Lads Like Us are a Manchester based non-profit organisation. Our journey started with a mission dedicated to informing the practice of professionals and organisations that had failed us as children and adults. We had to make something positive out of our lived experience, chaos and anger, in order to thrive. Shouting and screaming about failures and trying to hold people to account made us mentally ill. We needed to adopt a new approach that would help " Us and them " that was our first problem. In order to break barriers between " Us and Them " we needed to work out a way to weaponise the empathy of professionals to allow them to see that the majority of the behaviours displayed by service users/clients/citizens/people are a direct result of some kind of trauma experienced throughout their lives. These people we refer to are lads like us, from similar estates we grew up on, that are repeatedly presenting at mental health units, substance misuse services, prison and probation. The answer to our problem was to create a trauma informed training package focusing on professional curiosity that would inform practice, using little Mike and little Danny's experiences combined with the healing journeys of both not forgetting the input from the services that supported us. " The Million Pieces Experience " an NHS safeguarding award winning Trauma Informed package that has proven to inform the practice of professionals was created. We then partnered with Barnardos to create Million Pieces Trauma master classes. Lads like us deliver bespoke packages across the country and are now recognised UK wide as a leading Lived experience resource for organisational staff development for those who work with people who have experienced trauma. Lads like us work with leaders in the safeguarding sector both public and private through their consultancy work.

Martin has an degree in agriculture from Wye College, University of London. He then taught for 16 years at Writtle College specialising in financial management, agricultural trade, EU policy and business strategy. Martin also established a series of projects to link the College with other EU states to facilitate staff and student exchange, joint course delivery and the delivery of EU funded projects. He has taught short courses in Finland, the Netherlands and Romania. He continues to work closely with the education sector and now gives guest lectures on food markets and policy at the National Centre for Food Manufacturing at the University of Lincoln. Martin co-founded an import business in 1990 which he sold in 1999 and was a partner in the family farm J A Collison and Sons from 1994-2008 which supplies cut flowers to supermarkets. He founded Collison and Associates with Lynn in 2002, having been a consultant since 2000. His clients have included a wide range of commercial, public and third sector bodies and he specializes in developing strategies, projects and programmes to deliver change in rural areas. During 2012-13 Martin worked alongside the team developing the UK Agri-Tech Strategy. Martin is a member of: Greater Lincolnshire Food Board, Greater Lincolnshire Water Management Board, Norfolk Rural Development Strategy delivery group and the CLA’s Agriculture and Land Use Committee. He was Vice Chair of the Fens Adventurers Leader RDPE Group (2010-‘13) and is Chair of the Cambridgeshire Fens Leader group (2015-2020). He leads the Communications and Engagement work of Water Resources East (WRE). As well as his Higher Education, consultancy and business experience Martin was a Principal Examiner for ‘A’ Level applied business for AQA from 2000-’13 following previous work as an examiner for City and Guilds and Edexcel. From report 'Best Practices to Breakthrough Impacts', Harvard 2016 KCA (previously known as Kate Cairns Associates) was established in 2011 to bring together the work of Kate Cairns and a group of experienced practitioners and trainers across the UK. We are now registered as Knowledge Change Action Ltd, and as of October 2021 we have become an Employee Owned Trust. As an employee-owned organisation KCA aspires to be a beacon to those who want to lead sustainable organisations, rooted in their local communities, where employees are active decision makers shaping their future together. Our small, experienced team, managed from our Head Office in Gloucestershire, has an excellent track record in running effective training programmes, rooted in the science-based theory of attachment, trauma and resilience, that are responsive to the changing needs and priorities of our Commissioners. KCA office 98.8% of the 12,478 participants who completed KCA evaluation forms between March 2020 and March 2021 said that they would recommend the training to their colleagues At KCA, relationships are key to everything we do – whether that is the relationships between our colleagues that ensure that we feel supported, enthused and committed to our work, the relationships with our commissioners that allow us to understand and respond effectively to their needs, or supporting practitioners, through our training and consultancy, to develop effective connected relationships with the children, families and teams with whom they work.
