Amala (formerly known as Sky School) was conceived in 2017, in response to the gap in quality education provision for displaced youth. Our name is inspired by the Arabic word for hope, which our education embodies. We believe that young refugees - as all people - have a right to quality education. Yet, fewer than one in three refugees are able to complete their secondary education and only 6% are able to access higher education. In 2016, Amala co-founders Mia and Polly were working on a prestigious scholarship; the programme admitted refugees to schools around the world to complete their upper secondary education. They found that for every scholarship place available, hundreds of promising applicants were turned away. Their subsequent research showed that there were few educational opportunities available for refugee youth aged 16-25, many of whom are forced to drop out of educational systems due to the barriers they face. The idea for Amala was born: to provide transformational learning programmes for displaced youth and their host communities to improve their lives today and open up opportunities for the future. Amala has two key programmes: The Amala High School Diploma, the first high school diploma designed for and with refugee youth, and Changemaker Courses in areas such as Peace-building, Ethical Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship. Amala supports students to access further opportunities for education, training and work beyond their studies. Read more about our programmes here. Amala’s curriculum has been developed with the support of our educational partner UWC South East Asia, one of the largest international schools in the world with an expertise in values-based curriculum development, and led by UWCSEA’s former Director of Teaching and Learning Stuart MacAlpine, in collaboration with refugee youth and 150 educators. Amala learning focuses on the development of learner agency as well as competencies that enable learners to make change in their lives and communities. Amala learning is delivered through a blended learning model and in light of Covid-19 many courses have been adapted to an online model. Amala programmes are delivered both directly by Amala and in collaboration with partners whose missions are aligned to our own. Through collaborating with partners we have been able to bring transformational education to refugees in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Latin America. The Reality Based Training Association was initially formed in an effort to address issues specifically related to Reality Based Training safety. As the mission of Law Enforcement, the Military and various segments of the Emergency Services has evolved, training for these missions in many ways has not. In some instances the direction that has been taken by some organizations or individual trainers has been misguided, dangerous or deadly. Part of the mission of the RBTA is to examine training systems as well as overall system designs in an effort to move training in the most effective direction. The cost of ineffective training systems in terms of money and loss of life has been immense. Much of the discussion that led to the formation of this association was due to the number of serious injuries and senseless killings of military and law enforcement personnel during training exercises. In many instances of near tragedy, the trend has been to bury the incident and attempt to ensure it is not repeated. Sadly, this is exactly what NOT to do. Once such incidents are uncovered it is possible to understand the root cause of the system failure so that it can be repaired or replaced. Upon a more thorough examination of various tragedies, dangerous training trends and paradigms were discovered. In many cases, where certain training practices did not lead to the injury or death of training participants, such practices had the propensity to programme participants for future failure during dangerous encounters. Due to the deep entrenchment of many of these trends and philosophies inside the cultures where they were developed, it has been determined that the faulty architecture of many of these systems or the individual training philosophies of certain trainers is not easily changed. The RBTA was founded as a means to an ongoing investigation into how such systems CAN be changed so that personnel can be trained in the safest, most cost effective manner possible. To that end, the RBTA is an organization dedicated to the unification of the trainers and organizations tasked with supplying the soldier on the battlefield, emergency services worker or officer in the street with the most current information availble with regards to training philosophies, systems and products. Where systems, organizations or individual training practices are found to be defective or dangerous, the RBTA will direct its resources to the correction of those defects. Where defects are not correctable, it will inform its membership of the perceived dangers so that such systems can eventually be corrected, removed from service or avoided.

The Pembrokeshire WI is a very active and dynamic WI Federation with 51 WI groups and over 1100 members. Our WI groups span the whole of the county's geography - from Saundersfoot, in the South, to St Dogmaels, in the North and the Preseli Hills, to the East. Wherever you live, in Pembrokeshire, there will (without doubt!) be a WI that you can join, just down the road from you! Many of our members also like to join several Wis – it just makes 'getting to know new friends' even better and, of course, means getting involved in so many and varied activities! The Pembrokeshire Federation was formed in 1921 - therefore, in 2021 we will be celebrating our 100th Anniversary. At the moment, our Federation and all of our WIs are busy planning for 'our Big Year'! In addition, in 2021, we will be hosting the NFWI Wales Conference, in April, 2021. The meetings, across our county, are all so varied – we are so lucky to have so many different groups – those that meet in the daytime, those that meet in the evening. We also have a great variety of groups with a big mix of ages as well as some that are slightly younger versus those that are slightly older. Whoever you are and whatever you like to do, you can guarantee that you will find a WI that suits you! We own our own House in the county town of Haverfordwest (WI house) which is open to members on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and 3pm – all our members are welcome to pop in and have a catch up and chat with a Board Of Trustee member – between those hours there is always someone there to welcome you! We use this house for meetings as well as hiring it out for the local community to use for day schools, educational course and seminars. West of England Falconry (WoEF) was established in 2009 inspired by Director Jay Marshall’s lifelong interest in ornithology. WoEF is a registered charity dedicated to the well-being, education and conservation of birds of prey. “It was an experience similar to the ones we now offer the public which prompted me to learn more about falconry. After working with experienced falconers I started to develop a private collection and aviaries of my own. West of England Falconry started in 2009 and has subsequently been granted charitable status in 2013” says Jay. Experiences have always been well reviewed and continued to grow in popularity. WoEF received their first TripAdvisor certificate of excellence in 2015 and have done every year since and is now in the 'Hall of Fame'. In 2015 Naomi Johns met Jay and started working with him as a volunteer. Today Naomi now runs the centre alongside a brilliant team of staff and volunteers. WoEF’s work aims to benefit both wild and captive birds of prey through training and (very importantly) rescue and rehabilitation. Education, information and promoting and sustaining the art of falconry are also a high priority. Due to redevelopment proposals forcing relocation at short notice in early 2017, WoEF moved to Newton St Loe, where the local Duchy of Cornwall office supported us by providing larger premises. WoEF took full advantage of this opportunity and opened The Owlery in October 2017 with 15 more resident birds. WoEF received a Gold award for the Learning Experience of the year in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards in November 2017, and then went on to accept the Silver award for the whole of the South West. In April 2019, DEFRA granted WoEF a Zoo License, becoming Baths first Zoo, commending a high standard of animal care and commitment to charitable conservation and education activities. In November of 2019 West of England Falconry received a further four Bristol, Bath and Somerset tourism awards for the Small Visitor Attraction of the year, International Tourism, the Learning Experience of the year and for Accessibility and Inclusivity.
