Parent Zone was founded in 2008 to make a difference. At the time, the UK was rated one of the worst places in Europe to raise a child. Our mission was simple: to improve outcomes for children in an increasingly digital world. But we wanted to do it differently. The parenting sector had become exclusive and out of touch with real families. We challenged the status quo – not for the sake of it, but because challenge was needed. We wanted to test assumptions and stereotypes around family life – to understand what parents and families really needed. Once, Parent Zone was our CEO and founder Vicki Shotbolt, an office and a desk. Today, we are many (not forgetting Teddy, the office dog), with stations across the UK and teams across the planet.

In 2009 Bristol Parent Carers was formed as an independent, parent-led organisation, providing the new way forward. We aim to reach out to more parent carers, involve them in a variety of different exciting ways, build on past good work and continue to provide a voice for all. We are a group of parents and carers of children with disabilities and special needs who live in Bristol. For 20 years parent carers and parent support agencies in Bristol have worked in partnership with the local authorities to shape service provision for children and young people with disabilities and special needs. These initiatives have been successful in bringing about positive changes for parent carers and their children.

Our regular coffee mornings and evening meetings are informal and relaxed. We often invite guest speakers from education, health and early years to talk to parents about local SEND services and answer their questions. Even if a particular guest speaker does not interest you, there is always time for a chat and a hot drink at every meeting. Children are also welcome to attend. There is no pressure to come regularly or even stay for the whole session as we know that your free time can be limited and unpredictable. Events We run workshops and training events for parents on a wide range of SEND-related issues. As well as gaining expertise and insight, you will be supported by other parent carer trainers who may have lived through the stage of your ‘journey’ and who will have knowledge and information to share with you that could be really beneficial. We also organise information days which give parents, carers and young people the chance to meet local services and providers. Partnership working We work closely with Brent Council, health providers, schools and other organisations to help design and deliver local services that meet the needs of children and young people with SEND. We regularly attend their meetings and committees to feedback the views and experiences of our members. Parent carers can help to highlight problems that are frequently experienced by families of children with additional needs, and this knowledge is useful to help professionals make informed choices about local services. Evidence shows that this sort of active participation leads to improved service provision, take up and ultimately better outcomes for children and young people with SEND. WHO WE ARE The forum is an independent, parent-led organisation that helps bring together parents and carers of children and young people aged 0-25 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Brent. We help and support families of children with SEND by providing information, advice and a listening ear. By gathering ideas and feedback from our members, we also work closely with local organisations to positively improve the planning and delivery of services in Brent for children and young people with additional needs and disabilities. Set up in 2017, our forum is run by a friendly group of volunteers who are all parent carers and understand the issues and challenges that looking after a child with SEND can bring.

Young Parent Talks

Che, founder of Young Parent Talks, is a young mum from Birmingham who has been sharing her story in schools, colleges and youth clubs for almost 4 years. After her life was disrupted by teenage pregnancy and an intense abusive relationship, Che was left with very little ambition and aim in life. She ended up having a baby at 19 thinking this would be 'the easy option'. She had a reality check when she realised it wasn't as easy as she'd thought and really struggled to step up to the responsibility of having a child. After working hard to get her life together whilst also raising her child, she started working for charity, Straight Talking. This is where Che found her passion, teaching young people the realities of being a young parent. In 2022, Che set up 'Young Parent Talks', delivering sessions and assembly's in school's, teaching pupils what it really means to become a teenage parent and how it changes your life, by sharing her story. For information on how you can have Che come into your school, please feel free get in touch. Please see below what's included in our 'Teenage Pregnancy Workshop', the learning objectives and how it links with the National Curriculum.

2009, the local Parent Carer Forum was born. Two mums (including our CEO, Rachel) with the passion to help others were given the opportunity to make a difference for others like themselves. This was part of a government initiative to create Parent Carer Forums throughout the country that would represent the parent voice in the design of services. Over the years we have grown from strength to strength and in number with some of our key highlights being: 2010 We ran our first conference and have run several other conferences and events throughout the years. 2016 We created our Really Useful Guides; a helpful resource for families. 2018 We developed our workshops for Parent Carers. 2019 Was a triple celebration; not only did we celebrate our 10th anniversary, but we also opened our Community Base in Kingswood and were awarded “Excellence in Parent Carer Participation” at Contact’s national award ceremony, held at The Palace of Westminster. 2022 We started the new year welcoming seven new staff members to the team as well as opening a new venue for Little Treasures, and reaching Parent Carers across Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire by delivering some workshops in partnership with our colleagues in North Somerset.
