-A Better Start Southend is about using new ways of thinking to solve some of the problems that have affected local children and families for years. We started life in April 2015 and are one of five Better Start areas across the country funded by The National Lottery Community Fund. We are a partnership of local organisations who have years of experience working with families and young children. Most importantly, we’re working with local parents and carers to find out what needs to change if we are going to give Southend’s children the best start they can have. We focus on three specific areas of a child’s development; Diet and Nutrition, Social and Emotional Development and Communication and Language. Additionally, we also focus on building Community Resilience and implementing System Change.

The Goliath Digital Learning Hub (DLH) is made up of teachers from our Goliath Trust schools which are located in disadvantaged areas in and round Belfast. With schools currently focusing on learning in the classroom and at home, the DLH teachers continue to focus on ways to address this. The DLH teachers support one another, through mentorship and learning communities, and have shared our ‘Gino the Dino’ Learn to Earn initiative with the wider school communities. The Learn to Earn initiative aims to motivate learners to engage and complete different daily tasks that promote social and emotional wellbeing, reading and other teacher activities. It is crucial to deliver the message that teachers care about their pupils education by encouraging different ways of learning, daily contact and check ins.

My stained glass is the result of thoughtful dedication as I explore less obvious ways to approach a design. My stained glass explores a use of an iconography, influenced by nature, combined with our deep-seated human need of ornamentation and decoration. I seek to marry harmony with visual stimulation. I seek to enhance, uplift and delight. I seek to create visual sanctuaries of respite from the stressful, chaotic world of today. I am fascinated by the idea of a ‘universal visual harmony’ and how it invokes feelings of positivity and well-being in the viewer. There is no formula for creating visual harmony and I am constantly seeking and exploring new solutions

Both Gary and Jayne have been freelance coaches and trainers since 2000 and decided to bring their training and coaching work together under the umbrella GSP Coaching Ltd (Gisborne Saul-Paterson Ltd). Gary is an experienced leadership coach and trainer who has worked for over 30 years as a Headteacher, Headteacher Support Coordinator, trainer and facilitator in a variety of organisations mostly within the Education sector. Gary has helped to inspire significant change and development for a wide range of clients in schools, local authorities and businesses, and provides confidential and motivational support for mainly leaders. He provides a Headteacher and staff pastoral support service plus coaching and training predominately in schools based in South West but can work remotely with schools across the country. Jayne is an experienced and qualified Coach, Careers Adviser and Trainer who has been delivering teaching, coaching, training and advisory services for 30 years. Jayne is a proactive advocate for Equality and Inclusion and has worked on a number of diversity projects including setting up and leading the employer mentoring scheme at the University of the West of England whilst working there as a Careers Consultant. She has previously worked in Primary, Secondary and Advisory teaching roles specialising in emotional intelligence, mental health, race equality and special needs. Jayne has designed and delivered training programmes including those specifically aimed at women, ethnically diverse individuals particularly in the areas of career, emotional well-being, positive psychology and personal development.
