The local context (a small industrial town in rural northern Cumbria) is, perhaps, not one you might associate with academic excellence and yet we were the first secondary school in the county to have been judged “outstanding” by Ofsted under their revised framework. You will probably want to see for yourself what we have to offer and, to this end, I would be delighted to show you around. Emotional Intelligence – Plus (EQ+) I have always been a firm believer in the promotion of so-called ‘soft skills’, in Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and in improving the ability of pupils to interact effectively with others in different contexts. Many pupils suffer when they find themselves in a different social context (e.g. a discussion with an adult, a classroom presentation etc.) and find it hard to adapt. So, a few years ago, as part of the School Development Plan, we promoted this across the school through normal lessons and Form Periods to help pupils recognise its importance, and encouraged pupil progress in eight key areas, using where possible pupil role-models as teachers. These days, we regularly revisit EQ, albeit informally, encouraging pupils to be ‘EQ-competent’ and ‘interview ready’. And more recently, we have also embarked on a related project with an external company keen to promote Oracy Skills. Initially, we focussed on the whole of Year 8; latterly, we have adapted the programme to target around 100 pupils (from Year 7 to Year 12) who we believe might benefit more than others from this kind of intervention.

It caters for learners aged 13-16 that find traditional school settings problematic and find learning through vocational activities beneficial. Our most recent Ofsted report states Broadstones is a GOOD school, where learners “make good progress” and are “happy and feel safe in the school.” “Staff are quick to form excellent relationships and re-build pupils’ self-confidence and self-esteem” and “teachers design work to meet the personal needs and interests of each pupil. As a result, pupils engage in learning and make good gains in their progress and development.” The school’s “approach is re-building pupils’ broken understanding of how to be successful in society. Staff are skilful in nurturing and supporting pupils’ social and emotional needs.“ For the full report open the link in the Ofsted section at the top of this page. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum with both academic and vocational courses. Please see the curriculum section of the website for details. Being the best we can be.The students who join us have the potential to do great things. With inspirational teachers who go above and beyond, our students are supported and challenged to be the best they can be. Our students have respect for themselves, each other, their teachers and their school and leave us well prepared to face the world as confident, caring, independent and resilient young people. What is it like to start my own business or to sing in a theatre? I love science, I’d love to learn how to canoe and abseil? The answer to all these questions can be found at Richmond. Our students experience life at work, perform on stage and embark on local and international expeditions with teachers leading these events who share their interests and wish to develop them. On visiting, there’s an immediate sense that it is more than just a school, it’s a community within a community and students, visitors, parents and staff often comment on the special buzz they feel when they are here. It’s hard to pinpoint, but it’s a combination of many factors that unite to make this such a special place. Dedicated teachers, fabulous facilities, a wonderful heritage, a sense of belonging and incredible students, are just some of the elements that make Richmond School and Sixth Form College such a special place to learn. We were very proud to be awarded the 2021 School of the Year in the Northern Echo Education Awards, in recognition of the many brilliant facets of the school and the community it serves.
