Friends Of Fairlands Farm

friends of fairlands farm

London

In 2017, The Comet,, a local newspaper, issued an appeal to find a way to restore and revive Fairlands Farm - to save it from 'wrack and ruin.' It reported that the farmhouse had been registered as an Asset of Community Value. The registration had occurred when a few residents of the local neighbourhood had noticed dereliction of the site. After making enquires to Stevenage Borough Council, they sought the help of a local charity based in their area, to prevent the council from executing their undesirable plan. Leading the residents, the charity could only ensure the site's registration and, refusing to take advice, ultimately could not develop a viable proposal for the use of the farm. Although aware the farmhouse was a Grade II listed building, the group's ambitions blinded them to its implications. Efforts to sell the site had first been made around 2008 when the local council sought to raise funds for town-centre redevelopment. That is really when our story should begin, but until ghosts from the past came to guide us ten summers later that wasn't known. The town-centre scheme had barely begun when prospective investors got cold feet due to a global financial crash, but it gave time to ensure the farmhouse gained its listed status which was a local historian, Margaret Ashby had first proposed in 2004. In 2011 further attempts were made to market the farm, but with the listing now in place the was no party willing to take on the risk. By 2016, lack of investment left the house unsafe for occupation. After 25 years at the farm, the trustees of Digswell Arts Trust decided it was time to call it a day and the artists cleaned their brushes for the last time. With the property unoccupied for the first time since 1990, the council returned to its plans to sell the property to a pub or restaurant chain for the third time. Renewed determination to rid itself of the albatross around its neck, the council commissioned a condition survey to establish the extent and cost of repairs needed, but the plans failed to pass under the radar of the ever-watchful residents, and so it came to our notice. Reading about the plight of the house, Friends of Fairlands Farm recognised that an organisation dedicated to ensuring respect for the long heritage of the farm, that its place in the hearts of the people of Stevenage, would be necessary to commit to and sustain its longevity, and so the CIC was formed. We hope that the former dairy farm and arts centre will once again proudly stand central to the whole community of Stevenage and invite you to support and join Friends of Fairlands Farm on this journey. Able Hands Together

Stoford

Having worked in social care since college, Able Hands Together Founder Laura Tween focussed her work on adults with learning disabilities. After completing her law degree it soon became apparent that the average office environment wasn’t the space for her. She became a social care consultant, and it was through this work that she found her creative energy and passion for community projects was highly suited to being a social entrepreneur. Whilst delivering social care, Laura found that most therapeutic activities for people, like cinema or bowling, were entirely non-skills building. Laura wanted to create an offering where they could learn new skills, build their independence and work on emotional well-being simultaneously. A therapeutic farm service ticked all these boxes. Able Hands Together was established in 2015. The role of the Co-Farmer was soon born, to assist with day to day farm work, building employability, interpersonal skills, independence, and self esteem. Both staff and Co-Farmers work together to care for the animals, & plan and maintain the smallholding to make the most of the growing season. We have just had the exciting news that Able Hands Together has been approved as an Alternative Education Centre by Wiltshire County Council for Co-Farmers aged 18 and over. Laura is immensely proud of Able Hands Together and welcomes you to get in touch. Jason Rhodes Jason Rhodes Director Jason is the Managing Director of Commercial Business at Nottingham Trent University. Jason brings a wealth of business knowledge and advice to Able Hands Together. Jake Tween Jake Tween Director Jake interprets Government Policies on Education to ensure that the advice given by Able Hands Together is of a high standard. He also serves as a great consultant when it comes to the boring paperworky stuff. Nicolette Ann Shears-White Team Member Nic has worked at Able Hands Together for a number of years now and is proud to have a close working relationship with all the Co-Farmers. Having previously been a social worker, Nic is well connected with Hampshire based learning disability professionals and is very knowledgeable about safeguarding and rights. She promotes our Co-Farmers’ independence and works with a skills based approach with our clients. Carl Anderson Carl Anderson Team Member Carl is an ex-member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. He brings a wealth of skills-based services to the farm. If something needs to be built, Carl’s the man to do it! Our Co-Farmers love helping him to construct and build everything, from goat gates to raised vegetable beds. All staff that support our Co Farmers have DBS checks, are employed with their employment history and references checked. They are trained in safeguarding, Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity. Staff receive ongoing supervision and have access to further training.

