Any classroom demo videos and introduction videos proffered to us by you during the internship or job booking procedure will also be stored indefinitely by us. Video calls may also be recorded for our own purposes but this will be mentioned prior to us commencing the video call. When payments are made through our website for any of the services or products offered by us, it may be necessary for the banks and card processing agencies to have access to this data. Your mail preferences will be stored by us including whether or not you wish to receive marketing from us about the products and services we offer and any discounts that may arise for specific time limited periods. What we do with your information Upon application for an internship the user information is kept by edcentric teaching and used in the following ways: Your personal details are used by us in order to apply for the services you book through us. For the most part your personal information will have to be sent to third parties in order for us to be able to offer the services stated by us on our website. Such third parties include but are not limited to local governing bodies in China, the PSB and the Chinese embassy or high commission. We will never profit from the sale of your personal information to other parties. CV's and all other documents related to the education/teaching/work background of our customers are sent onto our partnering schools so that they can look through all of our internship candidates. As all our partnering schools are based at the kindergarten level we strive to ensure high quality throughout but this does cut both ways. Whilst we strive to vet our partnering schools to ensure a high quality service to our budding TEFL'ers, so must we keep the interests of the schools and institutions we work with and the young learners that attend them front and centre by ensuring that we provide teachers with a strong moral compass and of sound mind. We may ask for classroom demos, personal introduction videos or maybe just live recordings of a video call. They are for the purpose of being sent to our partnering schools and kindergartens upon their request of them. We may also on occasion wish to share your demo video on our website or one of our social platforms as an example for all others to follow. edcentric teaching will not ask permission for this but should you notice your video is live and wish for it be taken down we will comply with your request. Your payment details are never stored by us and they are only ever used in such cases as the banks and card processing agencies needing to authenticate and authorise a purchase made through our website by you. Email addresses are collected for the sole purpose of communication and also, occasionally, to market our services and our services alone. Where do I start? If you want to fly and operate drones professionally, the General VLOS Certificate (GVC) is the most practical and effective way to reach your aims. Legally you don't need any special training or certification to fly drones commercially (just a Flyer ID, Operator ID and correct insurance), however for most operators the limitations on where you can fly and how close you can get to people are far too restrictive to be practical. This is referred to as the Open Category. It is possible to fly with fewer restrictions in Open Category via the A2 Certificate of Competence (A2 CofC), however there are some strong caveats with regards to its usefulness and longevity (see the A2 CofC below for more info). The way to remove and reduce the limitations on where you can fly is by obtaining a CAA Operational Authorisation (an "OA") so you can operate in what's called the Specific Category. To obtain an OA, you first need to complete a GVC course with an approved training provider, like AV8. The OA is a formal permission that allows you to fly drones up to 25kg inside congested and built up areas and to within 50m of people. The important distinction to note is that this 50m separation distance is measured as an invisible "bubble" around the drone, as apposed to the 50m "cylinder" that applies in the Open Category. This effectively means that, subject to certain safety precautions, you have enormous freedoms in where you can fly, even to the point of flying overhead people if you're more than 50m above them if it can be done safely (and for no longer than necessary). An OA also provides you with a far more professional client-facing image, so much so that its estimated that around 80% of the UK's £42bn drone industry is only available to operators with an OA, since most clients specify it as a baseline requirement. If you're planning on flying for another drone operator, it will also very likely be a requirement that you have. a full GVC. The GVC is a pilot competency course designed to provide you with everything you need to obtain an Operational Authorisation (OA) from the CAA. It consists of some online study, an exam conducted under formal conditions, the creation of an operations manual, and finally a practical flight test. Once you've completed the course, you're awarded both the GVC and A2 CofC (our courses are modular!) and you can then use your shiny new certificate to apply to the CAA (see below for more info on the OA). Having a GVC brings a lot of flexibility and professionalism