From propaganda to advertising, posters are a ubiquitous, powerful vehicle to take a message to the masses. Over four weeks, learn how to approach poster design in a creative and practical way. Although some computer work will be introduced, it will only be used as another production tool, participants will be encouraged to experiment with analogue techniques such as collage and hand-generated type. You will learn about the history of poster design; learn to use aspects of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop; develop approaches to letterform and layout. The emphasis of this course is on the development of a set of posters from research and design through to output. Week 1: History History of Poster Design: Looking at significant and famous posters from around the globe and their impact on society. Practical activity: After a quick introduction to InDesign we will recreate one of these posters, studying the component parts and their relationships to one another. Homework: Think of a concept for your design. What is it for? Who is your target audience? Where and how will it be displayed? Select a favourite poster to bring in or discuss with the group in week 2. Week 2: Image We will begin by discussing participant posters they have brought in to share and look at positives and potential negatives within the designs. Image selection can be a key factor to the success of your poster campaign. We will think about the choices between photography and illustration looking at examples of how this is done successfully. Think about the different ways we can generate and use images. Practical activity: Consider what medium the image might be and how it can be created. Learn about flatbed/film scanner for potential use in image creation. Week 3: Fonts We will look at how typography impacts designs and the messages that it can convey by itself. Consider various approaches to how we can generate type. How typographic selections work alongside selected images. Practical activity: Work through a few typographic workshops thinking about how typographic choices will alter the message you are trying to convey. We will consider various ways and techniques of creating type for our poster. Homework: Developing your typographic solution further, if required. Work through variations of layout. Week 4: Output Continue working on our posters making final tweaks and selecting the poster that is our most successful design for output. We will look at the various formats for output and how we prepare our posters for print. Look at usage of different poster sizes – why use one over the other?? Practical activity: Size your final poster and get it ready for output (if working analogue, scan final poster and upscale).   Courses are subject to minimum enrolment. Please register early, within five days of the start date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation. Learn Life Drawing for Beginners Workshop Saturday 29th June- 10:45-14:30 - Friends Meeting House, Manchester Welcome to our upcoming life drawing workshop for beginners. This is an opportunity for beginner artists to come together and learn new techniques and skills in capturing the human form from a live model. Because we believe that life drawing is an essential skill for all artists, whether you're interested in figurative work, portraiture, or any other type of art that involves the human body. During this workshop you will have the chance to practice drawing the human body in a variety of poses and perspective using different techniques. Our experienced instructors will guide you through the process, providing helpful tips on anatomy, proportion and composition and individual feedback to help you overcome any challenges you may face, so you can learn to draw the human figure more confidently and competently. We will be working with a professional life model who will hold a series of poses throughout the workshop. These poses will range from short gesture poses to longer, more sustained poses, giving you plenty of opportunities to practice capturing the human form in different positions and angles. All you need to bring is your creativity and enthusiasm to improve your drawing skills, and we will provide all the drawing materials required for this course. Please note that this is a nude drawing workshop, and attendees are to be 18 years or older. We ask that attendees under 18 years of age be accompanied by a responsible adult. This is to ensure that all participants feel comfortable and safe during the workshop. This is a full day intensive workshop which will teach you the processes involved in photo etching, including preparing the metal for etching, transferring the designs onto the metal using press and peel (P&P) paper and how to use specific etching solutions to cut the designs into the metal. This course will allow you to broaden your design process so that you can add some intricate textures to your copper and silver jewellery designs. You will be provided with a set amount of materials including copper sheet to practice the process and a 4cm by 4cm piece of silver sheet to create a silver textured pendant during your session. You will be etching the majority of the day, however if you would like to create a finished design, we can accommodate this, you can do some etching in the morning and create a design in the afternoon. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: None, all abilities are welcomed. This course is a great introduction to etching for those who have a vast experience in jewellery making but have not yet tried this technique as well as beginners looking to create beautiful textural pieces of jewellery. All tools and consumables are supplied Please bring refreshments as we are no longer able to provide them The cost of this course includes copper sheet to practice the technique and a 4cm by 4cm section of silver sheet.
