This single day knife making course is a great way to make yourself an item that will last a lifetime and is a wonderful introduction into making knives for the kitchen. On this one day course we forge a petty knife with a simple Wa handle. We will go into details of general shape forging and then into the fine details of distal tapers and hand bevelling to create a slicing blade used for many kitchen tasks.&nbsp; Once forged we will learn about heat treatment and then grinding in the final stages of the edges geometry using free grinding techniques. What to Expect
Raku Firing: Explore this traditional Japanese technique known for its captivating effects. Learn the low-temperature, fast-firing process, involving removing pottery at bright red heat and placing it in containers with combustible materials to achieve unique results.
Saggar Firing:  Saggar firing is a technique where ceramic pieces are enclosed in a container (the saggar) filled with combustible materials to create unique surface effects through smoke, fuming, and localized reduction.
Barrel Firing: Experience wood firing in a steel barrel using oxides, carbonates, and copper wire to create vibrant colors.
 Copper Matte/Copper Wash Technique is a decorative pottery method that uses copper oxide or carbonate to create unique metallic or iridescent effects.
Horsehair Firing: Add unique effects to your pottery using horsehair applied to the surface.
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Hands on Experience: Learn how to work with gas-fired raku kilns, 'mummy' saggars, and barrel kilns.  While you won’t be removing 1000°C pots from the kilns yourself—for safety and insurance reasons—you’ll be guided through the full process, gaining insight into the techniques, tools, and timing involved. Our demonstrations are detailed and designed to build your understanding and confidence, so you can safely explore these methods further in your own practice. You’ll be actively participating in the firing process—adding sawdust to glowing pots, witnessing the effects of reduction, and engaging closely with flame and smoke. This is a thrilling part of the experience, and proper safety gear (such as gloves and masks) is recommended.

Techniques and Skills:- Learn alternative pot preparation techniques, resist techniques, copper wash application, sacrificial glaze (naked raku), reduction glazes, and burnishing advice.

Expert Guidance: Benefit from the expertise of two experienced instructors, ensuring personalized help and advice throughout the course.

Materials: Optionally, bisque fired pots are available for £10 each, or you can bring your own masterpieces, guidance on preparation will be supplied at time of booking.

I can only say it was even better the second time around - and on top of everything we were blessed with lovely weather.

Abi and Alison are not only knowledgable and experienced in their craft but are friendly and patient and always engaging. They had made strenuous efforts to keep everybody safe in these strange viral times and to put everybody at ease.
The whole two days were a joy. Exciting, and inspirational. It’s given me so much more confidence now, to improve on the techniques and skills learned and to advance with a raku kiln of my own. I cannot recommend the experience too highly. 
No doubt I will be back for another ‘booster’ session in the not too distant future. It’s worth it for the food alone!

Learn from an experienced local artist, who&#39;ll teach you how to paint using traditional materials like bamboo brushes, sumi ink, Gansai Tambi 顔彩耽美 (Traditional Japanese colours), gold leaves on rice paper.Paint Japanese scenes with us! We will bring along a selection of seasonal references from the different Japanese art movements like Ukiyo-e, Rinpa School and also some Japanese contemporary artists. Depending on your confidence level you can choose to design your own work using the references for inspiration or you if you&#39;re feeling less confident you can copy a reference directly.This painting class is suitable for beginners as well as those with a little more artistic experience, so don&#39;t worry if it&#39;s your first time. Your teacher will be on hand to provide guidance and answer any questions.At the end of your art class, you&#39;ll get the chance to stand back and admire your beautiful Japanese painting or you can share your experiences with the group. You&#39;ll head home with your completed piece and a new skill that&#39;s perfect to practice whenever you&#39;re looking to clear your head.This workshop is located at Brewdog Outpost Manchester where food &amp; drink is available for purchase before, during and after the workshop. *Towards the end of the workshop there will be an opportunity for you to get your photo taken.
