Weaving is a technique that has existed for thousands of years, present in every culture across the globe. You can weave with various materials and we will be using only upcycled wool and other textile pieces. You are also more than welcome to bring your own fabric scraps or wool and incorporate them it into your project. During the 3 hours workshop, you will learn how to set up a basic weaving loom, see some examples, and discuss various possibilities how they could be incorporated into clothing and fashion projects. This workshop will familiarise you with basic weaving techniques. We will cover how to prepare a loom, the plain weave and the soumak stitch. You should be able to complete a small wall hanging about size A6 (4,1x5,8 inches) or a bookmark if you are a complete beginner. This workshop is led by Anna Baran, a trauma informed designer, artist, and maker based in the north of Edinburgh. She has always drawn inspiration from the sea, with her walks to local beaches, particularly Wardie Bay during the lockdown, becoming not only a source of new ideas for her artistic practice but also a way to gather materials such as driftwood, pieces of plastic ropes, and seashells. Anna has consistently sought to incorporate upcycled materials into her art, using her work to raise environmental awareness and promote art as an accessible medium for self-expression, regardless of financial circumstances. In addition to participating in various art exhibitions and fashion-related events, she has delivered a wide range of art and craft workshops to diverse communities across Edinburgh. Do you have a growing mountain of negatives and/or prints and wish to have them as digital files? This course will equip you with the skills to digitally archive your collection ready for reprinting and sharing online! It can be intimidating to approach alone, but this class will break the process down into an easy step-by-step tutorial – from scanning, to editing, and exporting. Having completed the course, participants will have a solid understanding of the required processes and can go on to take full control of their negatives and potential outputs. This workshop will take you through the scanning process – turning analogue negatives/prints into digital files – using two different scanners: an Epson flatbed and a Hasselblad virtual drum scanner. Providing an opportunity to look at how best to scan and restore prints as well as negatives, you will learn the benefits of both scanning systems and understand when and why to use them. Once images are scanned, you will then be shown how to take full advantage of all the information you have captured to really get the most out of the files. The course will guide you through the editing process using Adobe Photoshop to bring your photos up to the highest standard, utilizing colour correction, levels, adjustments as well as a walkthrough of the processes used to clean dust and scratches from your images. You will be shown how to export files for digital printing as well as for sharing online. All equipment and software will be provided for you, but in order to get the most out of the course you are encouraged to bring along a varied selection of negatives and/or prints to use during the course. It is estimated that you will have time to scan up to a dozen images during the day, so please do not bring along whole archives at this stage! Having completed the course you will be able to return to Stills to confidently use the scanning facilities here on a session or daily basis. However, much of the information and learning from these systems can be directly applied to your own home scanning setup if required. Courses are subject to minimum enrolment. The Art of Cinematic Performance As the two tutors come together mid-week, Carolyn and Sue will allocate scenes from screenplays for you to work on and film to self-critically view in the pursuit of understanding the process as an actor. In the final two days, whilst rehearsing the scenes, Sue will focus on the life within the character that creates the tension/conflict in the scene. Discovering with you that it is important to know the lines of the scene so well that they can become the least part of the work. It is what lies beneath the lines that creates the quality of the performance and makes for interest on camera. Over the 5 Days you will learn the importance of sub-text, and how it supports the written text.