Tariki Trust

tariki trust

Tariki Trust is a community of people who believe that our actions matter and our impact on others has consequences at many levels. Our spiritual and moral values are something which we live out, and that need to permeate all we do. They are not simply ideas or practices to be addressed in limited time slots during a busy day. Tariki Trust offers courses, training and retreats which centre on our shared interest in our living systems. These include training and events linked to ecotherapy, psychology, psychotherapy, environmentalism, spiritual care and other forms of engaged Buddhism. A UK registered Buddhist charity, Tariki Trust was founded in 2011 and has become an umbrella for a wide range of activities in these inter-related fields. Our non-sectarian outlook welcomes people from many backgrounds, some of whom are Buddhist, but many of whom are not, to share in building a vision of a more wholesome world, based on values of compassion, mutual support and care for our position as part of a greater system. Tariki Trust is a community of people who are interested in learning, ideas, creativity and social responsibility. We believe in practising through concern for others and engagement with life in all its forms. The name Tariki means 'other-power' in Japanese. Other-power is a fundamental concept in Pureland Buddhism and expresses our commitment to a collective, collaborative approach. It is also the basis for Other-Centred Approach, the model of psychotherapy which underpins many Tariki courses and events. The Other-Centred model is flexible, suggesting an attitude of engagement and encounter rather than of introspection and rigidity, and leading us to embrace many fields of involvement and cultural activities as well as the narrowly therapeutic. Many of Tariki Trust’s activities were run by an earlier organisation, established in 1996, and its course programmes have a history going back over several decades. Tariki Trust itself was established in 2011 in order to offer a dedicated space for these programmes and at this time the Ten Directions training programme in ecotherapy was also established. Tariki Trust is a UK Registered Charity Number 1149658. It has a board of trustees who oversee its work and ensure good practice. Tariki Trust does not have any salaried staff, but, rather, has teaching staff and others working on a sessional or occasional basis. This means that much of Tariki’s work in supporting courses and activities is done on a voluntary, dana basis. As a charity, Tariki Trust is subject to the jurisdiction of the UK Charity Commission and has a number of policies and guidelines in place for good practice. These can be viewed on our old website.

The MasterHearting Club

the masterhearting club

You may be familiar with masterminding, where a group of like-minded individuals get together (in person or online) to support each other, exchange ideas, discuss challenges and so on. They can be executives or any other professional, but are often business owners/entrepreneurs, where people around them on a daily basis usually do not have the same priorities or outlook and so cannot understand the unique challenges they face. Hi, I’m Arthur Kendall, founder of the Masterhearting Club. I had been wanting to set up some sort of masterminding group for some time when one day, in late 2018, I read about a new approach, which instead of focussing on solving problems using the mind, people would use the heart as the guide. This immediately resonated with me and I decided to set up a platform which would allow people (of any background) to set up private or semi-private groups – where certain things can be shared with the wider community. In the first instance I intend to use this online platform to organise a small beta group, with a couple of local friends plus a couple of remote members, to test this dynamic, all of whom have an entrepreneurial streak, though quite different backgrounds, which is important, to allow different perspectives on our challenges. Since I live in a fairly rural area, albeit a provincial capital, a major motivator was to allow closer connections to be formed with people around the world who share a similar worldview on consciousness, leadership and entrepreneurship. This will allow members to spend time with people who more closely align with our international entrepreneurial outlook and desire to make the world a better place. At the same time, I can help others achieve the same and create their own groups within this heart-centred, conscious business community. So this is your community. Not like you read in so many sites and marketing blurbs. I may be the originator, but this thing is bigger than me, the universe is creating it, initially through me, but as a way to bring people together that will evolve it in ways I cannot even yet conceive. I will not set direction and insist on strategies to get to where I want to go. That is the conventional “predict and control” model, which I know is destined for the history books. My model is the “sense and response” model, and I will use it to adapt the site, and as more come on board, you will also contribute to its destiny. Thank you for your interest in the Masterhearting Club and I hope your membership will be as transformational for you as it is for me.