to your drone operations. You learn about flight operations, meteorology (the weather), flight performance, as well as the practicalities of planning and conducting safe and legal drone flights. Depending on your circumstances, the course can be finished in as little as a week, however most students complete it over the course of 4 to 6 weeks on a part time basis. The theory section of the course is completed online via our virtual learning environment; super easy to use and navigate and there are lots of quizzes and knowledge checks to keep you on track. Once you're ready, the exam is online and on-demand 24/7/365 (literally!). You'll connect with a proctor (a human being) who'll help you get set up and ready. The exam is multiple choice and covers the same areas as the knowledge checks. Because of the way our courses are structured we have a near 100% first time pass rate, however if you happened to have a bad day we provide you with some additional support and retakes of the exam are always free. With the exam complete you'll be able to log in to Flight Docs, our very own automated system for creating your operations manual. It takes around 30 minutes, after which you'll have a full compliant and formatted document sitting in your inbox. The final step is your practical flight test. We have a network of flight examiners across the whole of the UK from which you can choose the one closest and most convenient to you. We also provide you with the details of how the flight test is performed right at the start of your course so you can practice whilst you study. The test itself consists of planning for the flight, setting up, completing the various manoeuvres, responding to simulated emergencies and closing your operation down. It may seem a little daunting but we guide you every step of the way.

After I eventually graduated, I landed my dream job as a conference producer. I was over the moon! This even blossomed into a rewarding career over several years. Even though I loved my job, I noticed the company I worked for had started to change. The new management was driving many talented people I respected out, and their values started to really diverge from my own. I still loved the CEO, and to my surprise, when I handed in my notice, she gave me a rather lovely present. My CEO asked me to launch a cosmetic product business she had been working on for a while. Even though I had no direct experience in this industry, she trusted in my abilities and shattered a long-standing belief that I could only work in one industry or for other people. I started to believe in myself. I now felt I could run my own business. I just wished I had discovered this belief earlier, and later discovered through the extensive training I completed in becoming a coach, that you can set these empowering beliefs yourself with the right coach! I decided to finally scratch my travel itch and embark on a journey around the world with no set end date. I travelled for 18 months, and realized that there was so much more to life than staying in an office in London. After sipping Caiprinhas in Rio, skydiving in Buenos Aires, trekking table-top mountains and waterfalls across Venezuela, hot air ballooning over Turkey and Ukraine, and experiencing the long summer nights with friendly locals across Scandinavia, I didn’t want to come back. Who would? After working on a 6 month contract for my previous CEO to recover some of that money I spent travelling, the belief within me that I could do my own thing was still strong. So I invested in courses on ways to make money myself, including a year-long real estate investment course. After investing in some real estate myself, I ended up working with a property developer as it was a chance to learn how to find and secure bigger developments and deals, which was a way to build long-term wealth and more passive income. But I absolutely HATED (no that’s not strong enough a word) working with the people and all the values they stood for. It was purely for money. After a few months, I realized how lonely and unhappy I was. My life really was out of balance. Eventually I became quite depressed and felt lost, so I decided to hire a NLP coach who specialized in career transition. I remember so vividly one of the powerful tools she coached with me in particular made me realize I was not living as the person I was born to be. I looked at myself objectively as a character in a movie. This guy Matt I was seeing was hunched over his home office desk, all alone, looking outside into his garden watching the rain. I realized that Matt was a social, fun and confident guy. He was not using his natural talents and far from an environment that made him thrive. It was like watching a bird screaming to get out of a tiny cage. It was not right – I had to let him free. After this coaching, a friend recommended me to his boss for a sales role I would have ordinarily pass off had it not been for this insight through coaching. I got the job and thrived in sales, breaking various team and company records in my first year. But I wanted more: to travel much more, take care of my health, find balance and do my own thing again. So I invested in a personal coach for 12 months, who motivated me to take big decisions. I left the UK in August 2017 for Australia and then Asia. Inspired after the