It will deepen your understanding of working with clients experiencing eating difficulties and give you practical guidance on the most appropriate ways to support them, whether they have an official diagnosis or not. You will leave the workshop with a much better understanding of how to apply the skills and concepts encompassed in human givens therapy in this area. Jo Baker has a wealth of experience in this area; she has previously worked as a volunteer for BEAT and other local eating disorder charities and helped people with eating difficulties in both private practice and university settings. Why take this course The numbers of people experiencing eating difficulties are hitting an all time high – in the UK, 1.25 million people are estimated to have a diagnosable eating disorder¹ with hospital admissions more than doubling from 10,318 to 22,000 in the four years between 2016 and 2020². The early stages (or ‘subthreshold’ stages i.e. when symptoms do not meet full diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder as defined by the DSM-5 or the ICD-11) have been identified as a critical period for preventing progression of an eating disorder³. However, stigma directed towards those experiencing eating difficulties that aren’t believed to be ‘serious enough’ to warrant support⁴ can present a barrier to seeking help. With its deliberate use of non-clinical language Jo Baker’s new workshop for HG therapists considers all difficulties around eating worthy of help, understanding and support, irrespective of whether or not these difficulties have been diagnosed or meet the criteria for a diagnosable eating disorder. In this regard, the human givens approach takes a step forward towards early intervention, and treating the whole person. As well as having been a practising Human Givens therapist for 12 years, and teaching the HG Diploma, Jo has previously worked as a volunteer for BEAT and other local eating disorder charities and brings to the day a wealth of practical experience of working with eating difficulties both in private practice and in university settings. We’ve put together this 1 day bushcraft course for people whose time is precious but would like to gain a thorough grounding in the key skills of outdoor bushcraft and survival. So we’ve created a package that will ensure that you leave us with simple, repeatable skills that’ll give you the confidence to broaden your horizons in the great outdoors. During your time spent with us on this 1 day course, you will: - Learn how to safely use a knife - Build a debris shelter and gain an understanding of the design principles involved - Have plenty of practise creating a flame using matches, fire steels, fire pistons, wire wool & a battery, solar mirrors, flint & steel, chemicals - Make char cloth, create a tinder bundle and blow an ember into flame - Find, filter and purify your own water - Go for a woodland walk to gain an insight into some of the trees and plants around us and what they can be used for - Gather your own materials and light a fire following a method that will work in all weather conditions. At the end of the course you will have a good working knowledge of the skills needed to enjoy your time in the woods or enhance your camping or outdoor activities. Our term time classes allow students of all abilities the opportunity to design and create their own jewellery while learning new skills along the way. During the first session your tutor will settle you all in and get to grips with what each student is aiming to complete or learn during the term. Your tutor will discuss your different aims and goals, whether that’s really focusing upon learning and practicing a certain skill, or if it is to finish a specific project. Any new starters will be given a tour of the workshop and you will be introduced to some basic techniques during the first session, so you feel comfortable within the workshop. You can then discuss your ideas for the term and your tutor will help you with how and where to order materials from for your project, we have a substantial list of good suppliers and discount codes to get you started. Soon enough you will have a good understanding of the essential jewellery making skills which you can then go on to develop further, there are many areas of jewellery making to explore. Throughout your time with us, your tutor and peers will help you develop the skills and knowledge required to bring your designs to life. Each student will be working on their own projects, everybody has different directions and design ideas and techniques they want to work on. However during our terms we run demonstrations which are relevant to student projects to help them complete aspects of their project- other students are welcome to watch these too, we also run demonstrations requested by students, this might be a repeat of something a student would like a refresher on, or maybe a technique they would like to learn for their next project and we will also provide demonstrations to strive to introduce you to new skills. We also like to keep you up to date with industry news, show you designer inspiration to help you learn methods to process new ideas and gain an understanding of design processes behind jewellery making. We are very much here to support your development. The more terms you complete with us, the more time you have to develop a wide range of skills and a good understanding of the industry as a whole. Regular term time students are not given first refusal of spaces to allow a break in the year, and our schedule changes as summer holidays and children being off school affect tutor availability. Class size: We have 9 jeweller’s wooden workbenches in our workshop, however our term time classes always run with 6/7 students. 2 CATCH UPS are permitted over summer terms, meaning if you miss any classes due to holidays, you can catch these up on other sessions – it is not guaranteed we will have sessions available, however most sessions run with a space to accommodate a student on a catch up.
