make these amazing products out of recycled material, which in turn funds school kits in Africa and Asia. They also support the communities who make these products. I researched them online and discovered they had a student rep program. This is where the journey began. I started doing events on campus such as talks, lectures, pop-up stands, promoting Elephant Branded online and offline. This caught the eye of James Boon, Elephant Branded’s founder who offered me further opportunities across the country. Opening doors to lectures, talks, workshops and events in places such as Nottingham, Boston, Cardiff, Surrey and London. I really enjoyed what I was doing. I was able to meet many other social enterprises at events and learn more about social business. I gained new contacts, new skills and newfound confidence. Working For Other Social Enterprises Elephant Branded got the ball rolling. Other social enterprises were seeing what I was doing which led to me promoting them. I started working for GiveMeTap and LSTN Sound Co in addition to Elephant Branded. The skills I obtained with Elephant Branded were transferred to my newly appointed roles. I was offered a unique opportunity to represent all three social enterprises on the NCS programme, which I had previously mentored on. I delivered the Business Challenge on NCS across the East Midlands and Yorkshire, representing Elephant Branded, GiveMeTap and LSTN. It was The Apprentice meets Social Enterprise meets NCS. I had great fun promoting social enterprise to the young people on NCS. The challenge encouraged them to think about social enterprise ideas in their local areas and pitching new business ideas. During Global Entrepreneurship Week, again I represented all three social enterprises at an event hosted by Enterprise Zone and UnLtd at Boston College, celebrating social enterprise, Go Social. It was at this event I met people from UnLtd and discovered they funded social enterprises. I looked into this and eventually pitched for both pre-start-up funding and start-up funding. In between, I also successfully pitched for start-up funding from my University in Lincoln, leading to the next piece of the puzzle, setting up The Socent Connection.

James’ skills and experience as a MD include accompanying rehearsals, sight reading (especially for auditions), leading vocal warm ups and workshops, playing keys in orchestra pits, conducting ensembles, Keyboard and Mainstage programming, creating arrangements and composing award winning music. Oxford BSAC Scuba Diving Club is the award-winning Oxford Branch of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC). The branch was founded in 1956 – a few years after the BSAC itself, making it one of the oldest diving clubs formed in the UK. As you might imagine we have a rich history and some very experienced members. Our club is run entirely by volunteers. We train people to dive and snorkel but we also welcome qualified divers to join us (whoever they trained with). We organise regular diving trips to Dorset and inland sites. We run several trips a year to longer-range destinations – in the recent past, these have included the Red Sea, Gozo (Malta), Scapa Flow, Sound of Mull, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly. We also have close relationships with other local BSAC branches including the Oxford University Underwater Exploration Group (OUUEG) with whom we often collaborate. The activities of the branch centre around three areas, the clubhouse, pool training and diving. We also carry a decent level of equipment and have a great hard boat moored in Weymouth – all of which help to make us a successful dive club which has been going for over 60 years. We are a mature club with a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere. The branch has around 70 members from the Oxford area stretching from Bicester in the North to Didcot in the South and from Witney in the West to Aylesbury in the East. We even have some members who live here during the week and go home on weekends. We cover a good cross-section of Oxford society. Ages range from young children who snorkel to senior citizens that dive or who are social members. We are always happy to welcome new members, be they untrained novices, experienced divers or instructors – no matter who they have trained with. Mindfulness Connected Learning delivers mindfulness courses, events and workshops to organisations, schools communities, young offenders, parents and families. Veronica is a qualified teacher with over 25 years’ teaching experience. She has taught a variety of ages and groups of children and young adults both within mainstream and special education, including children with severe learning difficulties and with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Her motivation in teaching mindfulness is to create a space where people feel safe and valued and where they can explore and experience the benefits of mindfulness practices in a relaxed and comfortable setting. She is committed to teaching children and adults how to integrate mindfulness into everyday life. Hi and welcome. I handcraft simple wooden spoons, bowls and pots for everyday use using age-old traditional tools and techniques. I sell my wooden ware at artisan crafts markets and I teach to small groups or on a one to one basis. I also work on a commission basis so there's always plenty to do. My interest in working with wood started in 1998 when I studied violin making at London Guildhall University for three years. I later went on to work with an antique furniture restorer near High Wycombe. While I learned a lot from both these experiences, it was not until I discovered the joy and creative freedom of working with green wood that a little voice in my head quietly said, ‘this is it!’. The bowls I sell are turned on a treadle lathe/pole lathe; an archaic machine, simple to make and maintain, using human energy to keep the work piece revolving. In the middle of winter the best way to keep warm is to turn a few bowls. I cut all of the wood for my bowls and spoons with either a chainsaw, bow saws or large one man cross cut saws. The tools I use for bowl turning are hand forged. I enjoy forging almost as much as I enjoy working with wood. Sometimes I carve bowls using the same tools I use for carving spoons; axes and knives, with the addition of a small adze for hollowing. These are very different in form to the turned bowls and usually I will only make these for sale on request. I do all my work in an old Devon barn, on beautiful Dartmoor where I live. I love to cook good, simple, healthy meals and enjoy foraging for wild foods. I’m always well entertained; watching the wildlife in the woods is so much better than watching the TV. In the evenings I enjoy playing my battered acoustic guitar or the fiddle; the former less badly than the latter.

Man has more than 10 years finance and account management experience. After qualified from chartered certified accountancy practices, she joined the charitable sector 6 years ago as a senior finance person with the intension to apply financial skillset to support worthy causes. Man has a track record of transforming internal procedures to achieve financial objectives. Her area of expertise was overseeing accounting function; managing systems and procedures to ensure best practice in terms of financial control and compliance with relevant regulations such as SORP and pension; preparing annual statutory financial statements, budget and forecast; managing annual audit. Lutfur Haider BA (Hons) Assistant Accountant Lutfur joined Bird College in November 2022; as an Assistant Accountant with first class BA honours degree in Accounting and Finance. Lutfur was an Assistant Management Accountant in his previous role, progressing towards becoming an Accountant. Daniel’s experience both on and off the stage has allowed him greater insight into the inner workings of a professional production and has only served to inspire and fuel his artistic vision.
