On this bespoke 5 day course, silversmith Bryony Knox will show you how to design and make your own Arts &amp; Crafts inspired copper clock.
This is an ideal introduction to various metalwork techniques whilst making your own beautiful object to love and treasure.
This course will run over 5 days from 10-4pm each day. Beginners - Advanced
Bryony will explain the way to design and make a free standing clock using techniques popular amongst Arts &amp; Crafts such as riveting, piercing and the ancient art of Chasing &amp; Repousse- where sheet metal is formed and embossed using small steel tools, whilst held in pine pitch.
During the week, a slightly smaller version of the Acorn Clock, which Bryony made on BBC2's 'The Victorian House of Arts and Crafts' will be made.
Templates will be provided with room to personalise your design. The price includes copper, use of tools tools and a quartz clock mechanism.
The class will be no larger than 4 people and held in Bryony's own colourful and eclectic workshop at Coburg House Studios in Leith, Edinburgh.

On this Introduction to monoprinting workshop with Edinburgh artist Suzanne Kemplay, you will explore ways of creating simple, striking images to print onto a range of papers.&nbsp;
This is a hands-on, spontaneous and fun workshop where you will learn the basic skills of monoprinting, one of the most versatile forms of printmaking. It produces unique and playful results, making it ideal for anyone new to printing or art.&nbsp;
Build your confidence by learning how to create your own images using simple mark-making, and different textures and techniques to make a unique image as you layer colours, create shapes and texture, adding and removing ink as you go. 2 day Portrait Workshop in acrylics inspired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti&nbsp;&nbsp;Join well known Edinburgh artist and tutor Suzanne Kemplay and model Beth Davison to create a portrait in the style of the pre Raphaelite Brotherhood. Expect an atmospheric set and romantic lighting in keeping with the Rossetti&rsquo;s style, with a few modern touches thrown in.&nbsp;&nbsp;On Day 1 Suzanne will give a short talk on how to approach your composition and how to capture the spirit of the artist&rsquo;s technique. You&rsquo;ll plan and sketch out a drawing in the morning before moving on to painting in the afternoon and on day two.&nbsp;All materials are supplied (or feel free to bring your own) and the class is kept small to ensure everyone gets some individual attention. 
This course is most suited to those who have some drawing experience but we welcome beginners. Over 14s only.

She's not the right fit for epic fantasy in the vein of The Poppy War or Brandon Sanderson, or for space operas and similar science fiction.

Stages of work include:

<li>Transfering the image onto tracing paper.&nbsp;We will use tracing paper not only to transfer the design but also to learn and explore the shape and the line.</li>
<li>Transferring finished drawings onto a panel&nbsp;covered with layers of gesso.</li>
<li>Redrawing with paint.&nbsp;At this stage, students will start learning how to make paints using egg yolk and dry pigments.</li>
<li>Once all&nbsp;surfaces are covered with enough layers of ground we can start building shapes using lights. In icon painting, we don&rsquo;t build shapes with shadows.</li>
<li>Gilding&nbsp;&ndash; we will be working for real gold leaf. You will be guided step by step in this process to learn the traditional method of gilding. We will be working with oil gilding.</li>
<li>Applying&nbsp;final lights and highlights. Finishing.</li>
<li>It is recommended&nbsp;to wait at least a few weeks before varnishing the finished icon painted in egg tempera. Guidance and demonstration will be provided.</li>

 Basia Mindewicz
born in 1978 in Warsaw, is an icon painter and contemporary artist. She was trained in Poland in the College dedicated to iconography. Studying ancient techniques of egg tempera and gold gilding. For many years she has been mainly working in a very traditional style learning the language of the icon. When she came to Edinburgh she started exploring other &lsquo;&rsquo;languages&rsquo;&rsquo; searching for more personal and contemporary ways of depicting similar reality. Her development as an artist is a process of uncovering a truth about who we are as human beings and what we need to become whole. Icon painting as a spiritual practice grows in silence and stillness.
Graduated from The Maria Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education, MA and College of Iconography (Policealne Studium Ikonograficzne) in Bielsk Podlaski in 2008. She has been working for major icon-painting workshops in Poland. Organized many private workshops and residential courses.

As we stroll and enjoy some food, we&#39;ll refresh your Spanish skills, covering all the essential vocabulary and structures you&#39;re likely to use during your upcoming holiday.One non-alcoholic drink of your choice is included in the price of the course, however food isn&#39;t (but the tapas are worth every penny!).We offer flexible location options &ndash; just let us know your preference.You will leave feeling confident, motivated and ready to speak Spanish while abroad.*If you would like to take part in this session with your partner or a friend, you can do so! LOOKING FOR: MG, YA, ADULT FICTION

Originally from the North East of Scotland. Kirsten joined Zeno in the summer 2024 after time working at a previous literary agency and before that working as a bookseller in the Charing Cross branch of Foyles. Kirsten has a BA (Hons) in English from Edinburgh Napier University and a Masters in Children’s Literature from Reading University. 

Kirsten is currently building her own list alongside handling Zeno’s translation rights. 

Kirsten is looking for:

Scottish voices - especially something from the North East - Kirsten is Aberdonian and would love to help a writer from this space emerge.

Water horror - as Kirsten grew up in Aberdeen she is always looking for horror inspired by the sea or the landscape of Scotland - bonus points if it has anything to do with an oil rig!

Workplace horror like Camilla Grudova’s Children of Paradise or Calvin Kasulke’s Several People are Typing (this is not a reflection of her agency!)

Romance - especially young and contemporary - obviously bonus points if it’s set in Scotland and written by someone who has lived there. Kirsten is a huge fan of all the usual suspects, Ali Hazlewood, Ana Huang, Bolu Babalola to name a few!

Romantasy - less elves, more out of the box - Kirsten read Sarah J Maas in 2014/15 and so is looking for something that expands on the genre.

A good crime thriller - Kirsten did her dissertation on terrorism so anything that is well written in this space would be a dream for her. Additionally she really enjoys serial killer novels and the recent fake true crime novels, Penance by Eliza Clark especially thrilled her. 

A Studio Ghibli esque fantasy - luscious landscapes, brilliant characters, a powerfulstory. If any of your comps are a Ghibli film she wants to see it!

Fanfiction writers! Kirsten has always been on the sites and would love you to tell her if you’ve written fanfiction in the past / have an ongoing fanbase - maybe she has already read it.

Kirsten already has:

A nonfiction baking book - Kirsten would not want another at this moment.
A middle grade cosy fantasy - Kirsten would love to see more of this! But worries if it’s too close to what she already has, then it would be a reason for her to turn it down.
A Horror Vampire novel - again she would love to see more of this! But worries if it’s too close to what she already has, that would be a reason for her to turn it down. Vampires would probably be better for her if they were contemporary or in the romantasy space.
A Game of Thrones esque fantasy - a client is already writing this and she wants to give it the space on her list it deserves!
