The imagined space is a flaw in perception: we all know that our past and future reside in our present. There is an outmoded belief that our personal lives and professional lives are distinct from each other. Yet, we all remain at the centre of both. When we bridge these gaps, rattle our perceptions and challenge outmoded beliefs, new opportunities reveal themselves, often in surprising and exciting ways.

Expectations and aspirations are high here and we are committed to developing the young people in our care, whatever their talents. Children of all abilities succeed at this school and are encouraged to develop academically, physically and spiritually, fulfilling their potential in a happy, caring environment. When Ofsted last visited, it commented: “The all-pervading caring ethos ensures that pupils are happy and able to thrive from the moment they arrive at school. Pupils are very keen to share their pleasure of being at school and went out of their way to let inspectors know.” That is every bit as true today as it was then. Examination performance is very strong. At A level, students reach exceptional levels in a thriving Sixth Form of 350 students. Students routinely progress to Russell Group universities, including year-on-year to Oxford and Cambridge. In 2022, two students progressed to Oxford and Cambridge to read medicine, with a further moving to Oxford to study mathematics; in addition, one student is embarking on a degree in veterinary science. We are proud of the numbers of students who move on to university education, typically around 75% each year, and even more delighted in the variety of subjects that are chosen, following a rich A level experience here. Increasing numbers are also progressing to some prestigious higher-level apprenticeships, including one this year in software engineering with Lockheed Martin. At GCSE, students also perform well, both in value-added terms and in raw attainment. As a consequence, we have large numbers moving in to our Sixth Form, complemented every year with a number of students from other schools who choose to join us for their A level programme. Ofsted confirmed the strength in pastoral care alongside provision for purposeful learning by adding that we “have established a school that holds the academic success and emotional well-being of each pupil at its heart.” As a parent of four children myself, I am acutely aware of the increasing importance of education in today’s world and the role that we, as teachers, have to play in developing our children so that they are fully equipped to make positive contributions to society. The staff at Sheldon School are extremely committed and dedicated to ensure that this is the case and I am personally determined to see all children flourish here. A message from Sarah Bennett, IFtL CEO I know every CEO is proud of their Trust, their schools, the staff and the pupils within it…..and I am no exception. I know every CEO feels their Trust is unique, that their USP is different from every other; and they have a WOW factor that exceeds all. I am absolutely no exception to that either! I am personally so proud of the journey we have travelled and what we have achieved to date - created by people with a genuine desire: ‘To inspire the futures of us all through learning together’ We formed Inspiring Futures through Learning (IFtL) in 2016 as a natural extension of our school improvement journey. Indeed, for over twenty years our founding school, Two Mile Ash School had worked with very secure, high-quality partners in their ITT School-Based Partnership, supporting newly formed Trusts in turning schools in difficulty around and created our CPD programme to support the development of leadership and continual professional development both locally and nationally. There was a very strong track record of school improvement led by high performing leaders who shared a common vision. Developing a Multi-Academy Trust with like-minded schools and their leaders meant that our vision could circulate further, ensure the impact of our work reached out to more children and more staff benefited from high-quality development and learning from each other. Since 2016 we have achieved great success. We can quantify our success in Ofsted reports, performance data, financial spreadsheets and our recruitment and retention figures. However, most importantly to note is that we can only achieve such success because of our culture and ethos. It is our more qualitative success that makes IFtL truly unique. Dan was born in Cleveland Ohio and until the age of 24 grew up in rural eastern Ohio in “Amish Country”. At the age of 24, Dan took up ballet classes as part of his physical therapy for injuries sustained in a severe car accident. As a complete fluke, that led to him being accepted into a local prestigious performing arts college in the aptly named Painesville, Ohio a few years later. During his study for a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in fine performing arts, he danced for several small companies and had a one season premier dance gig for the Ohio Light Opera Company as well as a decent stage acting career, singing in musicals and light opera productions. That led him to an acting career which included 3 years, in residence and touring, with The Abbey Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, television and film spots and more stage acting in London. Due to a second almost identical car accident in England, Dan took up ultra-distance running, clocking up approx. 35,000 career miles while training for and carrying out events in many countries around the world to raise money for children’s charities and hunger issues. His charity vehicle for those events is responsible for raising roughly £2 million. His Karate career began as a gift to himself for his 50th birthday in 2008, as he decided to move away from ultra-distance running. Having seen and been inspired by his son at karate training at an after-school club, he decided that Karate was a physical pursuit that he strongly connected with; athletically, due to his long career in running, artistically, due to his previous involvement in ballet, and ideologically. This fresh start at a turning point in his life has now lead to him start his own dojo, and to commence teaching others, mainly children, the art of Karate-Do after 10 years of training. Despite this being a relatively short period, Dan believes that he can call on and incorporate his own experiences from previous endeavours, bringing in training ideas from the world of ultra-marathons, classical ballet and stage performance, to the way he teaches karate to those who train at his dojo. The dojo officially opened on August 8th 2018, to mark his 60th birthday. All are welcome and there are no excuses good enough for him for anyone to not take up karate as a healthful, exciting pursuit. Karate and Karate Do is for everyone. Gamabate (try your best)