powerful NLP coaching I had experienced, I planned several NLP retreats and trainings to become a trainer just for my own personal development. Through various business and career transitions, and observing the structures that worked for me and my coaching clients, I realized any life transition that was sustainable had to have three magic elements: Passion, Purpose and Balance. On top of the extensive coaching training I had, I decided to interview a series of people who have made the journey from feeling bored and burnt out in their career, to transitioning to a life of balance, passion and purpose in brand new fields. I noticed patterns in all of these stories that lead to developing my own unique coaching model for career transition. I call this to ‘Burn From Within’. One year ago today, we were not sure how we would be delivering educational experiences for our students. Two years ago, the situation was even worse as we were not sure whether we would be able to offer anything meaningful at all in person. The relative normality of this year’s first day of school brings reassurance and joy. So far it seems that everyone has grown over the summer, and our returners look more confident and poised than they did six weeks ago. No doubt they have many stories to share, much better in person than through the various social media platforms that they have been inhabiting. Our new S1 students are excited about starting this new phase in their lives. A few have had to ask for directions to classes, but good for them that they have the confidence to do so. They will bring much to the future of our school and in the blink of an eye they will be in S6 preparing for the next phase. Being Part of the Community The vast majority of our students are showing their pride in being part of the Broughton High School community by wearing school uniform and dress code. That is part of their contribution to their school, and is most welcome. I would emphasise that although school uniform is much less expensive than the designer clothing that teenagers might choose to wear, we are keen to support families who are struggling with the cost of clothing. The best way to access this is via our guidance team, through either a direct phone call or an email to school reception. Academic Success More detailed information will be forthcoming, but I am absolutely delighted to share that the attainment gained by our S4-S6 students last year was outstanding. Despite the many challenges that they had to face, they contributed to the best set of SQA results that the school has ever seen. Better than the exam-free years of 2020 and 2021. Better than any year since statistics have been recorded in the current format. This is particularly remarkable, given that the national pass rates have actually declined this year. This level of academic success is not just down to ability but comes as a result of many factors: hard work and resilience; support from parents and carers; and untiring high quality teaching and regard from staff are some. A massive well done from me and the whole school staff to those young people. Senior Staffing News We welcome Mrs Lisa Evans to our school senior leadership team. Mrs Evans has been a curriculum leader in another Edinburgh school for the past eight years, and was previously an English teacher at Broughton. I am delighted that Mrs Evans is back in the Broughton HS family and we look forward to great things. Recently we also welcomed Mr Steven Frew back to Broughton HS after a few years as a curriculum leader in East Lothian. Mr Frew joined us just before the end of the summer term in the role of Senior Development Officer. One of his key roles is to explore the diversity in our school community and make the most of the opportunities that this provides. This will be fascinating and will provide further impetus to cohesion and success in our school. Mr Frew was also previously with us as a Business Education teacher. It speaks volumes for Broughton HS that staff who have progressed in their career are keen to re-join us further down the line. I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Shona Wallace, Depute Headteacher, has been appointed on an acting basis to the Headship of Craigroyston Community High School. Mrs Wallace will work hard – as she always does – to support the community at Craigroyston. We wish her well, and look forward to her return in the latter part of the academic year. Dragon Tang Soo Do is an Association of friendly family martial arts clubs based predominantly in the South West of England. Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art which teaches self-defence, fighting skills and weapons, in addition, its many benefits also act as a guide to allow people to live a healthy and harmonious life. Incorporated within the Association is a Japanese based style of martial arts called Wado Ryu. These clubs which are based in Bournemouth joined the Association in 2004 and share our ethos, values and aims. Together we are a strong, united and friendly group of like minded martial artists keen to improve our knowledge and pass on our skills and experience to others. Our clubs cater for people with a wide range of abilities and ages (5 years and above), so whether you want to train to improve your fitness and health, or are keen to learn how to defend yourself, or simply want to find a hobby to relieve stress and make new friends, then we maybe for you! We live in challenging times and nowadays, increasing numbers of people are learning to protect themselves and their families, our martial arts are a very effective tried and tested method of self-defence. History of Tang Soo Do The very first evidence of this ancient form of Korean martial arts appeared during the Three Kingdom era (57 BC-935 AD) as Hwa Rang Do. Since then, 2,000 years have passed. The indigenous martial arts quietly developed through generations of the Korean people. During some eras it flourished and other times it diminished, according to the political, economic or cultural environment. The art was known by various names throughout the eras, such as Hwa-Rang Do, Kyuck Too Ki, Moo Sul, Soo Bahk Ki, Soo Byuck Ki, and others. Following 1945 Korean independence, the Korean martial arts were again merged and flourished throughout the entire Korean Peninsula. Many organisations were founded with various names such as Soo Bahk Do, Tang Soo Do, Tae Soo Do, etc… At the beginning of the modern era of the Korean martial arts, Tang Soo Do was the most popular term for these arts. However, at that time, the Korean political leader was concerned about establishing Korean value based on Korean nationalism. The political leaders recognized the popularity of Korean martial arts around the world, but were opposed to the use of the name Tang Soo Do for the art, as it sounded like a Chinese martial art, because the first word “Tang” could be interpreted as representing the Chinese Tang Dynasty (617-907 AD). In 1964, a government sponsored small group created a new name for the Korean martial arts: Tae Kwon Do. We still respect the original term, Tang Soo Do, and intend to preserve its heritage and value as a traditional way or path. Unfortunately, many Tae Kwon Do instructors did not maintain the traditional values of the true martial arts. Instead, they converted to a sport as they have progressed to the internationally recognized sports arenas such as the Olympic games. This was considered to be a great political achievement, to bring strength and prominence to the Korean government in International politics. True Martial Arts lovers had no place within these Tae Kwon Do dojangs (Training Halls) to continue to pursue traditional martial arts because they abandoned many valuable aspects of true Martial Arts to become a simple competitive sport. We, as Tang Soo Do practitioners are striving to maintain traditional values of respect, dicipline, self control, self improvement, etiquette and ultimately live a healthy and harmonious life, physically and mentally. History of Wado Ryu It would be very difficult to trace the original roots of karate back to their inception, however it is believed that the Okinawan Islands off the Japanese coast were the birth place of the art practiced across the world today. Despite the strong links to Japan, the original name was “Chinese hand" or "Tang hand" which during the early part of the 1900s, the Japanese changed to Kara-te “open” or “empty hand” Wado Ryu is one of the four most popular karate styles practiced today, in comparison with others, it is relatively modern with the founder Hironori Ohtsuka, who had studied other forms of martial arts previously, introducing Wado Ryu in Tokyo around the mid 1930s. It wasn’t until 1965 that it was introduced to the United Kingdom by Tatsuo Suzuki. What I remember most of my childhood is drawing, drawing all the time, every opportunity. My father loved music and loved to dance. We would dance together. My mother designed clothes and was a dressmaker and cake baker. My parents had arrived in England in 1954 from Jamaica and lived in the Brixton area. They lived on Concannon Road from around 1955 and moved to Railton Road in 1959 after they had wed at the church at Santley Street, around the corner of Concannon Road. Today I live by my painting and continue in my mothers’ and fathers’ legacy as a creator. I am open to producing works of art by commission. painting Painting is expression, a way of me talking with everybody else about how I feel, like a bluesman would play his blues. A retired Social Worker, I have a passion for children, young people and their families. Over the last 40 years I have had roles in church including youth leader and Pathfinder club leader as well as teaching in children’s Sabbath school & children’s church. It was my joy, to find the most creative and interesting ways to engage children and young people with so many varied learning styles. Over the last 12 years of my career I was a Team Leader for a local authority Fostering Service; having responsibility for facilitating training, assessing foster carers and placing children from diverse and challenging backgrounds with those carers. Life-long learning is part of who I am and I started becoming more interested in paper crafts when my now, 25 year old son was around 3 years old. We started to make cards for every occasion and stopped buying them from the shops. Paper crafts opened the door to so many other crafting pursuits and my love for crafting has only grown since then, from wedding decoration, decoupage & canvas art to knitting & simple sewing, I have done many and various and still do.
