We teach an alternative curriculum to young people who are finding it difficult to manage in a mainstream setting. We aim to provide high quality education and pastoral care to pupils who struggle within the mainstream education system. We work with pupils on a one to one basis or in small groups. We work with families, schools and other agencies to promote effective inclusion of all students, to ensure they achieve their full potential and, where possible, return to mainstream schools. Our teachers are experienced in dealing with students who struggle to manage their behaviour. We offer specialised support for students with special educational needs or who speak English as an additional language. Signalong The Communication Charity (1039788) provides resources, training and free advice, and readily works with others in the field to promote communication skills for children and adults with speech, language and communication needs and English as an additional language. Signalong was founded in 1992 at a Kent special school and now provides resources and training throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia. A central tenet of Signalong is “one concept per sign, one sign per concept” which is different to other British Sign Language based systems, which require an understanding of the context in order to distinguish meaning. People who have learning difficulties, especially those with Autism, may find it difficult to differentiate the context. Signalong has researched and published the widest range of signs in Britain. These are drawn and described following a consistent method that enables users to access vocabulary according to need. Resources published by the charity cater for a range of ages and ability from pre-school and pre-language up to preparation for employment.

Firstly, our programmes are completely personalised to each candidate; no two people have the same experience because we only train between 20 and 30 trainees each year. Unlike the big university models where you would be one of 200 trainee teachers, we tailor the year to maximise your skills and you will therefore be better prepared to teach. We have our own supportive SCITT community, our own wellbeing programme and our own life coach. Secondly, because our trainees don’t have to attend University lectures, we have time to give them a bespoke enhancement programme running alongside the mainstream school placements. Our secondary trainees have the opportunity to teach in primary schools, pupil referral units, Special Educational Needs settings, work with CAHMS and teach in Sixth Forms. They also spend time at our local private schools to teach children with English as an additional language. Again, trainee curriculum design is tailored to maximise preparation. Thirdly, our programmes are competitively priced because we know graduates are already carrying huge university debts. We charge £7705 for QTS, as opposed to £9000, but we also give a free qualification for secondary trainees in addition to QTS so they leave as qualified Teachers of the PSHE Association [Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education]. This gives them an edge over other candidates when applying for jobs, and fully prepares them for teaching beyond the curriculum and preparing their pupils for life in modern Britain.
